Hello, I have a DANE ELEC so speaky 500 GB external hard drive.
I formatted this drive on my computer (Windows XP Pro) due to a problem.
I reinstalled all my videos on it, which are visible on the computer and work fine.
However, when I connect the DANE ELEC to my TV, the font for my folders and files has changed. It's not the same font visible on my computer. (For example: on my computer, I have the folder named "Comedy Films" and on the TV, it becomes "FILMSC~1".
Additionally, in my folders, I cannot see all the videos that are present. Nevertheless, the ones that are visible on the TV work.
What should I do to make everything work again? Did I erase important files during the formatting?
Some people are telling me to update....
Should I keep this DANE ELEC as a simple removable hard drive....
Thank you in advance...

Here we go!
So, I just restored my blunder (NTFS to FAT32) quite easily.
Big shout out to DANE-ELEC for this "SO SPEAKY" because I find it UNACCEPTABLE that it is not possible to transfer files larger than 4.5 GB when this drive is HDMI! So it's impossible to consider transferring a 1080p movie, for example (more than 8 GB!)
I offer you a small step-by-step guide for beginners who made the mistake of converting their So Speaky to NTFS (a perfectly legitimate error, once again!):
1. Backup the entire hard drive by copying its contents to another hard drive (formatting from NTFS to FAT32 will permanently erase all data);
2. To identify the correct firmware for your SO SPEAKY and BEFORE formatting, connect the SO SPEAKY to your TV (the menu should still be accessible even in NTFS). Press the >>| button then the >> on the SO SPEAKY remote (one after the other).
The firmware version will appear at the bottom of your TV screen. If the displayed reference contains the term 64M, you will need to use firmware V3.51_I; if the displayed reference contains the term 128M, you will need to use firmware v3.51_H.
3. Download the correct firmware HERE: http://www.danedigital.com/HDD/so_speaky_fr.html
4. Download "FAT32 Formatter": http://tokiwa.qee.jp/EN/Fat32Formatter/index.html
5. Start formatting and wait about an hour for the So Speaky 1TB (for me the program slightly bugged (froze), but it continued the formatting anyway).
6. After formatting, check that the HDD has changed to FAT32 and copy the firmware to the root and follow the next procedure:
6.1 Copy the MP35.ROM file to the So Speaky hard drive via your PC
6.2 Then disconnect your So Speaky from the PC and connect it to the television
6.3 Go to the file menu by pressing the "enter" button on your remote.
6.4 The flashing sequence starts automatically
(the operation lasts about 20 seconds, during which you must not turn off the device!).
6.5 The screen goes black, then turn off the So Speaky, then turn it back on (Caution! If you accidentally
pressed a button and the update resumes, do not turn off your drive! This could damage it.
Let the update finish by starting from step 4 again, don’t forget to delete the MP35.ROM file from your PC!)
6.6 The firmware is installed
WARNING: do not forget to delete the MP35.ROM file from the drive or the card after the flashing operation!
YOUR SO SPEAKY SHOULD THEN BE OPERATIONAL AGAIN
GOOD LUCK!

Hi, I have the same problem as you. Once on my TV, it doesn't show all the movies on the hard drive, plus I also have the ~1 inscription.
Did you manage to solve this problem?

Once formatted, it's a mess!! You need to revert to the FAT32 system to be able to use it on the TV
the only solution is to create a magical partition, good luck!!
indeed, there's a problem with the Dane-Elec: it only supports file transfers of less than 4 and a half gigabytes.

In fact, the Dane Elec menu no longer works once formatted on the TV.
So in order for it to function correctly, it needs to be kept in FAT32 format.
To return to this mode, magical partitions need to be created.

Hi,
Thank you so much for your response, I hope I can make up for it! My email address is johnstephmanon@hotmail.com
If you can explain to me clearly the steps to follow because I know a bit, but not well enough to solve this on my own... please explain step by step if it’s possible for you! Without overdoing it, of course!
A big thank you because the after-sales service of Dane Elec is nowhere to be found!
Thanks
John

