Samsung LE40M86BDX/XE TV Power On Issue Solved/Closed

Question

Hello,

I own a Samsung LCD TV model LE40M86BDX/XEC.

Normally, when you turn it on, the red LED blinks 4 or 5 times, a small sound occurs, and then it lights up.

For the past few days, when we try to turn it on, the LED blinks at least ten times accompanied by the small sound

which is not normal.

What problem could this be, and what do you suggest we do?

I confirm that by changing the 4 capacitors, the TV is working perfectly! I'm super happy!!

Here are some details on the characteristics of the capacitors to be replaced (they're all the same):
* 1000 µF
* 10V polarized (meaning there's a + and a - to respect, like the direction of a battery) - be careful with this, there are 3 in the same direction and 1 other in the opposite direction
* radial (meaning 2 legs downward)
* aluminum electrolytic (or "chemical")
* diameter 10mm
For your information: height 16mm (standard for 10V, and it doesn't matter if +/-)

* indicative price: €0.20 /unit

So the repair cost me: €0.80 + a bottle of white wine that I gave to the colleague who did the soldering for me.
For your information, it's the kind of soldering that anyone can do if they've soldered 1 or 2 times in their life, but I preferred it to be done properly, and that's his job....
Otherwise, to do it yourself you need a soldering iron, a soldering iron stand, solder, and a cutting pliers (it costs about €30 for a basic soldering iron).

Note 1: in Google, if you type "samsung LE40R73 won't start," the first site you should land on is a forum on futura. In there, there's a photo that clearly shows the part of the power board in question and the bulged capacitors

Note 2: I work in an aerospace electronics company and we prohibit the use of the brand of capacitors in question because they are known to be unreliable.

I hope this can help some people get started on repairs under good conditions.

I have the same problem for the past 2 or 3 days. Our Samsung LCD television (LNT4669) is having issues with turning on. When pressing the power button (on the remote or on the TV, we tested both), the red light turns on correctly, then we hear a click (indicating it's powering on), followed by another click (as if the TV is shutting down), and it alternates like this a few times before the TV actually turns on. When the TV has been off for a few hours, it takes longer (maybe 40-45 seconds) before the TV turns on, whereas if we turn it off and back on again within a short period, the startup is also quicker (about ten seconds).  I find this very intriguing. Our TV is about 2 years old and it has never done this before.  If you have any answers, it would be a great help.

Mine is still under warranty, a few days later I took it to the store's customer service where I bought it, after a quick diagnosis, the technician noted "power problem" and they kept it for 4 days. Since then, it's been working perfectly. I think the cause of this problem is persistent power outages, lightning and the like... See you later!

Well, I also have the same problem as you. I started by contacting Samsung, and they directed me to their authorized repairer (of course, it's over two years old, so no more warranty). Verdict: 500 euros to replace the motherboard and transformer. As a little anecdote, I also have a Samsung fridge that's going to be two years old, and it just broke down.

In conclusion, Samsung is nice, but not reliable, so I will never buy Samsung again.

Hello,  I had the same problem with my TV, 2.5 years out of warranty. The authorized Samsung repairman told me it would cost €400 to change the power supply board and the main board.  Not one, not two, I took apart the TV to see how it's made inside, and surprise, it's just a basic PC after all. I checked the references of the different boards to see if I could find them cheaper online because changing them isn't harder than swapping a graphics card.  And then, ohhh surprise, I type in the reference and realize that loads of people have the same issue with this TV, it's crazy. And actually, I found the solution online, and for €8, it turns out there were 4 capacitors that blew (I suspect a design flaw in the board), and boom, it's back to life like in '40. Instead of €400 for the repair, it was only €8, phew, I’m glad I didn't trust those service after-sale thieves.  Best regards.

I'm having the same problem for a week with my Samsung L40R71 TV, which is now 2 years and 11 months old. It's still under warranty since I took an extension for 5 years. But the issue is that I bought it online, so if I have to send it back at my own expense, it will cost me way more than 8€ for the capacitors. Plus, I risk being without a TV for quite a while.  So I would also be interested to know which capacitor references are needed and possibly where to find them.  Thank you.

