Thunderbird displays unreadable messages from

Hello,
I've been using Thunderbird very successfully with Orange for several years. Since 04/05/09, the last readable message I received from Orange, the messages arriving in my Thunderbird inbox are unreadable (they look like a coded language), empty, or all jumbled...
Do you have any idea what might be happening?....
Thank youoh
Configuration: Linux Firefox 3.0.8

Hello,

I had the same issue yesterday with Thunderbird 3.0, and after searching a lot, I found a solution.

I right-clicked on the "Inbox" folder, then on properties, and there I clicked on rebuild index.

All my unread and/or mixed messages became readable again.

I was scared, thinking I wouldn't be able to recover them.

thank you very much for your response, which I will try as soon as possible (probably tomorrow..) because this problem has occurred again!
last time, having found nothing, we reformatted the PC but I must say that this time, I was a bit hesitant, haha!!
I wonder where this problem could be coming from. I have a laptop with Thunderbird which, at the same time, didn't have the same problem at all, so it's not the server as I thought.... could it be because on the "sick" PC, Linux is next to Windows? Indeed, I shared the disk with Windows.....
have a good evening!

According to my company's IT department, this could be due to a sudden shutdown of Thunderbird 3.0 while it is indexing, or it could be due to an attachment in an email that is causing everything to malfunction.

In any case, they are not 100% sure and are still testing version 3.0 to ensure that everyone can migrate to this version. They have encountered some issues with attachments that have disappeared, for example.

Thank you again and congratulations,
I applied your method tonight and it's good, I found everything back!
Great!!

Thank you very much Endeneu. I have retrieved all my messages. I confirm this procedure, which is therefore the solution to the messages that seem encrypted in Thunderbird.

Best regards

hello

when you ask tb to display the source of a message (shortcut = ctrl-U), is the content understandable?
if so, can you paste the envelope in the forum.

thanks

Thank you Dubcek for these leads, I will try but I don't have the time for a few days... I will post a message afterwards.

Hello momorico,

Dubcek is partially right: the second part is indeed an attachment (description then content encoded in base64). But I doubt that any compression could fix anything.

On the other hand, for the first part, it almost looks like base64 content encoded with a first line truncated; but more importantly, the envelope for this possible attachment is missing... (perhaps you haven't provided us with the complete source of the example message). But the most serious issue is that this email has no envelope (no message-ID, return-address, or any received fields, etc.)

I tried to take your message, to paste it into a tb file (i.e., ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/profile/xxxxx.default/mail/local folders/pebkac <= to be adapted to your system) => when tb tries to interpret the pebkac folder, it can't understand anything and doesn't display any messages!

If you confirm that *everything* you see displayed with "View Source" (Ctrl-U) is indeed in your post, then I don't know what is going on: it's as if tb is eating the beginning (or the first few KB) of each message and only leaving you the end, which is obviously incomprehensible when it's the encoding of attachments.

thank you pebkac,
yes, I sent you everything that Ctrl-U gave me.
and you're right, I also sometimes get empty messages. and all of this since 04/05 after a message from the orange server informing me that they were terminating my anti-spam following my request, which I absolutely did not ask for.
I also contacted them at "abuse@orange.fr" and they told me this:
"Hello,

A spammer trick (which exploits a vulnerability in Internet protocols that does not provide any control over the sender's email address) or a virus are the probable causes of these non-delivery reports of your emails (Mail Delivery Service). The remote mail server responds here to messages that are sent to a non-existent address in its domain under your email.

In conclusion,
- either a spammer is spoofing your email to divert emails to you,
- or one of your devices or that of one of your regular correspondents is compromised by a virus; (this trick of spammers is commonly used by recent viruses to spread under randomly chosen email addresses from the hard drive of the compromised computer without its owner's knowledge).

We invite you to check the security of your installation at the links provided below:
- virus check:

Best regards,

but I know that they are also having issues with their server and that 20,000 mailboxes reportedly had problems around the same dates as mine.

anyway, I am quite troubled especially since I find thunderbird very good and I have never had issues before... well, I can apparently still receive normally on orange but it's not sustainable: too heavy, too slow, limited in options... etc...
I wonder if I shouldn't install another email client...

thank you again for taking the time to respond to me..

Hello,

You can indeed test with another email client if you want, but I doubt that will solve the problem. You just need to make sure that the tested software leaves a copy of your email on the server (if you skip this, you might end up with tb that contains everything until April 15, evolution that contains emails from April 15 to 17, machin-mail that contains the email from April 17 from 9:30 AM to 6:47 PM, etc., and tb that contains the rest because "that" has been fixed... difficult to manage, right?)

