Normally this file is already saved on your computer in C:\windows, (you can start the search with the hidden folders and system files option, open it and double-click, no risk).
I checked my KB955759.log (installation log), in C:\windows, you can read yours too
It reports a failure

"... failed to enable....error Ox2 .."

which I identified by manually restarting update.exe in C:\windows\KB955759\update\:
the files update.ver and update.inf are not what was expected. It’s a bug in the patch, and renaming the two updatexx.inf files to update.inf doesn’t change anything.
Since this update didn’t take place, KB.. restarts only once at each computer startup.
see the last line:

74.078: RebootNecessary = 1,WizardInput = 1 , DontReboot = 1, ForceRestart = 0

For everyone it’s "silent", except for those with a dialog box to monitor the registry.
Most people won’t notice, except for a longer boot time, and neither will Microsoft since this KB folder is on your computer so the site won’t offer it again. According to the inf and log of this KB, it also relates to time zones, particularly those of European overseas territories.
On the other hand, I will reload the update that I found unnecessary, from 2009, there might not have been only that, and besides we’re only a few! who have found this bug.

So yes, I had already looked at this file on my side but I don't have the same parameters at all. For me, for example, I didn't need to reboot for this update.

Well, anyway, the fact of completely recreating the "download" folder for updates has, "for now", resolved my issue. I continue to monitor the phenomenon and I won't hesitate to reach out to you again if needed.

Thank you again for everything.

It's not you who restarts, it's the computer that has the order at startup (1), (1) time good or not and then the order (1) to no longer do it, and whether it works or not to not ask for a restart (0).
I checked on the other computers in the house that all the XP ones failed without saying anything in this update KB95575 - but it's written in its .log - everyone who has a netbook can verify it. I just don't know if all XP restart the missing file at every startup (it's not in the log file when it couldn't start, however it's recorded in the registry monitoring software, at least with Resident from Spybot).
If your monitoring bothers you with this at every startup, "refuse and remember" or "disable" or even "kill" the process so that your computer doesn't wake it up anymore, or add it to exceptions
(but don't uninstall it because that would also remove the possibly successful part of this update).
Nothing serious, Windows works fine without updates, but less securely.

Yes, yes, I understood well when I said that I don't need a reboot, it's because my parameter in my log file is set to "0" and not to "1" like yours (RebootNecessary = 0). Here’s what I have on my side:

"RebootNecessary = 0, WizardInput = 1, DontReboot = 1, ForceRestart = 0"

Anyway, I'm reopening (for the second time) this issue because this morning when I woke up, the update request came back once again. This thing is crazy!!

Here’s what I retrieved this morning from my "C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log"

"{11FFB1A0-B87B-46A8-8077-D45844305770} 2010-02-01 07:23:30:187+0100 1 148 101 {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} 0 8024a005 AutomaticUpdates Failure Software Synchronization Windows Update Client failed to detect with error 0x8024a005.

So it detected this morning that I had to install this update once again and only this one, and I admit I don't understand why??

Download this utility that will take care of re-registering all the files necessary for Windows Update to function properly --> http://www.thewindowsclub.com/downloads/Fix%20WU.zip, unzip it, then click on fix windows update, afterwards a window will pop up informing you that it was successful, then go back to Windows Update and see what happens.

It only works on Vista and W7 apparently, not for XP, it crashes on me.

Thanks anyway for your link.

Hello ekim,

By the way, thanks for your help ;-)

So, here's what I had and what I did:
- the cryptography service was running but in Manual, so I switched it to Auto,
- the background intelligent transfer service was Started and in Manual, so I Stopped it,
- I also stopped the auto update service (to be able to rename the SoftwareDistribution folder),
- I then renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder,
- I downloaded and executed the batch for re-registering the various files and then I restarted.

Now:

- the cryptography service is up and running and in auto,
- the background intelligent transfer service is started and in Manual,
- the auto update service is started and in auto,

On the positive side, I don't see any yellow exclamation marks on the horizon... but I'll be cautious this time ;-) I even shut down the PC to see if the behavior changed, apparently not, still no updates in sight. So I will wait at least 24/48 hours and keep you updated.

Thanks again for your insights ;-)

Normally, you need to stop your automatic Windows Update service if you know how to do it; otherwise, type this in the command prompt:

net stop wuauserv

it's stated above...

Well, after a few days, the update keeps coming back, nothing to do...

I’ve scoured forums, blogs, and other sites but to no avail; if you (Ekim) have any other leads, I’m all ears.

It's starting again! Go to this link --> http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?familyid=01AD786B-0187-4EC4-9DA9-E215365807EF&displaylang=en, check at the bottom of the page if these updates are installed, if not, install them, restart the PC and see what happens. Also, is SP3 installed?
1. Security update for Windows XP (KB972270)
2. Security update for Windows XP (KB973904)
3. Security update for Windows XP (KB974392)
4. Update for Windows XP (KB973687)
5. Update for Windows XP (KB976098)

Ok, I’ll take a look at that, but otherwise, yes, SP3 is installed (version title of the message).

So yes, they were already there but just to be sure, I downloaded and installed them again but unfortunately nothing has changed...

Same here! It makes us feel less alone! I'm following your discussions while searching on my side. I haven't found any answers, but it seems that many of us are in the same boat.

Go to: C\windows\software distribution\download, delete everything in download again, then uninstall the update KB955759, restart the PC, run CCleaner for a good cleanup in Windows, applications, and registry, go back to the Windows Update site, let the updates reinstall, then restart and see if the notification no longer appears in the systray.

Well, I tried but not with great success either.

I even did some cleanup with Glary Utility, if you know it, which is just as complete if not more than CCleaner. It especially has the advantage of being available in a portable version, which you can easily carry on a USB stick, convenient when you need to tidy up here and there... end of parenthesis ;-)

Return to: C\windows, delete the folders software distribution and software distribution.old, uninstall the update KB955759, restart and try again.

Always the same, sorry, this update keeps coming back...

Could a little Log Hijack help?? I've already looked at it without finding anything, but I'm open to any help...

I can’t see anymore --> Scan with MalwareBytes, after installation update it, then in search run a full scan and if positive, delete the detection.

(ex vinch)

Same thing, nothing changes!! Thanks ekim for all your efforts! It’s strange that a Windows patch has not been released because the problem is not isolated.

Well then, I launched MalwareBytes and here’s what I got:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.44
Database version: 3732
Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3
Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702

The infected files were on other disks not related to our issue, files we shouldn't really be using but they are quite handy when you want to run software, anyway...

I did the whole process again (stop service, delete folder, uninstall update, and finally reboot) then I went back to Windows Update for an update. Everything went well and for now (I’m going to slaughter a chicken, light a candle, knock on wood, etc.) it hasn’t come back.

I will therefore wait the standard 24/48 hours and keep you updated... thanks anyway for this little software.