Indeed, you just need to change 4 capacitors located on the power supply board, you can't miss them, they're the bulged ones. They are 1000 microfarad 10 volt capacitors. If you have an old PC motherboard, there are plenty inside. For me, it cost 0 euros. Thanks for the solution, guys, and good luck with the repairs to others!

Hello, I've had this problem for a month too.  I’m really lucky my TV is still under warranty for a few days. ^^  I called Samsung's customer service, they said they would call me back but I haven't been contacted as agreed.  I got in touch again and learned that the warranty service intervention hadn’t been taken into account^^, so I provided my details again, etc., for them to take the necessary steps (I called back and this time my request was acknowledged).  I’m waiting this Tuesday morning, January 5th, for the part replacement, I hope they’ll replace the entire board with one that won’t fail in two years. :s  I’ll keep you updated ...

Hello,  I notice that I'm not the only one in this situation; it's very concerning to see that most of you are having the same issue as me, and this after 2 years of use.  My Samsung TV is also a little over 2 years old and takes forever to turn on, and it's getting worse each day; soon I'll have to turn it on in the morning to have TV at night (lol).  I will try to dismantle my TV and see where the 4 capacitors are located. I don't know the prices of a repairman, but there is no way I'm paying for a repair that costs half the price of my TV.  If anyone has more info on this kind of failure, and especially if a lawsuit against Samsung is being initiated for hidden defects, count me in to sign the petition.

I have the same problem with a LE40M86BDX. Since November 2009, it started to have trouble turning on and eventually wouldn’t turn on at all last Sunday night -- I couldn't watch OM Bordeaux, grrrrrr
....
Following the advice of others who had the same issue as me, I opened the TV, disassembled the power supply, and found that the affected capacitors were indeed "burnt out."
I headed to the local electronics store, got 4 polarized radial capacitors 1000µF at 10V for 2 euros!!
I did the repair myself, thanks to those who posted the solution.

It's a shame that Samsung lets this kind of problem slip through! As far as I'm concerned, next time I will switch brands!

Same problem for 2 weeks, the TV takes between 5 and 30 minutes to turn on with a constant clicking sound. Once we try to turn it off, it turns back on by itself after about an hour.  I just contacted Samsung customer service, who explained that I need to get in touch and have the TV repaired by their authorized repairer AT MY EXPENSE since the TV has not been under warranty for a few weeks (while knowing that they had already replaced the screen after a few months because it was faulty).... no commercial gesture on their part and the service manager didn't even bother to correspond with me....  Anyway, I’m going to get the TV repaired as instructed (and thanks for the information) and I intend to initiate legal proceedings for hidden defects or something like that through my legal protection because at 2000 euros for the TV it really hurts my "butt" to still be someone’s cash cow.... and given the number of people who have EXACTLY the same problem after more than 2 years, and therefore out of warranty but rarely before.... it really smells like a commercial strategy.

Hello everyone, I see that I'm not the only one with a startup problem on my Samsung LE40M86BD TV... it's 2 years and 3 months old, and for the past month, it's been taking longer and longer to turn on... in fact, it's been 2 hours now that I've been hearing the "click click" and it's still not on! So, I called the Auchan customer service where I bought it to find out the repair costs... I made sure to mention that I knew where the problem was coming from, just to avoid getting ripped off! :)... I'm waiting for their call... and if it's really too expensive, I'll also order the capacitors, hoping to find someone capable of doing the soldering... anyway, thanks a lot for your information!

Hello everyone, I see that Samsung... pfff  I'm having a problem with my LCD, the TV was on and suddenly it turned off for no reason with the red light blinking  and now I can't turn it on anymore, I've tried everything: unplugging it and plugging it back in, trying with the remote control, and even turning it off with the button on the side of the screen, it doesn't respond, it keeps blinking non-stop  my screen is a le26b450, I think it's 66cm  what should I do? Is there anyone who has the solution  thank you in advance

Well, for the anecdote, I just changed these capacitors (3 in my case)
the TV works perfectly again, seriously I'm amazed I managed to fix it myself even though I have two left hands...
cost: 15 euros for the soldering iron at Leroy, 25w
2 euros for the desoldering pump, super practical for removing solder
2 euros for the desoldering braid to remove what's left and clean the surface before resoldering
2 euros for the spool of solder
3 euros for the 3 capacitors 1000 microfarads/10v (I know it’s expensive but I’ll explain why)

the most annoying part was actually finding these 3 or 4 capacitors depending on the model... I went to 6 TV repair shops and some refused to sell them to me but wanted me to leave the TV for repair and thus make me pay for inverters and the like....
others were straight up asking 20 euros per capacitor.... a scandal considering you can find them online for 0.30 euros for 5 but the problem is you have 7.5 euros in shipping costs... that's why I bought them even at 1 euro each.

