mkv issues with vlc... Solved

Question

Hi everyone!!!
So I'm trying to play an mkv file with VLC.
But it doesn’t work even though it says on the VLC website that this program can play mkv files....
I think I need to install something like a codec or something else.
Does anyone have any ideas?

the best VLC to use for no more stuttering is 1.0.1
I tested all VLC versions (up to 1.0.5)
if you choose a version earlier than 1.0.0, you will not be able to play HD formats.
if you take 1.0.0, there will be stuttering on all HQ and HR formats (high quality and high resolution) and HD.
similarly, if you take 1.0.2, 1.0.3, 1.0.4 and of course 1.0.5, there will be few or no stutters in HQ and HR, but you will have them in HD.

unfortunately, almost all sites that offer VLC redirect you directly to the most recent VLC version.

so go to http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/ to test and choose the version that suits your computer best.

my configuration for the test: AMD Athlon 1GHz, 1024MB DDR RAM, GEFORCE 4200 Titanium 128MB DDR RAM.

ok I'll check that out but it's clear that I really don't want to change programs because honestly VLC plays everything!
it's still annoying to have to install codecs when VLC doesn't need any, there's really nothing to add...except for mkv!!!!

Hey, it's funny, I installed the container pack and it still doesn't work...
I'm lost!
What's funny is that it works perfectly with BS Player...
It's not the fact of switching programs that bothers me, but I enjoyed not having to install anything extra, especially not those overloaded codec packs...
With VLC, everything worked fine without adding anything!
Is it the same principle with BS?

Hi.
With BS you need to install additional codec packs, but the one that comes with it (KAZAA LITE) is generally sufficient for most divx. Once the right codecs are installed, BS is THE player par excellence (in 5 years of use, I've never had any problems).

Well, I'd like to find a way to watch an mkv with VLC because it's a great program that requires nothing extra... So there's never any problem!!!!
However, it works very well with MPC (Media Player Classic)

Hi! I had the same issue and I just downloaded the latest version of VLC, the .04 I think, and I can now play MKVs that didn't work before...   So give it a try!!

I always install the latest version of VLC, checking about once a month...

My problem is similar... I can play most MKVs, but I just downloaded a series in MKV format that includes an AC3 audio file that I can play & a RV40 video file that won't start...

I've gone through VLC's options, positioned my choices correctly via the menu tabs on the right video and audio tracks, but nothing works...

I tested with alternative Real with Media Player and got everything except the sound is in the original language and I can't choose French, whereas in the standard playback options I'm set to French :(

It's frustrating why they have to make huge MKV files with 40 integrated languages and super heavy formats PFFFF

It's nonsense... you can have a 10 MB AVI file in French that consumes 2% of the CPU, and next to it the same video in MKV that weighs 100 MB and uses 90% of the CPU and includes subtitles and audio tracks in 4000 useless languages

One audio file in French and the video is enough... it annoys me that they put 4000 languages for a movie and subtitles that are completely useless

It's like I'm going to enjoy watching the movie in Japanese with Russian subtitles for fun... really idiots

1/ huge CPU load
2/ useless subtitles
3/ 40 extra languages that are completely unnecessary

Soon we'll find codecs to decompress in real-time the divergence between the French and Russian sounds in a movie

Personally, I definitely prefer watching a movie or series in VOST Fr, it’s often much better than the French version...

Anyway, with VLC there’s no problem, it plays all formats, etc., except sometimes it won’t read an .mkv file, I don't get it. I’m going to try your solutions, though I believe my version is up to date.

Hi, I just downloaded a manga and the bad surprise is that VLC doesn't show the image (so personally I hate dubbed versions but I like mkv files even less!) Anyway, I'm downloading the latest version of VLC and it doesn't change anything, so my solution: I'm going back on the network to find this series in VOSTFR and in AVI. It's not a hassle but I don't want to burn a series that can't be easily watched on all computers... Anyway, the mkv format is depressing me.

Just to point out that you can install all the codecs you want on your machine, VLC will not work any better. This is because it works with its own codecs.

That is not the case with BS Player, Media Player Classic, and others that use the codecs installed on the machine.

And I believe I read that there are no plans at all to integrate RV40 into VLC because ffmpeg (used by VLC) struggles a lot with this codec.

