Hello,
I have an email address with Alice which will no longer be accepted at the end of this month. It is an address in @libertysurf, created before libertysurf was bought by Alice, and now Alice has been acquired by Free
(This is not the only downside I've experienced since Alice was bought by Free!)
I recently created an account on Gmail, and I'm trying to ensure that emails sent to my Alice address (which were arriving in Thunderbird) now arrive on Gmail (hoping to transfer them back to Thunderbird later, as before, via Gmail).
There is a help page on Gmail:
https://support.google.com/mail/answer/21289?visit_id=637166072707258119-3111552697&rd=1
Message recovery tool
Click on Settings at the top of a mail page.
Click on Accounts.
In the section Retrieve messages from other accounts, click on Add another email account.
But when I go to Settings, then to Accounts, I can't find that section: Retrieve messages from other accounts.
What should I do?

Hello;
As a very old Libertysurf subscriber, I have always kept my free @libertysurf emails and then created others @tiscali.
The problem is that since yesterday, November 19th, I can no longer access them either through the webmail page or through Mail (Mac's Outlook)... It tells me that my username/password is incorrect... What should I do? Where is the Zimbra page to make changes????
This is very important, all my professional contacts are on my @Aliceadsl.fr address :(

Hello,
So the exact procedure is:
Settings --> Accounts and import (2nd tab) --> Check mail using POP3 (3rd section) --> Add a POP3 email account
On another note, I also have an address with libertysurf (but I wasn't aware of this cancellation), could you tell me where you got the information from, please?

Hello Zpoupette
Regarding the LibertySurf address, I received a message this morning from Alice: Migration of Alice's email platform
"In view of the standardization of email hosting platforms, we are preparing to migrate the domain libertysurf.fr to Free's infrastructure.
Unfortunately, we regret to inform you that your email box ....@libertysurf.fr cannot be migrated. Indeed, the name of this email box is not supported by our platform (address too long, unsupported characters, etc.) and we will only be able to ensure its proper functioning until November 1, 2009."
For the operation you mentioned, under settings, I only have Account, not Account and Import. In fact, I had a moment with "Account and Import" and managed to perform the operation, but I can no longer find the "Account and Import" tab (when I had "Account and Import," my Gmail homepage was in English ("setting" instead of "paramètres"), but I can't seem to get back there.
So I think what I did should work, but if I had to redo it or modify something, I don’t know how to achieve that.

For Gmail, indeed, I use the English version but I switched back to French to see if the section was different from one version to another, but they are identical.
The only thing that makes a difference is the use of the standard interface or the simplified HTML version (which does not contain the option you are looking for).

Hello, 10 years at Libertysur. I haven't received any warning message. However, I haven't changed any settings, and there have been no modifications. Like many... issues (I use MS Outlook). I was able to access the emails on the server since yesterday; I accepted the migration of one of my addresses and it worked (except for the address book and archives). This morning, it was the same for the other addresses... It's a pity that we can't compare (to accept or not ZIMBRA). Good luck.
For your information, Alice is not supported by the redirection on GMail. See the excerpt below:

If you previously used services from another email provider, importing your contacts and messages from your old account to Gmail can help you make the transition with minimal hassle.
To get started, follow these steps. Before you begin this process, remember that you will need access to the email account in question:
1. Click on the Settings link.
2. In the Accounts and Import tab, click on the Import mail and contacts button.
3. In the window that appears, enter the email address of the account from which you want to import contacts. Click Continue.
4. Enter the password for your other email account, then click Continue.
5. Check all applicable boxes:
* If you choose to import contacts, the information from your old account will be imported into the Contacts area of Gmail.
* If you check the Import email box, the messages from that account will be imported into your Gmail inbox.
* You can also check the box Import new messages for the next 30 days so that messages sent to your old account over the next 30 days will be imported to your Gmail account. These messages will not appear in Gmail as soon as they are sent to your other account, but generally one to two days later.
* Finally, you can apply an automatic label to the imported messages to identify those that were sent to your other account.
6. Click Start Import. The import will continue even if you leave the Settings page or log out of Gmail.
7. Your contacts and/or messages are imported. It may take between 24 and 48 hours for the imported messages to become visible. Therefore, you should not worry if they do not display when you click OK. You can check the import progress by clicking on the Accounts and Import tab on the Settings page. At the end of the import, a confirmation message will appear at the top of the inbox.