I guess it's probably not great to leave it running 24/7, but I’m going to try to get it fixed this weekend! I don't really see how changing capacitors could create a sound when starting up/shutting down the TV. personally, I find it cool but a bit strange anyway :x

I give a big shout-out to those who know about TVs and took the time to explain on this forum where this bug comes from and especially how to fix it !!!!! After changing the 4 bulging capacitors, the TV started up on the first try ;) This was the first time I attempted this kind of "small" delicate soldering, a bit stressful but in the end, it really went well. Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu to everyone who took the time to explain the steps to follow to repair my TV!

So, I'm not a pro at soldering, and I don't even have a soldering iron! So, I opened my TV, placed it flat on my bed... there I drew the wiring diagram of my motherboard on a sheet of paper... just in case!!... I unscrewed my motherboard, and I called a small repairman specialized in electronics, I explained to him that he needed to desolder the 4 bulging capacitors (you can definitely see when they're gone), and that he should replace them.... he reluctantly agreed for a sum of 15 euros... I didn’t bargain, I think I did well, considering the prices that repair services ask for!
I had also called several repairmen and shops before finding this one who didn’t have any capacitors!!! Of course, given how cheap they are (15 cents), they don’t make any profit!........
Anyway, my repairman had 20V capacitors only, and it works too, it just takes a bit more space on the motherboard in terms of diameter... but there’s enough space, so no problem!

So, I just had to reassemble the motherboard, and everything works perfectly!!!

Same for mine, my Samsung LE40M86BDX just gave out 2 days before the warranty expired, it won't turn on and the LED is blinking. I was lucky, but it's not normal, I see that they break down all after just about 2 years, it feels like it's programmed to fail. It went for repair, they told me 2 weeks to solder 4 capacitors, that's long, but hey, I'm not complaining, at least it's still under warranty. Good luck to everyone with your Samsung, I think I'm going to switch to SONY!!!

To reply to Adam   I didn't change the card, just 4 capacitors 1000 uF 10v  I went to the local store, and they didn't have 10v, so I used 4 capacitors of 16v 1000uF  and it's actually better because I think the 10v were a bit tight  remaining available  best regards  jojo

Hello, another malfunction occurred 3 weeks before the warranty expired on the LE46F86BD model. However, I did attempt the repair because I indeed found 2 capacitors 2200uF 10V in the upper right corner of the board that were bulging. After finding 2 identical ones in old PC power supplies, I proceeded with the replacement and the television restarted immediately. I put the faulty capacitors back just before the repair service came on-site 8 days after reporting the issue. They replaced the entire board.  The soldering is very easy to do because there is plenty of space on the board; it's really child's play. You just have to respect the polarity of the capacitors and not get them the wrong way around when putting them back in place.

I bought a television, the LE46FBDX, which cost me nearly 2000 euros despite my wife's reservations, and which is now 2 years and 6 months old, so no longer under warranty.
At the beginning of November, the television would restart on its own. Therefore, it was impossible to watch it.
In fact, Samsung was performing over-the-air firmware updates, that's what they claimed. The update went badly.
Fortunately, it was still under warranty. But I struggled for 3 weeks without a television before the Samsung authorized repairman (insolent customer service) came to manipulate the remote to install this update. I won't tell you how frustrating it was to see my television in my living room non-functional for those 3 weeks.

Today, my television completely refuses to turn on, making a constant clicking sound with the LED flashing on and off (actually, this really started on March 20 with an exponentially increasing wait time before it would turn on).
Thanks to your experiences, I took apart my TV and found that two 2200 microF capacitors are blown. I will replace them tomorrow and keep you updated. I was starting to look for an authorized repairman.

Samsung are dishonest because this is all intentional to force customers to buy a new television.