Hum, so I'm not the only one with this problem... That reassures me, I'm a bit bothered about changing programs too, but since the MKV files that won't play are often the movies we absolutely want to see (Murphy's law, of course...) well, we'll just have to rely on BS. Personally, I can't get by without VLC... I'm too attached to it.
No way I'm reinstalling a bunch of codecs!!!
So for me, MKVs are replaced by the DivX or XviD version...

Hi, So I have the same problem with these mkv files; with VLC, I only get sound, the same with Windows Media Player, and with BSplayer I get an error message saying "unknown file format RV40" even though I downloaded new codecs just in case, etc... If anyone has an idea, I don't understand anything!

Yo, I had the same problem as Mr., Mrs., or Miss Smog (these genderless conversations between internet androgynes always leave me with a lingering taste of virtuality on the top of my cortex, and I scratch myself): VLC, even in its latest versions, only plays the sound of certain files in .mkv (matroska) format. I can't find the solution to be able to play them with VLC, but Media Player plays them just fine. Good evening,   here is what Core Player gave me when I requested to play an mkv file:  > TCMP's Core can not render the file: G:\Films\Série\Justin.Timberlake.FutureSex.LoveShow.2007.720p.HDTV.x264\Justin.Timberlake.FutureSex.LoveShow.2007.720p.HDTV.x264.mkv > No combination of filters could be found to render the stream.    So seriously, is there really no software to play this damn format, because it pisses me off to search for nothing,  I’m fed up with this format, can we really do nothing?????

install the video codec for your mkv (probably rv9, rv10, or vp6)....because I think it shouldn't cause any issues with the divx or xvid codecs...  An mkv file is a container in which we can store video, audio, subtitles, and chapter points....all of this recomposed gives us the movie..... An ogm file does the same thing but with fewer chapter points.... A divx file only takes audio (and not all formats, ogg excluded) and video (for subtitles, I believe it's managed by a separate file like .srt)....  When you can't play an mkv even though the player is theoretically capable, it means you are missing the video codec for the movie....  What you need to do is clearly see the difference between a container and codecs, many people do not understand this nuance....

Here is the new version of VLC 0.9.2, it can't read MKV. So I reinstalled version 0.8.6.d and there’s no stresssssssss  The only advice is to install an older version of VLC, that's all.

Creating a format that is impossible to read on home players is already stupid, but the worst part is that it is often impossible to convert it back to AVI or any other format compatible with PCs and laser players, the "brilliant" inventor of this crap having deemed it unnecessary to provide a way to go back. Hello, I have a reading issue with mkv files in VLC.

The videos start without any problems, but during playback, the video freezes. Sometimes the subtitles continue, but not always.

I encounter this problem with all sizes of mkv files: from 100 MB to 7 GB.

I have XP SP3. And what surprises me is that I didn't have any issues last year. This year, even with files from last year, I'm encountering the problem.

However, only VLC is running on my PC, and I’m not using all my CPU or RAM.

If someone could let me know how to avoid this problem, that would be great. Thanks in advance.

How to Play HD MKV or MKV Well in VLC?  VLC Player No Sound Solution: Solution 1, Restart your VLC player; Solution 2, select Tools > Preferences menu to open the Preferences dialog, select Audio on the left, and confirm that Enable audio is checked. Then click on the output module dropdown button and try another default.  MKV HD or MKV Skipping Solution: Select Tools > Preferences menu to open the Preferences dialog, then select All at the bottom of the dialog box, and then select Input / Codecs on the left. On the right side of the dialog box, in the Advanced group, set the file caching value to 1000.  MKV HD or MKV Choppy Solution: Try disabling hardware decoding. Go to the Tools > Preferences menu, select Input / > Codecs Video codecs > FFmpeg. Then set the hardware decoding value to Disable in the decoding group.  A Universal Solution: Install the appropriate codec pack. There are different free codec packs online that will allow us to decode and play MKV files. The downside of this approach is that you have to download a large number of codecs but if you only try to play one type of video file. Another downside is that these codecs do not always work well.  If none of the above solutions work for you or cannot resolve your issue, in that case, we strongly recommend an ultimate and commonly used method to fix "VLC MKV files not playing" - converting MKV to more compatible formats for VLC Player with Faasoft MKV to VLC Converter.
