Dell power supply beeping.

Question

Hello,

I just moved into my new apartment and I had a problem when trying to plug in my laptop.

It's a Dell XPS M1530 and when I tried to plug in the charger, it started making a continuous beep and the LED doesn't light up anymore. It no longer sends power to my PC.

It had done this to me before, but it started working again afterwards. I was told that it wasn't an issue with the contact but with the transformer.

I imagine it's dead, but I just wanted to know if anyone has had this problem and was able to fix it themselves before investing in a new and costly power adapter.

I have the same problem right now with the power supply of my Dell XPS 1530 purchased about 10 months ago.
From time to time, when I plug in my power cable, the small green LED on the transformer stays off, a "beep beep" is heard from the transformer, and the computer is not powered. However, this does not happen all the time, sometimes it works correctly (at least for now...).
Since my computer is still under warranty (plus with an extended warranty of 3 or 4 years), I would like to know if this is a recurring issue...

Still not solving my problem, I had to change the socket,

however, a computer scientist explained to me that it does not come from a loose connection, but from the fact that the power supply must transform energy coming from a wall socket (110 or 220 V) to 19.5V for the computer,

and that this problem arises because the power supply is no longer able to distinguish between 110 and 220. So instead of just sending whatever, it hesitates and gives a beep :)

In short, not really a solution, but since the issue does not come from poor maintenance, I think the warranty should cover a replacement. I'll send it in and see.

so I've been using a Dell Inspiron 6400 for two years, and I have the same issue from time to time at startup, but it has never gone further, and I never worried about it!!!
It doesn't affect the functioning of my computer, it beeps and then after a few seconds everything works fine, I have this problem about once a month.

Hello Alexis and Norton540,
Since I was still under warranty, I called Dell and explained my issue. They sent me a new power supply which I received the very next day. I was surprised by Dell's quickness and efficiency. They didn't even check or collect the old power supply.
Like Norton540, at first it happened to me only very rarely, then it started to become more and more frequent... so if you are still under warranty, it is better to take advantage of it and have it replaced...

I have the same issue with my XPS that's 18 months old. I was convinced it was a loose connection in the power supply unit. From reading your messages, it seems to be something else and Dell must be aware of it since they didn't hesitate to send me a power supply unit under warranty.
However, UPS, their carrier, didn't do a good job because I still haven't received anything (3 days late).

The problem is that when I disconnect the power cable, the entire computer shuts down abruptly (restarts after an error). The battery doesn't take over like it usually does, even though it charges to 100% and continues to be diagnosed by Windows as in good condition.

For your information, a battery problem requiring replacement costs €132. I was told that the average lifespan of the components that equipped the XPS was just over a year... €132 every 18 months really makes you think...

It's clearly a nightmare for batteries in terms of prices.

I had to repair 2 power supplies as explained in the tutorial in the link above, and incidentally, the 9-cell battery of my Dell XPS laptop recently failed after 15 months of loyal service.

So indeed, I can buy a new one for 150 euros, but then I'll have to do it again in 15 months...

For those still under warranty, do not attempt any manipulation. Call technical support and they will replace your charger without too many questions; I did it in 10 minutes for mine and I'm getting a new one tomorrow, so no worries! (Long live the warranty extension, by the way).

exactly the same problem with an xps m1710.
I bought a Volfcraft transformer (cheaper but still 100E!) that I set to 19V and then on the seller's advice to 20V, but the battery is not charging! Practical! If I increase the voltage, I'm afraid the laptop won't appreciate it. I have the impression that I need an official Dell transformer... Like you, mine beeps and the diode has turned orange.
