To start, go to "Run" and type "services.msc"
you will find yourself in the services manager and there locate:

    "VAIO Event Service"

    Right-click and select "Start"

The problem is solved (at least for me...;)

To ensure it "remains" upon startup, right-click and choose "Properties" and under "Startup type" select "Automatic".

    Hello,

I finally found the problem!! At least for me it works.
    I have a Vaio VGN-FS315M.

You go to vaio.sony.fr then support then download the utilities zip file and install it in the following order:

    1 Sony Utilities (Folder 1)
2 Sony Shared Library (Folder 2)
3 Vaio Event Service (Folder 6)

When you are asked to restart you restart... For Folder 2, this will be the case...
Normally when your computer starts up again (after installing Folder 2) it works again, if not we continue by installing Folder 6.

If it still doesn't work, WE DO THE STEP ALL OVER AGAIN, SOME USERS HAVE TO TRY 3 TIMES FOR IT TO WORK

<underline>Here is the original version of the explanation in English:

Your model doesn’t have the Utils.exe utility. Instead you need to download the pre-installed utilities for your model and then install the following in this order:

    1 Sony Utilities (Folder 1)
2 Sony Shared Library (Folder 2)
3 Vaio Event Service (Folder 6)

Then re-boot. You may find that you need to repeat this more than once…

If, after installing the utilities, followed by a reboot, the FN keys are still not working then repeat the install procedure (in the stated order) and then again restart your computer.

It has been reported by several members that this procedure (up to three times) may be necessary before the Fn keys work correctly.

Edit: No, an un-install is not necessary.

      Thank you very much

It works for a Vaio VGN-S3XP as soon as folder 6 is installed.

      Hello,
When I try to install "sony utilities", I get an error message stating that it is already installed. Then when I install "sony shared library", an error message interrupts the installation indicating that sony shared library is not installed on my PC (even though that's what I'm trying to do...). And finally for the last step "vaio event service", I get yet another error message... So my Fn key still doesn't work!!! WHAT SHOULD I DO???? PLEASE HELP ME!!

I also have the same problem with a VGN-FS315M. In a panic, I installed everything I could find at:
    http://support.vaio.sony.fr/downloads/select/select.asp?site=voe_fr_FR_cons

Both the Drivers and the "FS3_Utils", and curiously, once I installed everything in "FS3_Utils", the Fn key worked and I was able to adjust my brightness. However, after restarting, it no longer works (even though no updates were performed when closing XP).

Does this behavior ring a bell for anyone?

Yes Hosckar, the wisest thing is to use the original CD, except that they have to be found and in the case of a change of ownership... it's not fun :)

      M4s5e,

It’s normal, there is a service to set to automatic startup: right-click on "My Computer," then manage, then "Services and Applications," then "Services," and finally look for "HID Input Service" and set it to automatic startup if it’s not already done. Then start the service and it should work.

Pierre's response is correct. I had this Fn key issue with a Sony Vaio FS415M and now it's resolved. You have to repeat the manipulation several times and then, miracle, it works. Thank you very much for your help, Pierre.
So you need to download Sony Utilities, install folder 1, then 2, then 6. REPEAT the manipulation two or three times if necessary and it works afterwards.

It's normal, you had to install the OS that came with the PC.
    The drivers are included.

    Hello,
I'm Thidj! and I can help you, having had the same problem a few years ago with my brave Vaio PCG-K33Q.
The story is that I wanted to minimize the use of processes in Windows and I therefore closed the one named Hotkey.exe, I think.... anyway, the FN key on a Vaio is the Hotkey process. If you were able to do it even after restarting the computer, then you should search for 'Hotkey download' on a driver site or even on Google. You'll find it quickly.

    Hello everyone

I have a problem with my Vaio VGN-FS215E:
It seems that the fn key is stuck: I no longer need to press "Fn" to increase or decrease the volume, brightness... And consequently, the keys associated with Fn only respond to Fn functions. For example: I can no longer use the "delete" key. Moreover, I can't navigate as before with the left and right arrow keys: on a folder list, I jump from the first to the last... The same goes for text; I no longer go letter by letter but from the beginning to the end of paragraphs...

