don't you simply have a keyboard problem?
check if the keys that aren't working have a logical placement (usually in a line like rfv or edc or tgb, ...)
if so, then it's a keyboard problem...it needs to be replaced
i had this problem...when my laptop was getting a bit too hot...the keyboard started acting up.
i could make the letters reappear by pressing (more or less hard on the edge of the keyboard, between the keyboard and the numeric pad...)

Hello,
When it "unlocks", what happens if you press A:
- nothing
- another letter than A is taken into account?
Otherwise, which Windows are you using?

OK.
I don't think it's a virus, but you can try an online scan (Secuser, Panda, F-Secure offer one for example, and surely others too)
I'd lean more towards a hardware issue: you should check with HP if the beast is still under warranty
See you later

Thank you for the quick responses. What’s happening is that none of the keys corresponding to the vowels are working; sometimes they work for 5 minutes when I reboot it, and then it’s back to nothing again. The other consonant keys are working... my computer is an HP Pavilion laptop. Is it a virus?
Hello everyone, to find out if it's due to a virus, post a Hijack in the Virus/Security forum. The real pros will respond to you very quickly, but change the title to something like (Am I infected) have a good day.
