A power supply that smokes and makes noise, if I say it's dead (and dangerous), I'm spot on?

I'm the one who set up the computer, and I'm worried that it might be a bad connection.

No, I don't think so... :/ well check it out, but when it smokes and it's worth 35 euros, well... that says it all.

I have a second one and I'm going to try with it, it's 400W, will that be enough?

I don't really know... plus it's overclocked... can't you change the 550 watts?
Or buy a new one, it wouldn't be a luxury...

Not easy (response to 6). The connectors between the motherboard and the power supply all have notches, so you can't plug them in backwards. And then, frying a PC with 12V and 5V would be surprising. The simplest thing is to open your PC and sniff around for any burnt smells. Of course, BEFORE doing that, you should unplug your PC from the wall socket, because there's a 50% chance, if the power supply has failed, that you'll get a huge shock.

It doesn't mean anything, they all are... But it seems that indeed, brands like Corsair, OCZ, Enermax, or Thermaltake are a good choice. In any case, the least worst. But there's no need to go over 550W...

If she smells like burnt caramel, it's quite probable.

I will send it back to Rue du Commerce for an exchange if it really is the power supply that is burnt out?

Given his setup, if he can change it, it wouldn't hurt to go for a 600 watts. Anything above that is unnecessary. Can't you get one? That way, the one I showed you, which I think is the best, would only cost you about 20 euros... not even that.

Do you think they will be okay with changing it?

Sure, it is definitely under warranty and the accident you had was not your fault, so yes you can change it... but you should know that the power supply is an important component in a PC and should not be neglected. You jeopardize your entire setup.

There are risks if I try with a power supply that has already been used on another computer (it's a 400W)?

You might risk saturating the power supply and potentially causing it to burn out... well, I'm not sure if 400 watts is enough, you know...

Well, if it hasn't burned out on the other computer, that's pretty good news. Generally, design or manufacturing defects become apparent right at the beginning of usage. If it has already been running at 200-300W for years on another PC, that's a good sign.

His current setup requires more than 400 watts, I think... especially since when it's marked 400 watts, it actually gives about 375 watts, depending on the amperage for 12 volts, for 5 volts...

Try with a 400 given your configuration, it's just the minimum.
