Sound problem, instrumental music in video Solved

Question

Hello, I have a problem for the past two days. When I watch a movie or a clip, I can hear the sound (background noises or music), but I no longer have any dialogue! I've looked a bit on the internet and it seems that this corresponds to "Karaoke" mode. But I haven't changed anything, so how did it get turned on? And most importantly, how do I turn it off? I have an Asus P4R800-VM motherboard with SoundMax digital audio system, and I'm in a FOG!!! Help, I'm going crazy!!! This is the first time I've used a forum, and I hope I was precise enough and I thank in advance everyone who will help me!!!

Think to check something silly, that your speaker settings in the properties are in accordance with what you have. Like not set to "5.1" if you only have two speakers :)

Hi and thank you for trying to help me, the problem occurs regardless of the program used, I tried with Windows Media Player 11, I launched a clip with Real Player, same issue, no lyrics but I have the Windows startup sounds, however my Incredimail message notifier is inaudible... It's really weird.

Yes, my sound card is fine, it happens to me with avi files but I just tried a commercial DVD with media player and it's the same problem, I have the music, the background noises but no dialogue! It's a crazy story. And I'm sure my DVD works, I tested it on my home player.

Well, I think it's a codec problem. Moreover, WMP11 is a piece of junk. I downloaded VLC and tried it out, but it doesn't change anything; I still don't have the lyrics. I have all the other sounds (music, background noises, etc.) but not the lyrics. If it were a codec issue, why just the lyrics? Especially since I don't recall installing anything in the last few days, and everything was working fine until now! However, I have a movie that works, but it's not French, it's Quebecois. I don't know the difference, but with it, I have the lyrics! I checked the mp3 files, and I have the music (not top quality) but no lyrics, so it's not just with the videos... It's becoming concerning. Similarly, I converted a DVD to DivX so I could play it on my home player, and the converted movie works very well; I have good sound and the lyrics. I don't know what to do anymore... I even checked my hard drive with the antivirus and anti-spyware, but nothing... Everything seems normal... But it still doesn't work!!!
For now, I have to go (I have to make a living), but I'll be back during the day. Thank you.

Uh, that story of yours is weird!!!
I don't know any software that removes the lyrics, even on mp3s.
Are you sure your movie even has lyrics?

With VLC, we bypass the codec issue since they're integrated.

You say I checked the mp3 files, I have the music (not in top quality) but no lyrics, so it doesn't only happen with videos...

It's getting worse...

I think your original files have a problem, especially if you got them from Emule.

That's why I asked you to test with original CDs and DVDs.

I agree, it's very weird, but this is what's happening even with commercial DVDs and CDs, I have the same issue, not with the lyrics, I'm trying to understand, I reinstalled SoundMax, I went to download codecs, I'm searching and for now I can't find anything. The only thing I found is that some ASUS motherboards (which is my case) have a karaoke feature that lowers the vocal sound and lets the music and background noise through...
I went to the ASUS site, I can't find anything, but as soon as it's in English I have a problem, so I'm quickly limited in my research, but I keep going and I hope I will find something. That's the latest news, I'm still looking!!!

I'm actually looking for that, but I can't find anything. The volume control apparently doesn't have a function to lower the sound of a channel; everything is turned up, but I just realized that the sound is actually lowered a bit for the music and almost fully up for the vocals. I've seen that some programs can do this, but I didn't quite understand how it works, and in any case, I haven't installed anything these last few days... I'm losing my mind!!!

HERE WE GO!!! I found it! In fact, it's quite simple: my dog had gone behind the desk the day before yesterday (I just remembered) and he slightly moved the speakers' plug, so the plug was there but not fully inserted... That's what was causing the issue; what's surprising is that I still had some sound, which is why I didn't think of it right away since my sound card was working partially. So to sum up, a poorly inserted plug can lead to the problem I had: music without vocals....
So one piece of advice, WATCH YOUR DOG!!!!
I still thank you for your help because I was starting to get really depressed...

I have exactly the same problem... with one exception: the plug is correctly connected. The music works very well whether it's from mp3s, DVDs or even games. The issue is, the voices are present, but with a quality that is more than mediocre and at a very low volume. I've tried different speakers, headphones, and other devices, but nothing works!
In short, it's more than a mystery.

I recently bought a new HP laptop with Vista.
No special issues. But afterwards, I downloaded a movie, and after it downloaded, I tried to play it but had sound but no video, so I searched a bit on the internet why and they told me to download a codec for Vista. I downloaded several things without any results, and since then, since I downloaded these things, I have the image but no sound.
I tried to play a purchased DVD on it and had the same problem: I have the image but no sound. The music starts playing, but there's no sound. On MSN, there's no sound either; however, at the startup of Windows, I have sound, and I have a touch-sensitive keyboard for sound, and when I press + or -, it beeps, so sound is coming through.

The Windows sounds are working, so the speakers are properly connected... You just need to install the audio codecs that allow the computer to play sounds from videos, music... in different formats.
