Ticking sound coming from the PC

Hello, since yesterday, I've been hearing little sounds coming from inside my computer like little "ticks." What's strange to me is that they're not regular; sometimes they stop, then start again more intensely, and sometimes they come one after another quickly. Do you know where this might be coming from? I tried to securely reattach all the components just in case, but nothing changes, thanks.
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 3.5.2

    I would lean towards a dying disk that is starting to "squeak" (-> impending failure), so urgent data backup!

    heheh, as if I hadn't thought of that ...

    it doesn't even appear anymore in the workstation (only in DEVICE MANAGER, under mass storage with a yellow exclamation point and a "CODE 10")

    If that's the case, it's not a big deal. I formatted it 4 days ago, but it's strange; it's not that old after all. But I’d prefer it to be the hard drive that’s malfunctioning rather than another component. ^^

    your hard drive is nearing the end of its life, but you might be able to save it by reformatting it.

    The noise is probably due to an early mechanical failure; reformatting is unlikely to resolve the issue, right? However, if it's not very old, don't hesitate to check the manufacturer's website to see if it's still under warranty (3 to 5 years for some models).

    It is possible to fix a hard drive by putting it in the freezer; there have been instances where formatting resolved a 'hardware' problem, even if it's quite hard to believe.

      The freezer trick is to restart a hard drive after it has seized up. It is in no way repaired; it simply serves to urgently recover data. The hard drive is very likely to fail again once it warms up. I wouldn't store my data on a "repaired" hard drive like that ^^

    I have already frozen it several times, including once for 1 MONTH!!!

    I kept it during my exams (and yes, I forgot afterwards, I took it out a week ago between the meat and the ice cream :)
