Disable Ethernet network card at startup

Solved

Hello,
I would like to remove the "Network cable unplugged" icon corresponding to my ethernet card (I am on Wi-Fi).
I have already disabled it in device management but no matter what, it reappears at each startup.
Any idea?
Thank you
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 2.0.0.16

You need to disable your Ethernet controller (network card) in the motherboard BIOS.

Alright, you need to enter the BIOS:
restart, and press Delete or Del or F1 (depending on the PC) to enter the BIOS at the moment the PC starts (display of memory, detected hard drives...)
once in the BIOS, look through the various menus for a reference to Ethernet or LAN and there you disable (Disabled) the controller (the menus differ depending on the BIOS, the PCs, etc...), exit the BIOS saving the changes, and once restarted, you should no longer have the icon.
But I specify that this operation is reserved for relatively experienced users... you can refer to your motherboard documentation (if you have it), if you have any doubts once in the BIOS, note the options proposed, and exit without making any changes, and post a message again, we will consider...

Hi
right-click on the icon, damn I don't have XP anymore... but there’s an option that opens a window... maybe properties, and there you have the display options for the connection status

Apart from displaying network connections, there's nothing on the display.
In settings, there’s the option to show the icon in the notification area, but that’s disabled.

otherwise you display your network connections, right-click on Ethernet and disable it

thank you stéphbass I have already done all that and it doesn't change anything.

However, for disabling the controller in the BIOS I don't know how to do it (if indeed that corresponds to disabling the card via properties of My Computer I have already done that as well)

and via the device manager
right-click on "My Computer"/"Properties"/"Hardware" tab/"Device Manager" in the network section you should have your Ethernet/double-click and disable the driver

I want to activate the Ethernet driver, but it does not appear in the device manager.

Oh yes, that's radical! But given your warning message and not really wanting to mess with the BIOS, I'm not going to venture into that...
It's stupid, I thought there was just something to check/uncheck somewhere, but oh well, it's just an icon.
In any case, thank you all for your help.

Normally yes, as indicated in my first post, it should offer you 2 options.
Or right-click on start/properties and there you have an option for the icons in the taskbar

The option in properties actually just hides it.
Since this cable is unplugged, I don't have the 2 options you're talking about. I only have:
- modify firewall settings
- open network connections
I don't have anything with Display

It's clear that if I disable the card, it disappears, but upon restart, the icon comes back.

I'm not going to push too hard, but for me, the only solution to your problem is to go through the BIOS.
Unless your network card is a PCI card (not integrated into the motherboard), in which case, you just need to remove it from the PC...

I no longer have XP, I can't help you more
when I had a XP PC connected to Wi-Fi, I managed to remove that logo... through the connection properties by disabling it via the network manager

ok ok thanks anyway
I'll try for the bios, I have no doubt about the effectiveness of this tweak but it's true that I don't really like to venture into this part of computing.
thank you all

Just a question, William.
By doing this manipulation, does it uninstall or just disable the card? Because I wouldn't want to be bothered later if I need an Ethernet connection.

I just tested Stéphane's solution, which indeed works well on my PC: Open network connections, right-click on the local area connection, disable (and not uninstall). And upon restarting, it doesn't show me the disconnected network cable icon... it's surprising that it doesn't work for you.

As for the modification in the BIOS, it only disables the hardware management of the network card integrated into your motherboard (in the Integrated Peripherals menu, Onboard Controller LAN set to Disabled), you can always go back by changing the option back to Enabled if you need to plug in a network cable...

I'm back!
So I decided to go through the BIOS, but HIC! I have no idea where to go.
I've noted the options that appear:
- Information: BIOS version...
- Main: date, time....
- Advanced: Infrared port, ASF information
- Security: password
- Boot: 1) IDE0
2) IDE1
3) CD/DVD
4) PCI LAN: network boot
5) USB HDD
6) USB HDD
7) USB key
8) USB CD/DVD rom
Logically, I went to 4, but there I can't do anything
Does anyone know what I need to do to disable this card?
Thanks

I know that this solution works...normally (I did it on my other PC and there's no icon), but here nothing works; it reactivates every time I start up (I even tried disabling the 1394 connection, but it doesn't change anything).

Okay for the BIOS, I wanted to know if it's reversible.

Problem solved! It was due to the Acer eLauncher where an option needs to be checked/unchecked.
