Files with unreadable characters on USB drive

Hello,
I have searched in vain on many forums for someone who has had the same problem as I have, and I have decided to ask for your advice.
I am using a recent USB stick (EMTEC 4GB). I have saved over 2GB of data on it (folders, Word documents, mp3s...), but since today, every time I open the USB stick, I see that all my folders have been replaced by 2 other folders and 3 files without extensions, named with unreadable characters.
However, looking at the properties of the USB stick, the available space has not changed, which makes me hope that my folders are recoverable, but I don't know how. Is it a virus? How can I retrieve my work? Thank you in advance for your advice.