Hello trezaqwx,
Your information is very interesting because I myself have an Alice ISP subscription and since yesterday I can no longer access my ALICE emails by any means (Mail Washer Pro, Thunderbird, and the Alice Mail interface via Firefox). It seems that the information provided by Alice/Free on their own support site, which I copied in my previous post, is not up to date (which doesn't surprise me).
However, if I can't access my emails either due to no response from the POP server or pseudo-identification issues, I doubt that a forwarding to my Gmail account will work. I’m going to have to deal with 10 33, fortunately free of charge.
Supplementary note: if a neighbor hacks my WIFI connection to download illegally, I won't receive the HADOPI warning email!!!

Since Monday, I've been experiencing the same blockage in accessing my email (address libertysurf.fr). I left a message in the Assistance section of the Alice website, not expecting much. Is this doomed to fail? I’m discovering through this forum that we are many "victims"... If anyone has more information on the resolution timeline or even a solution (I dare to hope!), please let me know! Oh man, what stress!!
Hi tressgirl,
My actual personal address has been on GMail for several years. I check my emails with Thunderbird at the same time as my other addresses. It's preconfigured for that. It works well and I'm very happy with it. I've mainly tried to have an address independent of my ISP so I can change it without any issues on that side. I hardly ever go on the GMail site.

tressgirl,
- On the gmail site, don't forget to check the box that activates the POP server
- In Thunderbird, make sure that port 995 is being used instead of the usual port 110. Normally, Thunderbird does this automatically if you select gmail when creating a new email address, but it's still better to check. A separate group will be automatically created and gmail emails will be fetched at each launch of the software and then every 10 minutes. Nothing else special. After that, it's like any other email address.
Thunderbird has a very effective spam filtering system with learning capabilities that has proven itself.
Last indication: to backup all your emails, addresses, contacts, configuration, add-ons, etc., make a backup of the folder C:\Users\your profile name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird (in VISTA). For Firefox, do the same thing by replacing thunderbird with mozilla.
bye

Hello
Alice are donkeys, at least when it comes to technical support for clients
I had a Tiscali email (plus 3 additional addresses) that I migrated to aliceadsl.fr a long time ago
Since then, I have created a 3rd and a 4th additional address
On October 20th, I received the following message regarding the 3rd address:
"We are preparing to migrate your email address to new
technical infrastructures. Unfortunately, this operation will result in the deletion of any
forwarding you may have set up on your email account.
Of course, you will still be able to check your messages from the
aliceadsl.fr portal. If you use an email client, you can now
configure the downloading of messages from the POP server."
Since Sunday noon, all my addresses have become frozen (unable to retrieve messages via the email client); naturally, I didn't change any settings since I was already on the aliceadsl POP server.
My main address came back on Monday
Accessing the other addresses is impossible via www.aliceadsl.fr/webmail; when logging into my main account, I noticed that none of my secondary addresses were showing anymore!
Yet, it is impossible to recreate them (they still exist) and a test of sending from one address to another last night worked
Personally, I believe I will wait a few days for it to sort itself out, my experience has convinced me that the 1033 is only there for show

You are not the only ones struggling with Alice for the past two days. After 20 minutes of waiting on Monday evening, I managed to reach someone at Alice who informed me of a reconfiguration in progress. I also reported the loss of all my contacts: I was told to wait and monitor the return of the contacts. But I fear the worst... It's impossible to redirect my emails to Gmail (POP issue?). The ending of my email address is .libertysurf.fr and I haven't received any message stating that I can no longer use it...
Hello, I am on libertysurf / tiscali / alice and Free now I've always found advantages, it's a shame that this server (like all of them actually) doesn't warn us about the issues we might have when modifications are underway. That said, I won't change because friends have much bigger problems with their servers. Yes! Some information would be welcome.
Contrary to what you say, everyone who has an address managed by Alice received an email stating that certain address domains were going to disappear and that others were going to be migrated to Free's installations. Technical issues were to be expected. Some did not notice it, others did. These are the uncertainties of technology. It’s not perfect and it never will be.
Hello,
Well, here's my problem: it is impossible for me to delete my emails and when it is possible, I go back to square one typing my name Alice... and my password, uh, Alice is starting to drive me crazy.

Hi Jac,
I confirm what you said. Everything is back to normal in my Thunderbird. My two addresses are working as before after the changes.
If they had sent us a little mass email indicating this procedure, it wouldn't have freaked them out, their image would have been less tarnished, and we would have been less annoyed. Oh that Alice, how can you not become misogynistic?

I wasn't informed about this migration either. I have a libertysurf address and an aliceadsl address. Can you confirm that I can cross off my libertysurf address at the end of November? (currently, it's with difficulty that I can occasionally check my email through the web interface)
Will the aliceadsl address remain or do I need to change the domain (regardless of any controversy regarding the longevity of the liberty/tiscali/alice/... addresses)? There's not much time left to notify my contacts about this change...
Thanks to Jac for the info on transforming the % into @. I haven't tested it yet, but if it works, that's already very good news if the aliceadsl email address remains valid.

