Hello,
I installed a new cartridge in my HP PHOTOSMART C4280 printer and it keeps telling me that it is improperly installed, damaged, or missing. I checked with a lamp and noticed there was some ink on the contacts. Please help me. Thank you in advance.

Hello
another solution that worked for me
enter the printer's BIOS (see above)
- select "Information Menu"
- then "Checksum for reload data"
- confirm with the green button, a number will display
- finally, press Cancel (the red cross) three times
the printer prints an alignment sheet and the error message appears again. Repeat the operation in the printer's BIOS. And no more error message for me! I hope it will be the same for you :)

Thank you very much, it works! :D
Hello everyone
.I managed to get rid of the error message
(Damaged or missing cartridge on 4280)
The printer is printing normally again, so it can be fixed, but I don't know how I did it lol .
In any case, I went through the X (Cancel) and Power buttons at the same time.
This displayed on the printer screen Enter special Key anyway : The code is Blue, green, gray. Then we ended up in (let's say) the printer's BIOS. There I messed around a bit with everything XD. One thing is for sure, I didn't reset it, but I printed in mode (print "something I don't remember") I printed 6 times some Chinese that looks like Japanese XD (Basically nothing readable even for a Chinese person) I thought it wouldn't work at all, it was dead. Well no, I exited from that and I made a black and white copy and another in color the black and white one was terrible but the colored one was pretty much perfect I made another black and white on the back and to my great surprise it started working normally again. (In any case, this manipulation unblocked the printer and we can once again use the scanner for those who have cartridges, let me know. In any case, I can certify that it worked for me even though I rubbed the print head of the cartridge with paper towel)

I think the best thing is for you to take advantage of it to finish using it and then switch back to a regular cartridge which seems much less defective at first glance (and cheaper). By the way, I noticed that the color didn't have these kinds of problems :) Am I the only one in this case?
Perhaps the ideal would be to use an XL cartridge for color and a regular one for black.

My XL cartridge is finally working
I went into the BIOS (pressing the X button + the on/off button at the same time) and then entered the Blue-Green-Grey code
Then, using the blue button, I navigated to the reports menu. I confirmed by pressing GREEN 2 or 3 times (until the "selftest" was confirmed). After this test, I closed all the menus with the X button and now the cartridge is accepted.

Press the X + Power buttons (simultaneously). ??
Which shows on the screen: Enter special Key.
The code is: Blue button then Green then Gray.
You enter the printer's BIOS.
Press the Gray and Blue buttons for options and the Green button to confirm
Find the option "Semi-Reset" and confirm. The printer will reset.
Perform a test print and everything should (again) work!

I did your manipulation. For me, it's "semi full reset" that I find closest in the BIOS. After that, the printer turns off. I turn it back on, it makes a terrible noise, it asks me for the language and region again, and once I've validated everything, the message reappears.
I went back to the menu, I did a test page which came out correctly, everything was fine for about 30 seconds and the message reappeared... I'm losing hope. I ordered new cartridges (the old ones being still 75% full), but I have little hope...

Hi Shina,
unplug all the connectors from the printer and try to print the test page manually "you can find that in the printer's manual". If it works, then the printer is in good condition, so the problem is probably the installation. Reinstall it.

I had the same problem and HP directed me to this page:

I saw it only after I fixed my printer with the help of one of the comments from this forum.

Good evening
I accessed the printer's BIOS as described above but couldn't find the reset mode. After a few minutes of frustration and some restarts, I found myself stuck without being able to enter the code. I opened the door and the printer turned off by itself; I then turned it back on and everything was fine...
go figure why!!

There is another option to modify through the menus in the printer's BIOS, which is the alignment test that must be set to OFF; otherwise, after performing the "Checksum for relock," the printer will systematically perform an alignment test, which is cumbersome and prints unnecessarily, and the error may appear right after. So remember to disable this test in
{ bypass pen alignment } green button {press OK to ... } green button

It's been over 15 days since I haven't let them go (HP)
Look on your cartridge, the expiration date is engraved on it
2010/08/31 for me.
If you kept your packaging (always keep it during the "warranty"
AUG 2010 for me --> august = août.
I've called the HP hotline 10/15 times, and they never call you back.
A letter of 11 pages with a copy of forums regarding defects of the affected HP cartridges, sent to an address that HP finally gave me.
They ask for a copy of the purchase invoice, the age of your grandmother, if you wear size 42..... I'm joking but it's like that!!!
They make you wait until you give up. Same goes for the seller, who is responsible for hidden defects (art. 1641 and following of the civil code), even beyond the warranty period.
A woman from HP called me yesterday to say that she was sending me a new cartridge. I didn't believe it anymore. As soon as I receive the cartridge (if it arrives one day?), I'll give you all the details so that your request can succeed.

HELLO
I changed my black cartridge on HP C4280 because it indicated a missing or damaged cartridge, and after the change, the message continues and the printer still doesn't work. I've cleaned it, uninstalled it,
reinstalled it, and it still doesn't work. I suppose it is beyond repair, which I hope it isn't, but I don't know what else to do and it's only a year old.
Thank you in advance.

It's really crap Photosmart 4280 because of the cartridge I can't do anything now!! It shows cartridge missing or damaged and it's stuck?? Do not buy it.
Hello everyone, I would also like to warn you that the problem also exists on the C4580 model, and this is my second printer experiencing this issue. HP is very good and very expensive when it works, but as soon as it starts to malfunction, that’s when you can throw it in the trash. As for me, I will change brand.
I just changed the black cartridge (which wasn't empty!), and the printer is working normally again.
Thank you for your help.
Thank you for your help.
Don't buy HP anymore. They have procedures that drag things out and charge you 20 euros just to talk to you. Yuck!
Hello,
If the process you undertook has led to this result, it's because you must have made a mistake, as I myself contacted HP support via email regarding a recurrence of the problem with the same black cartridge 350XL. (After 4 or 5 emails, which took about 4 days because they are a bit slow to respond)
Not only did they send me a Black 350XL Cartridge, but I also did not incur any costs for either shipping or the product itself.
In conclusion, perhaps it is necessary to learn to describe the problem more precisely
and to provide the information they request. Then, show some appreciation towards the person you are communicating with (Politeness doesn’t hurt)...
For those who understand. Best regards.

No miracle, no consideration for the customer:
here is the response I just received from the RUE DU COMMERCE store that sold me this defective cartridge.

Dear customer,
Thank you for your message.
Your ink cartridge is no longer under warranty.
To ensure that your difficulties are not due to your printer, I recommend purchasing a generic cartridge to test its functionality.
I wish you a very nice day and remain at your complete disposal.

Hi Oscour 80,
I have the same issue as you. I bought a 350xl cartridge from internity.fr and I've used it for barely a month (the cartridge is 75% full). Since the cartridge was purchased in March, it's no longer under warranty with internity (3-month warranty). So here I am needing to print invitations. I contacted HP's customer service for complaints, but they've been calling me for two days to ask for the serial number of my printer (a Photosmart C4280), and none of the numbers on any of the papers I have seem to work!!!!! The problem is that without a number, they won't open a case for me!!!! It drives me up the wall; you think you're buying quality, and in the end, you might have to throw away a cartridge that costs €30!!!! They're not legit!!!
Here's a pretty good link from the official HP forum
(I hope your problem gets resolved; as for me, I guess I’ll just have to buy another cartridge :@ )
See you soon