Hi Magneto123,

I advise you to do the soldering yourself because it's not really difficult.
The capacitors are far enough apart so you won't risk damaging other components. You need at least 2 people, one to hold the board and you to remove the capacitors. The capacitors cost €0.20 each.
In one of my comments a bit higher up, I posted a link that shows you the capacitors in several photos.

Hi Magneto123, it's normal for the rear cover not to come off in one go; you need to go around the screen with a small flat screwdriver and pry it up. Are you sure you removed all the screws?? I had the same problem as all of you with a LE40M86BDX/XEC model that broke down 3 years after purchase.  I had two damaged capacitors. Values: 2200 microfarads, 10 V, radial model  2.10 euros at Place de la Nation in Paris, totaling 4.20 euros  I'm not handy, I borrowed a soldering iron, and once the two capacitors were changed, the TV restarted immediately without any issues.......  Thanks to everyone who posted here and allowed me to make this repair.  For information, I have 1000 microfarad 10 V capacitors in stock if anyone is interested.  Pascal

My Samsung LCD TV was also making a ticking sound at startup and was taking longer and longer to turn on, no more warranty, so I took the back off the LCD and saw the swollen capacitors, so I went to a shop at Place de la Nation to find the capacitors, I got a good brand at 16V, then I replaced the capacitors. And it works and the issue is gone. Thanks to those who share this information, it helps us spend less during times of crisis after saving for a long time to buy what’s supposed to be a marvel of technology at an exorbitant price. I will no longer buy Samsung.

As for the polarity, yes it's easy to see, you just have to look before desoldering and soldering back in the same way.

Well, there you go, operation successful. The guy from Selectronic was perfectly aware.  The seller, seeing that my wife didn’t know anything: "What's it for?" My wife: "A TV" The seller: "Oh! It's a Samsung"  So clever. Instead of the 5 10V capacitors, he gave him 16V ones.  I desoldered the bulged ones and soldered in the new ones. There's enough space, so we won’t risk damaging any other solder joints.  Tested it before putting the cover back on, and it worked right away this time. So coooollll  Thanks again for the tip.

Hello everyone,  A big thank you to those who have contributed to this forum. I went to an electronic parts dealer. He advised me to replace the 10 Volt capacitors with 25 Volt ones, pointing out that Samsung used parts at the limit of the load. (10 volts for 9 used) With 25V, I would be at ease. The shop that did the repair is on Rue de Montreuil in the 11th. It took me a total of 10 minutes and cost 14.5 euros for the parts and labor.  There you go, good luck and thank you again.

Hello, I just had the same problem with a Samsung LE40M86BDX 102cm (piece of junk by the way), 15 days of "clack clack" and no power the last week, so I followed the advice on the capacitors (I replaced the 5 capacitors, the 10V1000µF with the 16V1000µF): cost of the operation: €3.59 and I soldered everything at the seller's place for €20 (yes, it's pricey for soldering 5 capacitors lol). That’s a change from the €450, €65 quote, and €320 for repairs, and so on! So, I'm making a call to try to launch an operation (whatever the nature) against Samsung. Once again, a big thank you to the one who found the issue and the fix for us.

Hello,  same for me, LE46FBDX, the two 2200uF capacitors blew after 2 years and 2 months! Ordered from Radiospares and everything is fine. I put in 25V ones, they're bigger and a bit tight but with longer leads we managed. Just FYI, the board says it operates at 15V and the 2 dead capacitors were 10V!!! In short, the failure was inevitable: what a shame.  Thanks for this topic without which I would have struggled to fix it.

Like everyone else, I also had an ignition problem until today, and the TV wouldn't turn on anymore, so I took off the back panel (2 dead capacitors, black on top) disassembled it and went to look for replacements at the local electronics store, 1 euro each at 16V, so 2.20. I soldered the capacitors Test OKKK I'M HAPPY!!!!!! Time taken for disassembly, store visit, and reassembly around 1 hour and 30 minutes.

I have the same problem as you, a black screen, at first, 5 minutes, 10 minutes...
I therefore looked at your advice, I disassembled my TV and I found three swollen capacitors. I replaced all four with 16 V 1000uF, but the problem remains the same.
Please help me because a TV for 1200 euros for two and a half years is a bit painful.