Like you: primary address "libertysurf.fr" and secondary "aliceadsl.fr", logically the primary should not change! Indeed, at the server, the messaging requires some improvements in its use, however, through Outlook for example, there are no issues... I have never received any emails from Alice regarding these migrations!!
Before any modification (% -> @), I see that in my Thunderbird configuration, it is indeed the case for my aliceadsl email (mail@aliceadsl.fr), however for my libertysurf email, I have an exotic name: "Username" contains a name like "nomspecial_lsurf". Apparently, it's doomed to fail to download emails via POP on Thunderbird for this address, or does anyone have an idea?
Hello,
The problems are due to the migration of Alice's mail servers to those of FREE.
Indeed, there are 2 different issues:
1. the obligation to change addresses which only affects people with addresses containing a hyphen (-), special characters, or even old domains (such as libertysurf for example), or even "too long" names (!?).
2. disruptions in the email service that affect everyone (or almost everyone).
For the first problem (1.):
. the people concerned received around October 20, 2009, a message informing them of the unavailability of these addresses (thus the obligation to create new ones) starting from November 1, due to the migration of Alice's servers to Free;
. people needing to create a replacement address could do so under Alice with an "acceptable" address (!?) or with a free email service (Gmail, Yahoo, or Caramail, ..);
. people with "acceptable" addresses (!?) were not informed of this migration.
For the second problem (2.):
. it seems that no one was notified;
. these malfunctions occur on Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista, Linux Ubuntu, and MAC OS X (thus independently of hardware, systems, and email software);
. the disruptions can vary each time:
- inability to access any email address from an email client (Thunderbird, webmail, or Gmail): "<i>The connection is refused. It is likely that your username or password has been entered incorrectly</i>";
- via the Alice site, possibility to access the main email (that of the account completed by the domain name);
- still via the Alice site, after more than 5 minutes, accessing a secondary address with an inability to navigate or perform operations (returning to the login window or to a blank window for example), but it can also happen that access is not possible.
. using a specialized free email client (Thunderbird or others), will not eliminate the disruptions and will only give you access to your addresses when these issues are resolved;
. using a free email service (Gmail, Yahoo, Caramail, ..) allows you to have an address independent of your ISP, thus with its own advantages and disadvantages, but will not allow you to retrieve your messages from the old addresses until the issues are resolved and with a transfer or a specific recovery function if necessary;
. the hotline confirms these issues until the end of next week.

1- For the email address validity issue, I haven't received any warnings. I have an email with libertysurf. It still works fine, is it long-lasting or will it disappear at the end of November?
2- As for the web interface for checking emails, the problems seem to be resolved for me since about last night.
I had another problem which was downloading my emails via my Thunderbird messenger. I found the solutions in another post:
- for a libertysurf address: the username was of the type xxxx_lsurf. It now needs to be replaced with adressemail@libertysur.fr and it works (until when... see 1-)
- for an aliceadsl address: the username was previously adressemail%aliceadl.fr. It now needs to replace the % with @ and thus indicate: adressemail@aliceadsl.fr (already provided by jac above)

Hello
I also received an email from Alice on October 21, but it only mentioned removing redirects:
Hello,
We are preparing to migrate your email address to new
technical infrastructures.
This operation will unfortunately result in the removal of the
redirects you may have set up on your email box

Of course, you will still be able to check your messages from the
portal aliceadsl.fr.
If you are using an email client, you can now
set up downloading messages from the POP server.
We apologize in advance for the inconvenience caused,
Thank you for your loyalty,

On my side, I have 2 addresses @libertysurf.fr (for 10 years!!!), and I haven’t received any warning messages.
I had to change the username in Outlook last week, but everything was working normally.
However, last night I checked one of the 2 addresses via webmail, I was offered to migrate to Zimbra, I said yes.... and then, there was disaster, no more access for sending/receiving from Outlook, unable to connect via webmail, and worse: an error message saying that the address does not exist when someone writes to this address!!!
The other address not migrated to Zimbra still works...
Should I conclude that my first address, migrated to Zimbra, no longer exists, or should I wait a few days?