Hi, I have the same problem! I formatted it and there's nothing on my TV anymore. Can I give you my email address so you can help me too if you don’t mind (niliv@hotmail.fr)? Thank you in advance.
Hi,
I did manage to catch up.
In fact, when you format, you delete the "Fat32". To get it back up and running on your Dane Elec, you really need to use the "partition magic" program to restore it to its original state. Needless to say, I tried, but in the end, I had to rely on a friend who's much better than I am at computers to get it done. I can't say much more... I'm sorry, but apparently, with a bit of patience, anyone can do it... (refer to my buddy)
Otherwise, ask Ced, he had sent me an attachment via my email that really helped us.
See you later, John

Hello everyone, I had the same problem as most of you. I made the big mistake of formatting my HD multimedia dane elec HDMI so speaky multimedia 500 Go to NFTS format and lost its multimedia function. However, I managed to recover it, here’s how I did it:
- Download the Swissknife software https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/utilitaires/21453-swissknife/
- Empty your hard drive
- Format it using Swissknife in FAT 32 mode
- Download the RIGHT update for your hard drive http://www.danedigital.com/HDD/so_speaky_fr.html
- Unzip it and follow the help file provided (copy the MP.... file to your hard drive, disconnect from the PC, and connect it to your TV. Start the update and once the screen goes black, turn off and turn on the hard drive. If the update restarts, let it execute, then turn off and turn on again. Once the update is finished, reconnect the hard drive to the PC. Delete the update file from both the hard drive and the PC.)
- You just have to put your files back on your hard drive
That's how I proceeded; I don't know if it will work for all of you, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Good luck to you all!

Hi, can you help me because I'm really struggling right now!!! No matter which firmware I put in, it doesn't work properly; on one of the firmwares, the words are not written correctly, and on the other, the videos cannot be played, it just shows static. I just tried again with one of the firmwares (v_3_51_i), and this time, the words are written correctly, but I can't go back (meaning when I press the left arrow on the remote, I can't return to the previous folder).
Did you do everything that needed to be done before updating (formatting to FAT32, etc.)? Did you try all the suggested updates? Because personally, the update planned for my firmware version did not solve my problem... I had to do the other update meant for the other firmware version! Otherwise, I understood that there might be a new update available on the "dane-elec" website... you can try that too.
Thank you for your response. Otherwise, I tried all the updates, but each time something went wrong (snow when I watch a video or misspelled words, but not all, and above all it is slower to display the folders) but with the version I installed, I can read my files, although sometimes they are poorly written.
Hi, I followed the different operations to be able to use my multimedia hard drive, but nothing happens.
The firmware is compressed. What should I do?

I was lucky enough to have a peace of mind warranty, so I sent the hard drives to Cdiscount, and they refunded me for my hard drive because I couldn't resolve the issue. As a result, I have a 1TB hard drive instead of a 500GB one, which is awesome!
Hello everyone,
The DanElec hard drive operates in two completely independent modes: on one hand, the PC hard drive mode, which works with any type of formatting, either FAT (File Allocation Table) or NTFS mode. The computer's operating system manages both modes, so there are no issues storing your favorite media. I want to draw attention to the fact that your drive formatted in FAT mode cannot support media larger than 4GB due to the FAT standard. In NTFS mode, it is possible to store media larger than 4GB.
As for the TV mode, it can only function in FAT mode in order to be compatible with the software managing multimedia from your television. Therefore, it will not be possible to use it with media exceeding 4GB in both modes.
Sometimes the buffer of the hard drive in TV mode can get saturated due to transferring videos from your PC. This has occasionally resulted (it happened to me) in the drive in TV mode becoming unusable.
My advice (and I want to emphasize that this is just my opinion) is to use the latest firmware for your drive (check the DanElec website to download the latest version).
If your hard drive freezes in TV mode, I also recommend making a copy of the contents to your PC to avoid losing any data, and then reformatting it to FAT mode (Google being your friend, I suggest you look up a procedure for this type of formatting). Once this formatting is done, reconnect the multimedia drive to your television and check its proper functioning. This should get it back in working order.
Once this step is completed, consider updating to the latest firmware; again, the procedure is easily found online. Once the firmware is updated, you can re-import your favorite media.
I hope this helps you enjoy your multimedia drive.
Regards,
LP1810

Hello,
I've followed the instructions to the letter (except for the formatting, I used g-parted) the problem is that after formatting to FAT32 there's no way to get the menu on the TV! (black screen) so I can't launch the .ROM of the firmware or see its version! Is there any way to start this installation without going through TV mode?
Otherwise, I'm trying to format it with Fat32Formatter but the operation is excessively long with this program especially since I have the 1TB model!
And last question for the SO SPEAKY HDMI 1TB do I need to use firmware I or H? (since I can't access the menu)
Thank you in advance for your responses on behalf of my emerging baldness!

