Hello,
I have a problem with a friend's external hard drive... a very recent WD 500GB...
So, according to what he told me (I believe him because I've seen other unresolved posts that fit the problem well):
he started his PC one evening, and the scandisk utility started at boot, so he ran it:
but after a little while, he realized that many folders on this hard drive had turned into files without extensions, for example: the folder "musique prod perso" became musique prod perso without an extension, making it impossible to open it...
so I thought, how clever of me, I'll just do "open with" + explorer.exe, but the window closes and reappears at the software selection screen... so that doesn't work at all...
Another point, when I check the properties of the drive, it recognizes the exact amount of GB inside, so the files contained in those corrupted folders are not deleted... however, when I check manually (properties) folder by folder, I find only a total of 70 GB (out of 270)
The folders in question appear as files without extensions of 32KB...
Second IMPORTANT point, last night (on Vista) I did "properties/tools/error checking" with both options checked, so it took longer, with recovery of bad sectors or something like that...
It lasted all night, and this morning I see something like: "files have been recovered and placed in "lost" folders, etc., etc., I thought the problem was resolved but no...
I did indeed notice that all the files had returned, but in "FOUND000, FOUND001..." folders containing .CHK files of different sizes that roughly correspond to movie or music files, I believe the largest must be 300 MB, so really strange.
I attempted a file recovery with a very professional software that was lent to me, but just the disk analysis caused the software to crash, GREAT!!!
I am trying again with PC Inspector File Recovery, but I think it will just bring back old deleted files (I'm talking about other files deleted before the .chk problem) that are unrecoverable...
I also looked into a "chk file recovery" program, I am going to test it but I don’t think it runs on Vista...
SO, IF ANYONE HAS EVER HAD THIS PROBLEM OR CAN HELP ME IN ANY WAY, that would be amazing!
THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE POSTED THIS PROBLEM WITHOUT ANY RESPONSE, SO PLEASE HELP ME!!!

since I put some folders on a USB key, they have turned into files! and when I double click on them, "open with..." opens up

Ah, I had exactly the same problem, exactly the same, Windows error checking under Vista, and it completely erased my image folder (2GB nonetheless) and made my album folder unusable, which contained 35GB of music....
I have a file with no extension weighing only 32KB but when I click on it once to highlight it, it shows a CD cover of one of my songs....
I managed to run Get DataBack on my other PC, which is equipped with Windows XP, and after a whole night of scanning, it nearly recovered all the files, but it crashed after transferring not even 120MB of music....
Any solutions? Thanks in advance.-
I have the same problem .. my 1000 GB hard drive has suffered a little trauma because I think I overfilled it .. I had only 13 GB of free space left .. :s so without warning, it turned some folders of music albums into 'file' files without an extension of 32k .. there are also some that have the extension 'file 0' ..
the folders are still filled inside, I'm sure, because, in my total space .. the space is taken ..
I tried to restore to a later date but I hadn't activated it .. so we're trying to do it another way ..
Yesterday I tried to use the Windows tool to check for errors, which has two repair modes: automatically repair file system errors, and search for and attempt to recover bad sectors .. which took some time .. now I find myself with some of the folders that have been recovered in their original function but the others remain without .. they are still neatly arranged but are useless .. ( double-clicking on them .. it asks me to open with .. choose the program
I would like to be able to run these same tests or similar ones outside of Windows or at least in parallel .. could someone explain to me how to do it via the command prompt with the least chance of degrading my folders .. they are quite large .. categorized by genre and filled with artists themselves filled with albums .. it would hurt ..
has anyone managed to recover partially or totally from a similar problem? can you explain how you proceeded?
thank you very much ;)- I have somewhat resolved my problem, but I'm not really sure how. I left my hard drive unplugged for at least 2 months, both from the power and via USB, and when I plugged it back in one day to try to recover my data, I was able to retrieve ALL my divx files that I couldn't copy before...
So, I started recovering deleted files, which had yielded nothing. Thanks to the GetDataBack software, I was able to recover 95% of my mp3s...
The only downside is that they are all renamed like this but are (95%) functional:

I don't know if it's the best solution, but...
Otherwise, try using the Ubuntu live CD to recover data. - alz thanks man .. ;) but I'm still going to try to find a way to reassign the original function of these folders .. it would work anyway .. otherwise for you .. if they are deleted folders .. undelete plus is really great, it restores all your folders in the original order with all the names and everything ;) directly from download.com
does anyone have any other solutions to propose to fix this in this way?

I had the same kind of problem, but it was only with one folder, after a scan of the key by Avast. My folder turned into a file without an extension, and it's a pretty important file. After the scan, I got a window telling me that the infected and repaired files were in a "found" folder on my PC. But where exactly is this folder???