Hello, in the same situation for several days: I haven't changed any of my settings and address (liberty or Alice) everything was fine this morning after accepting the migration to "Zimbra" (3 email addresses) and an hour later I noticed that the address book of my primary email address was present as well as my archives.. I think that nothing should have been touched.... just wait...
I am no longer receiving messages at @libertysurf.fr since today!
I was told that the address would no longer work starting November 1st. So far, it was still functioning.
I also thought that by redirecting the emails from this address to Gmail, my address would continue to exist, but apparently not.
So if Alice (or Free) decides to delete an address, is there no way to keep it by making it independent of Alice?

My email address at @libertysurf.fr has just come back from the void!
I was told it should disappear on November 1st. It survived until November 19th. On the 19th it seemed to have disappeared for good. But no! On November 25th it reappeared!!
But from the 19th to the 25th, my address was indicated as nonexistent, and the messages sent to me were returned to the sender!!
This is nonsense!
Brief message from Alice:
Hello,
Your email address has now been migrated to our Zimbra platform.
You can now log in via the following address: https://zimbra.aliceadsl.fr/
The Alice team
What is Zimbra?
Alice doesn't say!

Hello, it should be noted that the so-called "primary" email address never changes.. Having multiple email addresses, I tested: without Zimbra you are on "inbox" (petrol blue background) your address book follows as long as you check the request! As for "Zimbra," once migrated (the address book does not follow), however, there is a calendar! In my case: on https://zimbra.aliceadsl.fr/ I have my messaging on "Zimbra" and what’s surprising is that on https://webmail.aliceadsl.fr// I have "inbox" (petrol blue background) ?? So I added to favorites (https://zimbra.aliceadsl.fr/) and I can go from one to the other and discover the pros and cons.
I tried again, my credentials are being rejected by both sites which actually have the same homepage.
The hotline is passing me from call to call and nothing is moving, they told me yesterday to wait until Friday after saying on Saturday to wait until Monday...
Assuming it works again (?) Friday will mark almost 3 weeks without emails and without information from the ISP, no mail, no info banner on the homepage of the site, NOTHING, NOTHING, it's despairing!
I find it surprising that there is no reaction from consumer associations. Shouldn't they be informed?

Same problem for me, no incoming emails for a week. I called 4 times and each time it's the same refrain, we have to wait. The last call on Monday promised me that everything would be back to normal tomorrow (Friday) but they had already told me that for last Monday, so I don’t believe it. I requested a commercial gesture which was refused. If I need to contact a consumer association, I’ll join you! Fed up with being taken hostage and having no information on the site; the least they could have done is inform us via the site or SMS.
Angry!!
Angry!!
Yes, I think that without outside intervention we can be kept waiting for a long time because, today being Friday, the service was supposed to be functioning again and it still isn't.
I also called the General Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs
and Fraud Control: phone number 3939 (available until 7 PM) which gave me the contact details of the people to reach out to for intervention in this matter.
So I have the phone numbers and addresses, I will call them on Monday.
Out of curiosity, I also called 1033, the current message is "we need to regenerate your password because it only has 5 characters, we will send it to you later."
However, I changed it to 7 characters as soon as Alice asked me to. The hotline cannot provide me with either the timeline or the method of transmission for this regenerated password to come!!!
I informed them that I contacted the General Directorate............... and that I will be sending them a registered letter demanding the execution of the service that is being charged to me monthly.
I invite you to do the same.
Very, very angry...

So to put it simply
The pop.aliceadsl.fr is working again
The login and password for the @libertysurf address on the alice webmail do not work and will not work again,
I did not request the migration to Zimbra, I will wait for things to calm down and for the migration to be finished for everyone.
I found all my account in libertysurf ....at FREE!!! Yes!
http://imp.free.fr/horde/imp/mailbox.php
my login is still something like truc.machin@libertysurf.fr and the password is the usual one.
I found a message from the mailer-daemon with a crazy date in 2028 explaining what happened.
There you go, the data is not lost because even the contents of the trash are still there.
I can no longer make automatic forwarding, but I was warned a month ago that it would no longer exist.
Read the rest. Try it and let it be known, to stop stressing.

Hello,
Your mailbox had an automatic forwarding or response.
These have been removed.
Also, your email box has been temporarily disabled.
No request is necessary to reactivate your mailbox: simply
reading this message indicates that the box is usable again.
Mailer-Daemon
And all this without any prior warning (I just received an email in October explaining that the forwarding would be removed), without being able to check the messages that my contacts have tried to send me for the past 2 weeks.
It’s really a nightmare with this crappy service.
Don’t come and praise the merits of Free when they have a cardboard infrastructure and the identifier can't exceed 20 characters.
It feels like we're in 1980; it's such a stupid limitation.
My libertysurf address worked, I wasn’t asking anything from anyone, especially not a forced migration due to a takeover that’s ruining my business. Ugh, I'm so pissed off.
