Hello,
My PC crashed several times last week (especially when coming out of sleep mode). It didn't want to respond at all, so I had to force it to shut down by pressing the power button for 5 seconds.
After the third crash, when my PC restarted, it displayed a message about data recovery, "I can't remember exactly" and I think I ignored this message thinking that if it was really important, it would show up again on the next startup (which is not the case).
Since then, I can no longer use my shortcuts; neither on my desktop nor in my start menu. When I click on one of my shortcuts, the following message appears:
"Windows cannot open this file:
****.lnk
In order to open this file, Windows must know the program used to create it. Windows can perform an automatic online search, or you can choose a program from the list of programs installed on your computer.
What would you like to do? ..."
I am working on Windows XP SP2
Does anyone know which program Windows shortcuts are associated with?
Or how can I restore my operating system?
Thank you in advance for your help.

I found the solution in another post:
Run "Regedit" and in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Fi leExts\.lnk", delete the "UserChoice" folder and then restart the session.
To launch regedit, you will first need to type "cmd" in the start menu search box (under Vista and Seven).
At your service.

regedit does not open and I have another problem: all my exe files open with firefox please give me solutions for these two problems.
Hello,
On my Windows 7 Ultimate, the solution from "pekworld" worked very well.
The command "gpupdate" was enough to apply the registry change.
Restarting the session is therefore not necessary.

I had this problem too with XP. I wanted to follow the advice I read, which is to do a system restore. The problem is that the restore also asked for a program. I found it in windows/system32. To find it, you right-click on the exe files present and select properties. Once you've found the right one, "System Restore" is written on it. You click on it, then OK, the restore panel appears, and all you have to do is that, and everything is back to normal.
To summarize, you try to do the restore, a panel appears asking which program to associate. Click browse, c:/windows/system32, and then follow the rest.......

OHHH thank you so much, savior! The solution is very well explained and works perfectly, thank you!!!
Hello,
a shortcut points to the executable of the said program.
I cannot explain without seeing why the shortcuts no longer work.
To restore the links, there are 2 methods:
1. right-click on the shortcut icon>Properties. In the Shortcut tab, check the Target field where there should be a path like
"C:\Program Files\[program].exe"
Just restore the correct path.
2. simpler perhaps, recreate a shortcut from each executable you want on the desktop*.
Right-click on the executable>Create a shortcut and drag it to the desktop.
*avoid multiplying shortcuts on the desktop as much as possible: Windows XP struggles to manage more than twenty without issues.
See you later

Hi, thanks for your reply, but my problem is not with the target of the shortcut, but rather with the program choice that allows executing the .lnk file (shortcut extension regardless of the target).
I would like to include a screenshot, but I don't know where to host it.
Thank you in advance
