Hello,
I have a problem with Quark XPress version 6. I can't open any documents anymore.
Message "the application preferences file is damaged. Please remove it and relaunch Quark XPress."
I went to Library, Preferences Quark. I moved XPress preferences.prf to the trash. I turned it off and back on with the button to reset. No success.
I may not have understood the message in English correctly?
Could someone please help me solve this issue?

For Vista and Xpress 7. Go to Control Panel / Classic View / Folder Options / View / check Show hidden files and folders.
Then in User / Appdata / Local / Quark / QuarkXpress 7 / rename the file "XpressPreferences.prf" to: "oldXpressPreferences.prf"
Restart, then relaunch Xpress and open your file.

Thank you, Ben. My problem was solved, but I still noted the procedure.
On PC (but it's the same on Mac except I don't know the path by heart), you need to remove the preferences in:
C:\Documents and Settings\"User Name"\Application Data\Quark\QuarkXPress 6.0
I delete all files with the *.prf extension, then restart, and it should work (it was the same with all the versions of XPress I've known, Mac or PC)

I followed the instructions received:
"In Library
Preferences Quark
Put the folder "XPress preferences.prf" in the trash
RESTART: turn off-restart with the button, it resets everything".
However, after restarting, the folder "XPress preferences.prf" did not "reappear" in Preferences.
So I "fished it out" of the trash and put it back in Preferences and then I randomly tried it and it worked.

To "wrap up" the subject, I would say that there's rarely just one method in IT/office work, the main thing is that it works! :-)
I loved "zouzou's" conclusion: (So I "rescued" it from the trash and put it back in Preferences and then I randomly tried it and it worked.)
For me, XPress automatically regenerates the preferences (and thus the *.prf), so "in theory", there's no need to rescue anything from the trash (besides, rather than rescuing from the trash, it's better to save IN ADVANCE in a folder, rename, etc... etc... but well, that's yet another topic) But in any case, the important thing is to "fiddle around" and figure it out yourself, whatever the method ;-)

Hello,
I've been having this issue with XPress 7 for a while now, but on Vista. I would like to delete the Xpress Preferences file, but the path does not seem to be the same as on XP! I don't have a "Documents and Settings" folder, which I'm familiar with on XP... And when I search for *.prf files on C:, it returns nothing.
If you know the correct path...thanks in advance, I've been struggling with this for days. I HATE Vista!! My Xpress works perfectly on my PC that still has XP, but on the laptop, it's a total nightmare!

Well, I finally managed to do everything properly, to find the right folders, to delete the Preferences folder and then put it back... But it has changed absolutely nothing!! So sure, it's for XPress 7.3 and not 6, but still..! I can't take it anymore.....!!!!
Let me remind you of the 2 error messages I get when opening XPress:
- This version of XPress Preferences is incompatible with this version of QuarkXPress
- Cannot access the "XPress Preferences file [12]
That's it... Am I going to hang myself or what??
