Windows XP SP3 Update (KB955759) Solved

Question

Hello,  Since the last updates of the month (January 2009), I consistently have one update that keeps coming back, KB955759. It installs correctly, no particular error message... but once installed, it reappears in the taskbar asking me to reinstall it over and over.  For your information, my version of Windows XP is not pirated and is validated with Microsoft, no issue there. I even downloaded this update directly from Microsoft (WindowsXP-KB955759-x86-FRA.exe) but even after installing it, it keeps coming back, and I must admit I'm a bit stumped...  If you have the solution or any leads to look into, I would be grateful, thank you in advance.  Wil

Reinstall --> Uninstall the update in add and remove if it is present, if not go to: C\windows, locate the file $NtUninstall KB955759 , inside, click on spuninst to uninstall it, then empty the download folder, install it manually and see how it goes. -- The human being is at its best when things are at their worst.

hello if that doesn't work ( proposal ekim55 ) switch to manual update instead of automatic.  or go to add and remove programs; and at the top of the page you can see (check the box) latest installed updates and remove the update. -- Who loves instruction! find the knowledge that comes from reflection!

So I followed the first method from ekim55, indeed when I try to launch the update, it tells me that the installation failed, which is normal (there are no more files in the /Download folder). But after a while, it starts downloading the update again into that folder, and then it tells me again to install it... which I do, everything goes well, no problem, but after about 30 seconds it starts again, asking me once more to reinstall this update...  As for the uninstallation, I had already tried that too, but it doesn't change anything; when I reinstall it, it still comes back all the time.  Thanks anyway to both of you for these suggestions.

Well, same result, I have:  - uninstalled the update, - emptied the /Download folder - rebooted - manually installed the update  but it keeps coming back... and the worst part is there’s no particular error message, everything installs correctly??  Well it’s true that I could disable the automatic update but I want to try other solutions first.  I’m going to grab a coffee, try to think a bit... I don't like to be stuck in front of a machine ;-)

Always the same, this time I did:  - stopped the automatic update service (changed the startup type to "Disabled") - uninstalled the update - emptied the /Download folder - manually installed the update - reboot  So far, so good, but now I have a normal Windows alert telling me that automatic updates are disabled. I then re-enable the service and bam, it starts again...  I really think it must be a problem related to the Windows automatic update service, but I don't know where to look, actually...  Thanks anyway for your suggestions.

Eureka!  After extensive research on various forums, I finally found what I was looking for. I found a small free utility called "Dial-a-fix" that fixed everything for me, which can be found here:  https://dial-a-fix.fr.softonic.com/  So in this software, after trying the "Fix Windows Update" unsuccessfully and the "Flush SoftwareDistribution" with no results, I found in the "Tools" section a "Reinstall Automatic Updates service" that did this for me:  "rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 C:\WINDOWS\inf\au.inf"  It then asked me to restart and upon returning, my automatic update problems were resolved. It is likely that you have Spybot Search & Destroy. At my place, it's the TeaTimer of the SSD resident that, as you can see below (excerpt from the SSD LOG), automatically denies it. We can see that at the initial update, the process is "allowed". Having probably failed (this update may have a bug), my Windows XP SP3 retries it periodically, but TeaTimer/SSD resident quietly rejects it (=without message) several times a day until today. Therefore, it is normal that, not being installed, W proposes this update continuously. In my opinion, it is necessary to manually allow KB955759 as an exception in SSD/TT. Be careful if this same name had been that of a real malicious process. I haven't tried it yet. Normally this file is already saved on your computer in C:\windows, (you can start the search with the hidden folders and system files option, open it and double-click, no risk). I checked my KB955759.log (installation log), in C:\windows, you can read yours too It reports a failure  "... failed to enable....error Ox2 .."  which I identified by manually restarting update.exe in C:\windows\KB955759\update\: the files update.ver and update.inf are not what was expected. It’s a bug in the patch, and renaming the two updatexx.inf files to update.inf doesn’t change anything. Since this update didn’t take place, KB.. restarts only once at each computer startup. see the last line:  74.078: RebootNecessary = 1,WizardInput = 1 , DontReboot = 1, ForceRestart = 0  For everyone it’s "silent", except for those with a dialog box to monitor the registry. Most people won’t notice, except for a longer boot time, and neither will Microsoft since this KB folder is on your computer so the site won’t offer it again. According to the inf and log of this KB, it also relates to time zones, particularly those of European overseas territories. On the other hand, I will reload the update that I found unnecessary, from 2009, there might not have been only that, and besides we’re only a few! who have found this bug.

