Antenna in the attic, is it possible????

Hello,

I will soon be moving into a new house located in Flanders. I will be close to the Mont des Cats TV transmitter. Rather than installing a roof antenna, I would prefer to install an antenna in the attic (my roof is made of wooden trusses and clay tiles).

Do you think this is possible? What type of antenna should I buy?

It seems that where I am located, I have no buildings or even environment that could "interfere" with my reception from the transmitter (Strazeele, 59270).

Hi. I'm in Steenvoorde. I bought a caravan-style electronic antenna for €13 at Brico Depot. It's enough for 2 TVs on TNT even though I'm on the ground floor and there's a huge tree between my place and Mont des Cats. It's in the attic as well and it works perfectly. Don't invest in a special TNT antenna + amplifier, etc. It will cost you €50 without any extra quality. At worst, if it doesn’t work, they’ll take your antenna back at Brico Depot and give you a credit... a piece of PVC pipe, like for water drainage, will work as a mast.... Good reception.

A rooftop antenna for DTT in the attic, under the roof, depends on the power of the internal radioelectric field (dBµV/m), which depends on the particular environment, clearance, the radiated power of the transmitter in that direction, its distance and emission altitude, the absorption loss (attenuation) through the tiles being limited to a few dB. To compensate for the additional degradation, one could use a UHF antenna with a bit more gain than what would be necessary if the antenna were outside on the roof. A UHF preamplifier could also be considered to improve reception quality.

No one can guarantee in advance that the result will be correct; it requires some trial and error, which can also be conducted with a classic indoor antenna. http://www.dune-electronic.com/fr/photosb/2150.jpg which requires a 220 V socket under the roof... or a designer indoor antenna that works with standard tele-power, +5V.

I think that even in Steenvoorde, having the antenna in the attic is a risk for poorly receiving the TNT. The transmitter from the MdC is close, it's true, but digital TV can be temperamental in ways that were previously unknown, and reception, even with an outdoor antenna, can sometimes be full of uncertainties (bugs of uncertain origins). So to maximize your chances, it's better to install an antenna outside; there’s a spot facing the transmitter where the antenna isn't too visible and doesn't spoil your beautiful house (there's no need to go on the roof; a bent-arm antenna like those for satellites works perfectly)
