Harman Kardon HS 200 sound issue

Hello,
I have an issue with my Harman Kardon HC; I connected it to the TV via HDMI for video and an optical cable for sound, but I only get the picture, no sound from either CDs or DVDs. Thank you in advance to everyone for your valuable help; I don't want a technician to come out.

The optical output of the amplifier on the TV cannot transmit sound to the TV since it is an output and not an input; therefore, the sound should come from the amplifier.

Normally, if you use HDMI, there shouldn't be a need to add another cable. However, you only get sound with HDMI on a TV if it is connected directly. If it goes through a home cinema system, the sound will stop at the amplifier. The only way to get sound on both the amplifier and the TV is to change a setting in the player that has an HDMI output and similarly adjust the amplifier to output sound to both the amplifier and the TV, rather than just the amplifier alone. However, this setting comes at a cost: you will no longer have multichannel sound but only stereo sound on both sides.

Thank you for your advice, but what exactly should I do at my level? Should I call a technician?

Take the supplied manual and make the adjustment.

Calling a technician will cost you a fortune just for 2 minutes to adjust!

      Great!

Sorry for not being more specific, but I know Hardman by name and I installed two models a few years ago, but it has probably changed, and above all, I can't remember where in the menus! On each AV receiver, it's supposed to be in the same place, but even within the same brand, for two different models, it's not always respected! I had this case when I renewed my AV system two years ago. Well, I'm good because I'm a bit used to it and above all, I read every manual even if I'm installing, so I know!

      I hope you're satisfied now.

However, I think of a small something that isn't too silly. The sound you wanted to have on the TV from the receiver, maybe you have a recording output, like a tape recorder output behind the receiver or something similar. You could have sound on the TV, but you would need to not go through HDMI, or you would have to use an adapter on the TV side to convert it to DVI or VGA for the image input, and for the sound, you would use a cable that has RCA audio on the receiver side and a 3.5mm jack on the TV side. You would have both image and sound. One downside, the receiver must be turned on.

Another possibility that might be more interesting: "normally," if you're using an audio + video connection on an audio/video receiver (so home theater), it's to have the sound syncing perfectly with the image and generally to have the best image. If, let’s say, you want to watch a good movie or a nice concert with great image and sound, for instance, use HDMI on the home theater. You would then have (unless you chose the amp + TV mode) perfect sound on the receiver and image on the TV. Okay? Now, here's my idea. Imagine, still with the same player, that you want to watch something that doesn't necessarily require the home theater or you just don't feel like it, we can use a technique, if the player (i.e., the source) has those options: we keep the HDMI for optimal sound + image during great movies/concerts. And for other movies without sound effects (like old black-and-white films and/or mono), use YUV for video and RCA audio for sound, going from the player to the TV. This way, the receiver isn't mandatory, you can watch and listen however you want, with or without the receiver. And with YUV, you also have up to 1080i (not 1080p, just 1080i; it doesn't go any higher. You won't see a huge difference, so it's fine). It does take up another input on the TV, but you'll get a decent image (not as perfect as HDMI) and quite acceptable sound.

      There you go.

Good luck and happy holidays too!

Hey Fred, you seem to know your stuff...

I have a Harman Kardon HS 350 and HKTS 11 for the speakers.

During the speaker setup with the Harman automatic program, the front speakers are not detected (including the center one). Meanwhile, the ones at the back (connected to a LG Wi-Fi device) are working fine.

I've checked all the speaker connections multiple times and they are correct.

I've been told that I need to "announce the presence" of the front speakers, but how do I do that? Through the amplifier? I couldn't find anything in the setup :(

Thanks in advance for your response. Otherwise, I'm going to throw it out the window!!!! Well, it won't fall from that high :P

        See you soon.

Well, as mentioned above, I mainly know Harman Kardon by name, so I'm not a pro on that. But generally, it's like any plug and play device. Disconnect the speakers that are not working, turn it on briefly (because an amp without speakers doesn't like that at all) so it can refresh and see that there are no speakers connected, for instance. A few seconds later (10-15 seconds max should be enough, but don't leave the amp on for more than 30-45 seconds without speakers, or it could be fatal for it), then turn it off. Wait a moment, reconnect the speakers that weren't recognized, and turn the amp back on. In principle, if everything is good, it should recognize them immediately without further intervention. Now, it may be necessary to proceed with a manual setup in the home cinema menus; if that's the case, do it. It will probably be in the audio, speaker, or amp section of the amplifier.

After that, I can't help you much more. You should check your manual, which, if it’s still the case with them, is super thick and comprehensive.

Thank you for your prompt response.

I have looked through the HK manual thoroughly, several times. But since the speakers can be set up automatically, there is no menu in the audio setup to do everything manually.

I will try your solution and get back to you soon.

        See you soon!
