Hello,
I would like to temporarily prevent the automatic installation of drivers on Windows 7.
How can I do that, please? Thank you in advance.
Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 3.6

    Hello,

It's a bit of a thread revival, but it might still be useful for those who come by looking for an answer ;-)

You need to open the "System Properties" window, for example by right-clicking on "Computer" and clicking on the link on the left "System Protection".

Once this window is open, select the "Hardware" tab and then click on "Device installation settings", and finally check the box "No, I prefer to choose manually".

This solution doesn't work often... Here is the fix:

"Press Windows Key + R (run), type gpedit.msc
In the window that appears, on the left side there is Computer Configuration, then expand:
Administrative Templates => System => Device Installation => Device Installation Restrictions

Then on the right side you will see "Prevent installation of devices that are not described by other policy settings"
Double-click on it and enable it.
Restart and Windows will no longer install drivers, it will be up to you to do it.

If that's still not the case, then enable all the other "Prevent installation of devices xxx" and restart

To restore everything as it was, do the same, select the "Prevent installation of devices xxx" but choose "Not Configured"
Normally they were all set to "Not Configured" before. Be sure to check before making changes!

Hi friends, jens1: it's a good solution but don't forget that after uninstalling a driver for the graphics card for example, you can't install another driver, it shows you an error.

Thank you for these tips, I would like to add new CD-ROM drivers
so that they can read CD-ROMs in HFS format (on Windows 7)

Where is the connection with what he is asking? He is not talking about Windows updates but about driver installation, and I'm sorry it's not the same! Have you resolved your issue because I'm experiencing the same thing!

I have a pretty simple solution that worked with my graphics card. Wait for it to install automatically, and then uninstall afterwards. Don't refresh with the manager; otherwise, it will search and reinstall!

    Good evening;

    1. To open Windows Update, click on the Start button, then All Programs, and then Windows Update.
    2. In the left pane, click on Change settings.
    3. Click on the desired option.
    4. Under Recommended updates, make sure the checkbox for Include recommended updates when downloading or installing updates, or receiving notifications about them is checked, then click OK.
