Illegible characters on thunderbi email

Hello,
Why do accents cause unreadable characters in some emails I have been receiving for months?
And what can be done to fix this issue? Thank you 
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 3.5.3

      super, thank you so much! mamija76 but I realize that it starts again with each email, I can't do this every time! how do I keep this universal code???