I would like to contribute to the "edifice" of SAMSUNG by pointing out a similar problem:  - Full HD LCD TV 119 cm model LE46A676A.  - Purchased at the end of July 2008, after 2 years and 3 months of use, my dear TV no longer turns on and the small red LED at the bottom right is blinking accompanied by a little noise.  In light of all your accounts, it seems obvious to me that this is a recurring defect and I will therefore take action in court for an injunction to expedite the process.  Do any of you have the same model as mine? How many capacitors should I change? What characteristics do they need to have?   As for me, Samsung is done; my next choice will lean towards Sony or Panasonic or others if you have suggestions....

Hello, I don't have the same model (le46f86bd) but I have the same symptoms; I turn it on, it clicks, and the LEDs on the touch side light up gradually. This symptom indicates that the electricity gradually charges your capacitors, and since the capacitors are faulty, they take a long time to recharge. The capacitor is a bit like a battery!!!  Remove the back cover and identify the power supply; there is a transformer and a lot of capacitors, it's round and black, it says 10v, 105°c, 1000uF on it. If the tops of these capacitors are a bit bulged, they are faulty!!!  Find an electronic component seller and go there with the faulty parts and solder them.  Best regards  Feihong

Well, it's my turn to share my experience. I have a Samsung LE46A676 for 2 years and 4 months and last week it started making the "clack clack" noises.
After reading the forum, I decided to open it up (I saw the Darty customer service beforehand, but they offered to fix it for a high price... and Samsung's customer service has still not responded to me to this day).
Indeed, I found that both 820µf and the 1000µf capacitors were swollen.
So I replaced the two 820s and the two 1000s, using 16V for the 1000µf ones.
I reassembled the TV and it started up instantly. I did several tests in standby mode and it works perfectly. Thank you very much to the forum.

A quick aside regarding the topic: However, I have lost the sound! When I increase the volume, the headset symbol appears on the screen but nothing comes out, even if I plug in a headset. There must be a bug somewhere. And I absolutely cannot see where to look to try to fix this. It didn't happen before my disassembly and I took all the precautions. All the wires are reconnected to their place, and there's no liquid that could have spilled on the board.. Help

I've recently been experiencing the same issue with my LE40F86 BD X. The screen turns on and then turns off by itself repeatedly with a switch-like noise (a slight click).

To start, I followed instructions on some forums and replaced the four faulty capacitors. Once powered back on, the TV continued to turn off and on by itself...

I deduced that there was a more significant failure in my power supply system, so I ordered a power supply board: BN44-00167 model C

Fifteen days and €100 later, after placing the order, I received this board. I hurried to connect it. And there, the same symptoms appeared after installing this brand new power supply circuit...

I admit I don't know what else to do. Do you have any ideas?

I opened the cover and none of the capacitors are bulging.

There are different sizes, voltages, and capacitances in microfarads.

Do you have a solution or should I change them all?

Same symptoms as everyone else --> change the capacitors to 16V instead of 10V. Total: €1.56 Time: let's say ... 3 hours to search for valuable advice online, go buy the capacitors, disassemble, solder, reassemble, and ... "enjoy" that it works! For the past two months, when I turn it on, it lights up then turns off, the diode blinks, it turns back on, etc., this cycle lasts for ten minutes before it works normally. I had the damaged capacitors replaced, but on test night, I hadn't put the back cover on again in case the failure would return quickly and also to prevent it from overheating. My kid touched a component (Fan7382) while the TV was on; luckily, nothing happened to him. The TV screen turned black right afterward. The replaced capacitors didn't bulge, but now I have the same symptoms as before... What could have burned out? Is it the Fan7382? The tubes?

