Hello,
I’m new to the forum and I’m contacting you because I’m currently in trouble: I can’t burn DVD-RWs at all anymore. I’m using Windows XP, but I can still burn CD-Rs. Every time I insert a DVD-RW, either my drive says there is no disc to insert, or the burning doesn’t complete and it reports an error. I don’t understand at all because everything was working fine before.
PS: I should tell you that I’m not a computer expert.
Thanks for your help
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 7.0

Hello,
You have Internet Explorer 7, you should already update your PC?
Also check the other programs: Adobe Reader, Flash Player, Java, your antivirus.

Any obsolete program can cause problems, especially browsers that have frequent vulnerabilities, as well as Java and Adobe Flash Player. So you’ve kept Internet Explorer updated; that’s important, we’re on version 8 since March already! To manage updates, you have a very handy software, Secunia PSI, here https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/securite/19879-secunia-personal-software-inspector/
This will allow you to perform updates very easily.
Then for your burning issue, it can have various causes; your drive may simply not support this type of DVD-RW, it happens. In that case you should try with another brand (or another type) of DVD.
What software do you burn with?

But I’m going to explain to you and it’s clearly stated in the description when you download Secunia, it’s important to update the programs on a PC and especially the browsers which have significant vulnerabilities, just like Java and Adobe Flash Player. Updating a PC is the first priority!
For Java and Adobe Flash Player, don’t forget to uninstall the old versions first.
Then, you have SONIC + Nero on your PC, that could cause a conflict. Which of the two software is a purchased version?

no I only have sonic installed on my PC
I had just tried nero but since it didn’t work I uninstalled it
on the other hand I can’t update java it tells me impossible to decompress the core files -
Are you sure you uninstalled Nero correctly?
To uninstall Nero:
https://support.nero.com/en/support/home#n12pla::Support%20Tools:#tab4
For Java, I found this message from Eric, this solution should work:
The problem is super simple, during the installation (of Java) you “check” at the bottom left 'set a new location' otherwise the CORE files will be decompressed into their own folder (impossible because already present) you must have a JR6 file, inside it you add create a new folder or file as you wish, you rename it or not, it will be named by default "new folder" you click OK and you launch or relaunch your installation, and there you go, the installation is perfectly accomplished, continue on the Java verification page, and you will see “Java has been successfully installed” phew
Tell me how it goes.

A big thank you for Java, the update is done When I run the test with Securia everything is up to date I performed a complete uninstall of Nero but regarding DVD-RW burning it still doesn’t work the thing I don’t understand is when I insert a DVD I right-click Properties the graph tells me the disk is fully used but the octets show 0 bytes weird ??

Download CDBurnerXP and try burning with this software to see: CdBurnerXP
You choose "Data Disc" = Data disc, unless it’s an image, you set to a low speed.
Don’t forget to finalize the disc.

So that comes from support. DVD-RWs are generally less compatible. You can still try with another brand or another type of DVDRW. But apparently it works correctly with the other DVD-R media, so you should stick to that type of media, unless you change the burner. Note that on the players, DVD-RWs (and even more so +RW) are not always accepted either.

Generally when you install something you remember it!
Maybe do a scan in safe mode with Maéwarebytes here:
https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/securite/14361-malwarebytes-anti-malware/
click on "update" then on "scan" and wait for the scan to finish. It will delete any infected files.