So yes, I had already looked at this file on my side but I don't have the same parameters at all. For me, for example, I didn't need to reboot for this update.  Well, anyway, the fact of completely recreating the "download" folder for updates has, "for now", resolved my issue. It's not you who restarts, it's the computer that has the order at startup (1), (1) time good or not and then the order (1) to no longer do it, and whether it works or not to not ask for a restart (0). I checked on the other computers in the house that all the XP ones failed without saying anything in this update KB95575 - but it's written in its .log - everyone who has a netbook can verify it. I just don't know if all XP restart the missing file at every startup (it's not in the log file when it couldn't start, however it's recorded in the registry monitoring software, at least with Resident from Spybot). If your monitoring bothers you with this at every startup, "refuse and remember" or "disable" or even "kill" the process so that your computer doesn't wake it up anymore, or add it to exceptions (but don't uninstall it because that would also remove the possibly successful part of this update). Nothing serious, Windows works fine without updates, but less securely.

Yes, yes, I understood well when I said that I don't need a reboot, it's because my parameter in my log file is set to "0" and not to "1" like yours (RebootNecessary = 0). This thing is crazy!! Go to the services, check that the cryptography service is started and set to automatic and that the intelligent transfer service is stopped and set to manual. After that, go to: C\windows, rename SoftwareDistribution to --> SoftwareDistribution.old, then download --> http://forum.generation-nt.com/attachments/faq-logiciels/reinitialiser-reparer-windows-update-xp-47d1184320635-repupdat.zip, place it in your documents and unzip it. Double-click on the executable, it will take care of re-registering all the necessary files for the proper functioning of windows update, do not stop it. After that, restart and go back to windows update. -- Human beings are at their best when things are at their worst.

Hello ekim,  By the way, thanks for your help ;-)  So, here's what I had and what I did: - the cryptography service was running but in Manual, so I switched it to Auto, - the background intelligent transfer service was Started and in Manual, so I Stopped it, - I also stopped the auto update service (to be able to rename the SoftwareDistribution folder), - I then renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder, - I downloaded and executed the batch for re-registering the various files and then I restarted.  Now:  - the cryptography service is up and running and in auto, - the background intelligent transfer service is started and in Manual, - the auto update service is started and in auto,  On the positive side, I don't see any yellow exclamation marks on the horizon... but I'll be cautious this time ;-) I even shut down the PC to see if the behavior changed, apparently not, still no updates in sight. So I will wait at least 24/48 hours and keep you updated.  Thanks again for your insights ;-) Wil

Well, I tried but not with great success either.  I even did some cleanup with Glary Utility, if you know it, which is just as complete if not more than CCleaner. My computer started at 9 AM (yes, I know it's early for a Sunday on Valentine's Day) and there, nothing happened, I thought hallelujah but no, actually.

Hey no, not yet, I had a break the other day when the latest Windows updates (March 2010) came out: I no longer had the yellow bubble indicating that I had updates, but I still had it when I shut down my PC.

And now it has gone back to how it was before, I have my girlfriend the yellow bubble every day.

Apparently on some forums I have browsed in English, some think it is also a way to bring to light pirated versions of Windows XP. Personally, mine is genuine so I haven't found any other solutions for now.

Well, I decided to let it go; if someday someone has an explanation, I'm still interested.

For now, I unchecked the update and confirmed that I didn't want that particular update anymore; the others keep arriving normally, and everything is going very well.