Fat32Formatter took about 10 hours to format the drive which was completely empty, and it didn’t change anything at all! My drive is in Fat32 (yay) but the TV screen remains stubbornly black! How did you manage to start the firmware installation without having any access to the menu on the TV? Personally, I’m going crazy with this story. DANE ELEC can forget about me buying from them in the future!
The formatting duration is long... it's true!!! I made a mistake last time since the firmware didn't allow me to recover the on-screen menu but instead enabled me to read media correctly because before that, the DDM read movies, music, and photos very poorly (or not at all). From the moment I formatted it to FAT32, the menu came back on the screen for me. If the problem persists, try contacting the retailer or visit the Dane-elec website for more information.
Hi
I have the same problem as Mr. Nyco, when I connect the hard drive to the TV, the main screen does not display (I must connect the hard drive to the TV using normal video cables or HDMI but there is no video signal with either!!!) so there is no way to access the menu and it's not possible to run the MP35.ROM file. Is there any way to recover my disk? Can you help me? Thank you all, and if someone wants to inform me, please contact jojoflori@hotmail.com

I just bought a DANE ELEC SPEAKI HDMI 500GB hard drive;
I noticed upon purchase that the drive was formatted in FAT32  so logically to store all my HD movie list
I had to format it in NTFS.... :pt1cable:
I completely forgot to back up the files present on the original hard drive just in case... :(
At the first launch of the DDM on the TV, no image via HDMI :??:
and also for the composite !!!!!!
I tried everything... reformatting the DDM in FAT32 with several programs but no change
the TV & DDM connection does not work (black screen)
So basically I have never seen the menu or anything else to be able to put the FIRMWARE H or I... .§ !!!!
In my opinion, the only solution is to find the ROOT files that are present on the original DDM
and then copy them hoping that the menu restarts on the TV.
Is there a generous soul who could put these 5 little files in a RAR folder zip or whatever you want??? PLEEEEEEASE
This is tough, I need to find a solution!

Hello,
I formatted my external hard drive to NTFS at the request of my computer, so I lost all my data because it wouldn't open until I formatted it.
However, after that, it doesn't work on my TV anymore.
So after several forums, I wanted to switch it back to FAT32, which I did, but my computer is asking me to format it again (either to NTFS), and it won't open it!
What should I do???
Have you experienced the same thing?

Hello, could you please help me? I am looking for a ghost (clone) of the original partitions and the original files that were included with the purchase of this disk (Dane-Elec So-Speacky 500 HDMI 4 in 1 OTB).
The problem is that my brother has completely formatted the disk, so there are no original partitions left. I have tried formatting it again, but there is no display on the TV regardless of the possible modes, so it's impossible to get a display and update the firmware.
Best regards.

Just to say that I had the same problem as you, and I followed the same steps as "nfranq" and my HDD is working normally again. However, there is a small difference: on "fat32 formatter", it's possible to do a quick format, just like in Windows; you just need to check the box, and it only takes a few seconds (for a 500G).
Cheers
Well, I did the same thing as Franck... the problem is that I lose HDMI in my connections (replaced by VGA) and I can't watch a movie... I have large white and black bars as if I was missing video drivers to play them...
Does anyone have an idea for me please?
I've already tried to format it using "fat32formatter" and then I installed the update "v3_51_H_Firmware_SO_SPEAKY" because my firmware was verified and it is indeed 128Mb, but my problem is still not resolved.
The menu on the TV still sometimes displays pixel bars and no files are working (avi, mp3, jpg...).
With movies, I get snow on the screen or colored screens, but photos are distorted or also show colored screens and the music only produces hissing sounds.
I also registered my DDM purchased from Dane-Elec and tried to contact Dane-Elec, but still no response.
Please... if anyone can help me, that would be super nice.
Thanks in advance!
After searching for weeks, formatting my drive countless times, and updating my menu repeatedly... I finally ended up trying to install the "V3.51I" update that wasn't intended for me because my firmware is 128Mb, and all my files finally work on my television!!! So cool! There you go... if this can help someone! Thanks anyway!
