ink cartridge issue on Canon MP140

Question

Hello,
I purchased non-branded ink cartridges for my Canon MP140 printer, but when I install them, my printer displays an error message saying that the cartridge is not compatible, even though it was sold for it and is identical to the original cartridge in every way.
Is there a way to bypass this error message that is blocking all of my prints?

reset cartridges to 100% on a Canon MP140. Thanks to Maynard7.
1: disconnect the 220v from the printer.
2: Press and hold the power button (far right) and reconnect the 220v.
3: without releasing the power button, press reset (red circle and triangle) twice.
4: release the power button. The printer takes 10 seconds to start and displays 0. If not, start over.
5: press the + button to change from 0 to 1.
6: when 1 appears, press the COLOR button (green diamond) once: 2 lights will turn on: normal paper and photo paper. Load paper into the tray.
7: press POWER twice briefly, and the MP140 will print some bands and graphics. If it does not print, press COLOR or RESET once (it depends on the machines) and the page will print, likely indicating what is happening but it does not matter. However, the page must print!
8: the display returns to 0.
9: open the cover completely to see the inside of the printer and the cartridges. Remove the cartridges. While keeping it open, disconnect the 220v.
10: close the cover and reconnect the power.
11: refill the cartridges if it hasn't been done already.
12: reopen and reinstall the cartridges on the carriage that hasn't moved. Close and start by pressing POWER.
13: in the driver properties, check that the MP140 indicates that the cartridges are full.
There you go, it works!

I also have the same problem with reloaded cartridges; it seems that the cartridge level control needs to be reset. But despite my efforts, I cannot find this reset function. I'm sorry I can't provide a solution, but I am eager to get an answer as well.

Unfortunately, most of the COMPATIBLE ink cartridges for the new Canon printers cannot be recognized as new by the printer because they do not have the necessary chip. Canon cartridges now also have chips.
In fact, it can therefore be said that these cartridges are NOT compatible: they have the shape, the ink loading but not the chip.

Well, I had a very nice seller who told me that when you refill a cartridge 5 to 6 times, you need to change it after a while because of the chip inside that will eventually cause it not to be recognized. Well, it's normal, they need to sell their products, so I bought another one that I refilled, and after 8 refills, it did the same thing. So, there you go. A brand is still a brand; you shouldn’t buy a knock-off brand, as the sellers often say, it usually won’t work. That’s all.

Hello Doku,

While browsing for other things, I came across this discussion by chance.

Both cartridges must have ink, as stated in the manual :(
I was also frustrated because the scan function wouldn't even work... grrr
And when I put in a new full cartridge, everything worked again.

Cheap printer... you get what you pay for, I suppose ;)

PS: right now I'm looking at other printers because the price of cartridges is starting to ruin me!
2 large capacity compatible cartridges are almost the price of the printer. Well, I bought a slightly cheaper Pelikan (compatible) cartridge and I'll see if it's worth it.
I really miss my old printer, may it rest in peace, because 4 compatible cartridges (3 black + 1 color) for less than €10, those were the days. Plus, even without a cartridge, the scan works ;)

There is a tab to remove on the cartridges to allow air in. I encountered this problem; you simply need to enlarge the opening with a sharp object so that air can enter properly (perhaps a defect in the cartridge shell). We replace it, and the printer detects the cartridge. I did it with an Epson Stylus RX 585. See you!

Hello,
I followed exactly the procedure described by mcgyver75 to make the driver for the mp140 (installed on XP) stop announcing that the printer cartridges are empty. It worked perfectly and the two lights "B" (Black) and "C" (Colour) on my printer are off.

Hello, I buy my cartridges for my Canon MP140 printer at Comptoir d'encre at Canon prices. The generic PG37 is priced at €12.90 and the generic CL38 is priced at €16.20. They are available in XL at €17.49 for the PG50 and €18.50 for the generic CL51. For me, they are completely compatible.

I keep updated with this forum, and I know that some have not had the expected success following the method I provided a year or two ago. I published this procedure because it had worked for me, and I had partly found it in US English on American websites, trying to summarize what seemed to work. At that time, I tried to detail the process point by point so that nothing would be forgotten. A procedure may not work for various reasons: - the same model of printer may have modifications over time, and the embedded software can vary greatly. An update requested by the manufacturer for a machine can also remove many initial advantages (e.g., Lexmark s305, which can no longer be manually refilled after the update (<code>http://www.monconseillerpc.com/2011/08/une-mise-jour-pour-imprimantes-lexmark.html - we can get frustrated with a damn machine that doesn't work and miss one of the instructions along the way. Calm down and do everything again in order, checking off on PAPER the steps one after the other. - watch out for the vocabulary: unplugging really means unplugging, not just pressing off. And some manipulations need to be done in time, while a certain light is doing a certain thing. Is this the right button I'm pressing at that moment? - I no longer have this model currently, so I can no longer verify anything: one can achieve a good result or not for a host of other reasons, but I wanted at least for "my" procedure to be really clear. It's always possible to copy and paste it, separating the steps even more, printing it out, and checking each one when completed. So good luck...

Hello,  I have a Canon Pixma MX535 printer/fax and I replaced the black ink cartridge with a cheap but compatible cartridge, and since then I've been getting error messages, although the printer/fax works fine. At first, I had error 1688 insufficient black ink, and after Canon's technical support had me perform some operations, I now see the message "unknown black ink volume," and Canon can't help me!! Do you have a solution to propose? Should I replace the cartridge with a Canon cartridge??
