How to adjust contrast and brightness

Hello,
how do I adjust the contrast and brightness on a PSP version 6.20?
When I press the square button under the screen, it turns off but nothing changes.
When I charge the battery, the screen lights up a bit more, but it is still very limited for gaming.
My son just got his PSP for Christmas.

Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0

    Unfortunately, PSP screens are not very bright except in complete darkness.
    Normally, if you press quickly on the gray square, you can have 4 brightness levels with the charger and 3 without.