Have you already checked your inbox through the orange.fr portal (https://login.orange.fr/captcha?return_url=https%3A%2F%2Frms.orange.fr%2Fmail%2Fwelcome%3F ? It would be interesting to see how messages are displayed by Orange before they arrive in tb.
So wait to receive an email on the orange portal, display it and click "view the full header" located at the top right of the displayed email? Copy the header into a notepad. Launch tb and retrieve the email. The email you checked on Orange is (normally) now in tb. What happens if you do Ctrl-U (or view source) on this email? Do you have the same headers? If not, can you post both?

As an example of a properly constructed header, here is an ad for Viagra received on my Orange account.
It clearly shows the return-path, message-id, a few received, and other fields (nb: of course, the addresses are fake)

Hello to you, Pebcak and Dubcek!!!
Here I am again with my unsolved problem...
Yes, I am currently checking my messages on the Orange website. I noticed this morning that one of the messages I received in my inbox on the site had a large coded section at the end as well. I am in contact with Orange's abuse service (who is not helping me at all by the way!!!) to whom I forwarded this message to take a look, but in the transfer, that whole part disappears...
I went to the site that Pebcak recommended (https://login.orange.fr/captcha?return_url=https%3A%2F%2Frms.orange.fr%2Fmail%2Fwelcome%3F ) but I found it's the same as when I go on Orange.

Hi,

first of all (before I forget to mention it): every time you are about to copy/paste data from your computer into a forum (any forum), you need to go through the notepad step (or any text editor) to hide email addresses.
it's not so much because readers of ccm will see those addresses (including yours), it’s mainly because there are email collection bots that spend their time scouring forums to pick up any email address that might be found there. Of course, these addresses will then be added to spammers' mailing lists.

regarding the header: it’s really very particular!
in any case, Orange is not to blame because the headers are correct. It’s in the moment when the email leaves Orange and the moment when it’s displayed to you that it gets altered.
so, some additional details are needed, unfortunately tedious to obtain:
- go to Tools -> Options
- go to the Advanced category, General tab
- click on "Config Editor" (this allows you to modify settings, but do not change anything!)
- type "cod" (without quotes) in the filter area of the window that appears
- note the lines written in bold (these are the ones where the status is not "default")
- type "cryp" in the filter area and note the bold lines
- do the same for "mime"
- finally, close the config editor
then, you go back to ccm and post these lines. I will then set the same settings on my end to see if it does the same thing.
and since we’re digging into your tb’s config, could you tell me which extensions are installed (Tools -> Add-ons)?

see you soon

Hello Pebkac,
first of all, my apologies for inadvertently sharing your address and exposing you to spam....
I'll keep that in mind for future reference.
I did your manipulations and here's the result:

- For cod: no bold lines
- For cryp: two bold lines:
mail.identity.id1.encryption_cert_name (nothing in value)
mail.identity.id1.encryptionpolicy (value: 0)
- For mime: no bold lines

and for the extensions, I have none.

thank you!

Good evening,

Here are the news: After reinstalling the system (formatting and switching from Ubuntu to Xubuntu), it turned out that the problem hasn't been resolved! It seems that the issue comes from my old messages because:

- When I restore my old messages in Thunderbird, the problem comes back.

I have therefore deleted all my old messages, which seems to have fixed the problem. But where exactly does the issue come from, which message, if it's in a message, how can I know?

Moreover, it appears that 20,000 Orange mailboxes are experiencing a problem due to a server error (according to 1013) but denied by Orange.

So is it a server failure or defective message(s)? The debate is open...

Thank you, see you soon.

Good evening,

Although this thread is a few months old and since it is not resolved, I allow myself to reopen it as I have just encountered this problem on a friend's computer. This issue was somewhat randomly resolved with a cleaning of the incoming mail folders and a compacting of the folders. This solution does not suit me; I would have liked a more rational explanation.

For your information, the ISP is Orange.

I confirm that rebuilding the index resolves the issue.

Good evening everyone!

Thank you very much for this solution that worked wonderfully!

Hello,
thanks to those who responded and found effective answers: rebuilding the index works very well but I have to do it regularly, which is quite annoying...
I noticed a strange message that is now in my spam folder. It is empty and only has the date 01/01/1970 and the time: 01:00.
I have tried several times to delete it but it always comes back...
Do you have this anomaly and is it related to the initial problem? If so, is there a solution you might know of???
Thanks
