There is a small reset hole under your Archos, push a paperclip into it for 15 seconds and you're good to go.
Here’s how to solve the Recovery problem (code 4) for an Archos 504.
Download the free software SwissKnife V3 to format the hard drive of your Archos.
Then format the hard drive to FAT32.
Next, copy and paste the file a504.aos of 17,638 Ko provided by the Archos website onto the hard drive
of your Archos.
Miracle.....it works!
Then copy and paste the different folders (Data, Info, Music, Pictures, Playlists, System, and Video) and
files (DevIcon.fil, DevLogo.fil, and idx.tmp), which you have of course previously backed up to a HDD or
another storage device.