Hello everyone, and thanks to this site and to everyone who helped me fix my Samsung TV...   I want to share with you a LITTLE TRICK I DISCOVERED that can help you!!   First, I started by changing all the capacitors on the power supply board, as suggested earlier in the forum (a little info, use 25v ones, no problems, they're better and more common)   But dang, still the click, click of the relay!!   So after seeing on the forum about the IC issue with 8 pins on the electronic board, the second one, where all the external connectors are, but on the other side of the connectors on the TV side of the board, you need to take it apart, the IC is located near the word EEPROM written on the board...   I ordered it BUT ALREADY PROGRAMMED FOR SAMSUNG on this site, BUYLAND.FR, (found a bit higher up on the forum), very good, delivered 24 hours later, a bit more expensive, but nothing compared to a new TV...   http://www.buyland.fr/store/product_info.php?products_id=1767   Then I assembled it (easy for me, soldering is my profession) and!!! Dang still the click, click, what a drag!!   Then it came back to me a MANIPULATION I had seen, I can’t remember where, but it said to hold the power button down for 2 minutes, with the TV plugged in, and that it would do a RESET...   So I tried, and THERE'S A MIRACLE, a long beep and the TV started up perfectly!!   So I think you can try this manipulation BEFORE changing the IC, because I didn’t try the manipulation after changing the capacitors!!! So give it a shot, it might work?? Hello everyone...  I am really surprised by the number of people experiencing this problem, and that there is no way to address it through Samsung. So on my side, I have a Samsung LE40R86BDX that initially took a long time to start, then twice, the screen turned on by itself with the volume at max, until last week when it decided not to start at all :(  I did my research online and found many articles about these infamous capacitors. So I opened my TV, and to my surprise, the 4 capacitors 10V 1000µF 105° were bloated. Some articles mentioned switching to 25V, so I ordered that, and embarked on a little soldering workshop for nearly 2 hours :( The soldering wasn’t easy with a 25W iron, but at least I don't risk damaging the traces on the board... Once the work was finished, I reconnected everything and waited. The TV turned on the first time, the sound came back, but there was no picture :((( Only the backlight was working. And after 2-3 attempts and a disassembly to check my soldering, the screen acted like before: click click at startup, the backlight flickering, and the TV "rebooting".  If anyone has ideas or leads to follow, I'm all ears... Because even though the Christmas holidays are approaching, buying a TV was not in my plans.  Thank you very much.

After spending a lot of time on this forum, I've noticed that many have had the same problem as me. My Samsung TV is having trouble turning on due to those pesky capacitors... The day before yesterday, I had never opened the back of a TV, but thanks to all your comments, I did it, and the capacitors are indeed bulging.

I am therefore looking for these famous capacitors to start soldering, but there is one for which I have a doubt about the reference, and I don't want to make mistakes.
There is one (blue) 470µf 25V 105°, that one is fine, I'm sure about it.

But then there are 2 blue ones 1000µf 25V 105° AND 1 other 1000µf 25V 105° as well, but black and a bit bigger.... So does this size difference matter even though the references written on them are the same? There is still one thing that differs, on the two blue ones it says w1a and on the black one it says w2a... but I don't know what that means...

Thanks in advance if someone can clarify... I have photos in case, but you can't see the references, just the size and color...

Hello everyone I've had a LE46A676 for 5 years that I bought for €2200 with the home cinema The capacitor issue happened to me in less than 2 years; Samsung made it last just long enough to avoid the warranty, as I didn't "cover myself with a registered letter" I GOT SCREWED (TO BE POLITE); Fortunately, thanks to the post found here, I managed to fix it for 4 capacitors at €0.80.... To this day, I have another problem: upon turning it on (cold), the screen stays black for a few seconds and then lights up on the requested channel. In the upper left corner, about 1/3 wide and 1/2 high, I have lines (banding) that float, as if the convergence was faulty, the rest of the image is fine. Then after 5/10 minutes (once it has warmed up), everything returns to normal. Is it a capacitor that I didn't notice the first time (I changed 4), or is it something else, or something entirely different?  Since Samsung's response, and their renewal policy.... I also have the home cinema that makes a rolling noise when playing a DVD, and other equipment from the brand, I'm replacing with another brand. Enough is enough  Thank you for your insights again

Hello, I opened my TV and found 4 bulging capacitors on the power board; while looking at the other boards or circuits (I don't know what to call those green plates), I spotted 3 other bulging capacitors on 2 other circuits.   I would like to change them, but they are connected by a wire or rather a strip, unlike the power board, and I don’t know how to remove it in order to change those capacitors.   Is it possible to try to unscrew the circuit and turn it over to desolder and solder while keeping the wires connected?   Or do you know how to remove these strips? I’m hesitant to touch them for fear of making a mistake.

So, I'm wondering about this startup issue, as some testimonies say the problem persists even after changing the capacitors. In any case, I will replace these two capacitors and we'll see the result.
