Hello,
I suddenly have a problem with the Numbers application provided in iLife.
For the past two months, I have been developing a professional file using this application, too happy to be free from the austere Excel.
Today, I try to reopen this file, and to my surprise, this message appears: "the *.numbers file is not valid. The index.xml file is missing."
This is a small catastrophe for me because I am losing important data that, of course, I didn’t bother to back up elsewhere or even print.
Can someone please come to my rescue?

Hello,
Numbers closed, try throwing away the preference file: com.apple.numbers.plist, which is located in the Preferences folder of your user library, just in case.
A little permission repair might also fix things.

I just did some research and tests to try to help you.
But unfortunately, it doesn’t look good. I found the location of that famous index.xml file. It is located inside the "package" that the saved file constitutes. For example, "my accounts.numbers", if I right-click on it, I can go to "Show Package Contents", and then I see the file "index.xml.gz"
When I delete this file and then try to open it with Numbers, I get the same message as you, or almost “the system doesn’t tell me that the file is missing, but that it is absent, which comes to the same thing, basically.
So, I did a test by putting an xml file from another file in there, and the result is that the file opens, but it shows the content of the file from which the index.xml file was extracted. Conclusion, this index.xml file is actually the exact content of the Numbers file.
However, this index.xml file cannot "disappear" by itself, and that is the mystery in your case. If by mistake, you "opened" the package contents of your .numbers file and then moved the index.xml file, you might try to put it back in its place, otherwise...
First, try to see if this file is present in your package, if yes, then right-click on it and click "open with", then choose Numbers...

Click on the file that refuses to open
In the "action" menu (gear icon) choose
SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS
In my case, the index.xml file was identified as follows:
index- new.xml
I duplicated this file to keep it, then renamed the duplicated file index.xml since that's the file the computer was looking for.
I then double-clicked on the file that was refusing to open and ... it works!

At my place, this file is indeed called 'index.xml.gz', and I don't understand how it could have "come out" by itself from your package - the file itself, in fact. And at my place, replacing it with another file of the same name doesn't work. As I mentioned earlier, if I do this manipulation, I get the content of the file from which the index file is extracted, not the expected content.
It could very well be a mistake on your part. So, one suggestion, in case you mistakenly deleted it,
try a data recovery software and have it search for this famous file.
You can also temporarily ask the Finder to show all invisible files, in case you made this file invisible by placing a dot in front of the name.

However, I found three different files named com.apple.iWork.plist ... followed by numbers. I wonder if recent updates might be related to the disappearance of my index.xml file.
