My problem:

Hello, I have a rather annoying issue. When I click on certain software in the dock of my Mac, they do not open and a question mark appears on the software's icon. For example, I click on TextEdit, and on the small image where we see a written sheet and a pencil: a small question mark shows up on the image, and it is impossible to open the software. And when I go through Finder in Applications: It's not there.

I have this issue with the question mark and the software not opening with:
-Photo Booth
-TextEdit
-System Preferences (which means I no longer have access to session management, changing the desktop background...)

Additional information to help me. My computer:
Mac OS X
Version 10.4.11
Processor: 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2

That's all, please feel free to respond, as I am counting on your help. Thank you in advance.
Configuration: Mac OS X Safari 525.27.1

Good evening,

When this phenomenon occurs, it means that the application linked to the icon in the Dock can no longer be found by the system. Either this application has been moved, or it has been renamed. The icons in the Dock are nothing more than shortcuts. They are aliases that point to an original file. You should not rename or move files, applications, or folders after placing them in the Dock. You can do it, but then you have to put the application, folder, or file back in the Dock.

If you cannot find your applications, it may be because you accidentally moved them.
Use Spotlight, or better yet, EasyFind to locate them.

If you have discarded these applications, you need to reinstall them from the Mac OS 10 installation CD. This can be done by either reinstalling the system with the Archive and Install option, or by using Pacifist to extract the installation packages of these software. See Here for an example of how to use Pacifist to find the installation packages.

Sincerely

Thank you for your response. I tried with Spotlight, and I didn't find anything, so they have probably disappeared from my computer. And I would like to know where to find the "Archive and Install" function. Thank you in advance.

I provided the link to the complete page that explains how to reinstall Mac OS 10.
The Archive and Install option is a choice that is made during one of the steps of the Mac OS 10 installation.
See this paragraph from the link I provided earlier.

Good evening.