Has anyone had this kind of issue and a solution?? I'm starting to go crazy...

    Thanks in advance!

Hello, I saw on a forum that you had a Vaio FS215E
I have a VGNFS215M and I have a CD problem. Would you have the original drivers for complete reinstallation of the PC?
I burned them and have a total of 9 CDs (4 installation and 5 applications)
The big problem is that my CD 2 installation is damaged and I cannot reinstall my Vaio. So I can't do anything with it because I don't have the drivers. Additionally, since the procedure started, I have nothing left on my PC.
I have a nicely formatted PC that is of no use (except as a paperweight of course. lol)

If you have the CDs could you make me a copy and I would reimburse you for the CDs and shipping costs. It seems that Sony charges 70 euros for the CDs. I find that outrageous but oh well

Thank you in advance for your response
      Best regards...

    Hello everyone,
I have an issue with the fn key on my Dell Latitude CSX laptop, it's a PIII with a QWERTY keyboard.
To use the blue symbols, you had to hold the fn key beforehand. Now, it's the opposite. When you press the key directly, the numeric value appears. Normally, the alphabetical character should display. I don't know if it's a driver or system problem.
    Please, help me.

Same for me, same problem on a Sony Vaio PCG-415MP. However, I am an IT technician and I recovered all the registry keys related to this damn Sony Hotkey utility from another Vaio where it works. The worst part is that even with the files from that other PC and the registry keys, I can't get it to work, and I have the same issue with another utility regarding the jogdial for which I've used two versions and still nothing works!
In desperation, I called Sony to get the installation CDs that I don't have, and they asked me for more than €70!!!
Needless to say, I told them to go take a hike...

      Same for my VAIO FS315M...
It worked when I bought my PC (December) until a few days ago... (I'm even wondering if it's not related to the automatic VAIO update that was done recently)

    Hi,
If you have the installation CDs or the partition for your VAIO, reinstall the original system after making a backup, and everything will work.
As for Fox, I’m not sure I understand your problem, but make sure you are in the same language across all software, as you can choose different keyboard languages depending on the software.

Does anyone have an idea why Sony is messing around with these damn keys?
I have an NR11S and under Linux, it's a real hassle to make them work, if we even manage to do it.
I mean, it's great to make beautiful, powerful, high-end laptops, but this key issue is driving me crazy.

you have Win XP service pack 2:
      you need to install:

      1) sony Util (dell files)
      2) Install the Hotkey drivers
and find the drivers in the folder SONYUTILS_HOTKEY_10_ENG / or Fr
      and it will work

For the Sony Vaio, it is essential to obtain the original driver utilities found on the official website,
    http://support.vaio.sony.fr/downloads/updates/updates.asp?site=voe_fr_FR_cons&c=0&s=VGN-A&m=1804
you will see everything is there, uh it took me 2 minutes to solve the problem with the Fn key personally..
a special Vaio software needs to be installed and without any hassle, thanks to this software you will be able to configure absolutely everything, don't forget that you own a Vaio they thought of everything.

To ensure that the display of the FN key functions remains valid, do not disable: "KSERV (hotkey sony)" in the startup table. That is to say:
do: run .. execute .. msconfig .. startup and in the list of programs that are enabled at startup leave KSERV checked and maybe also ISBMGR. I used to uncheck that so there you go!!! @+

Hello, I have the same problem and I don't know much about it. I have a Vaio and none of my Fn keys work anymore. When I go to start and type, it writes in QWERTY, but in Google, it writes in AZERTY. I don't understand anything anymore, please help me, thank you. Oh, and my cursor often gets stuck.

Sorry, the model is the VPCCA3E1E. Could you please help me? When I go to the site, I can't find the model; I only find the VPCCA3E1E/L or VPCCA3E1E/W.
