Smtp mail sending server problem / orange

I use Mail (Version 3.6 (935/935.3))
Actually I can receive my emails via the receiving POP server which works, but I can't send anything via the Orange SMTP...

Since November 1, 2009 I have the same difficulties that some of you have encountered at the end of September. Being on Mail (macOS X Safari) I receive the emails but every time I want to send one, I am asked for my mail/account password and every time it says: incorrect.
I asked Orange to confirm that this password is correct. When I go to the Orange portal, I go through assistance, then identify yourself: I can no longer enter my email address or the password, everything is grayed out and nothing prints. It has been five days that Orange's service searches without much result. Last night I was able to send two emails and the outage happened again.
Since the end of September have you been repaired and how please?

I had exactly the same problem, for a few days now. I could no longer send emails from "Mail" (but I could receive them) even though it had been working fine before...
Yet I hadn't changed anything in the POP or SMTP settings of my Orange account...
I followed exactly Janick's procedure and it works now, thank you very much.
But I don't understand why, all of a sudden, everything got out of whack like that and why using the password as authentication is the solution. But it works, which is a good thing :)

Well the problem persists in 2012. I’m on LION and without warning I could no longer send mail. Thanks Janick because your solution is precious and unfortunately still relevant.

Problem solved in the same way in Mail Leopard - big thanks to janick ;-)
I describe the symptoms, what could help others:

I had a similar problem last year on my MacBook under Leopard, which I solved at the time by doing a clean install, not finding a solution. I have since moved to Snow.
This problem of being unable to send emails appeared for about a fortnight on my wife's MacBook under Leopard while everything has been fine for several years;
I relate here the details, which could potentially help others ... :
She has a primary Free address, a secondary address and we are with Orange
-receiving posed no problem
-but impossible to send to the server (we are with Orange); no problem to send with Gmail as sending server
- moreover, messages sent by Gmail to the Free address were rejected by the Orange server as spam ... !
-and at the same time, no problem to send from the iPad
-so I tried on a clean system (Snow) installed on an external disk, no problem either - it was therefore coming from my wife's user account on her Mac.

Janik's solution resolved the problem immediately: sending now possible without any problem.

... but, wanting to detail the initial problem (and notably note the error messages in Mail), I reconfigured my wife's account as originally, that is to say without authentication ... but, unexpectedly, the sending problem does not reoccur!

So it remains mysterious, but janik's trick at least unlocked the situation.
