>>Stopping background programs
When the computer is powered on, a group of software called resident programs (TSR) loads automatically. These programs activate certain utilities of the computer, such as antivirus software, but are not necessary for the functioning of the computer. Occasionally, TSRs prevent the printer software from loading, so it cannot be installed correctly.
Under Microsoft Windows 98 and Windows Me, use the MSCONFIG utility to prevent TSR programs and services from starting.
NOTE: This step does not apply to Windows 2000, as the MSCONFIG utility does not exist in Windows 2000. If your computer is running Windows 2000, skip this step and proceed to "Step 4: Deleting temporary files and folders by running Disk Cleanup".
Click on Start, then on Run. The Run window appears.
In the Open box, type MSCONFIG and click OK. The MSCONFIG utility window opens.
Click on the General tab.
Click on Selective Startup.
If the checkbox next to Load startup items is checked, click it to uncheck it.
Click on Disable all.
Click on Apply, then Close.
NOTE: If an Access Denied message appears while you make changes, click OK and proceed. This message will not prevent you from making your changes.
Click Restart for the changes to take effect on
the computer at the next restart.
Once the computer has restarted, the following message appears: "You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the Windows startup settings." Select the option Don't show this message again.
>>Deleting temporary files and folders by running Disk Cleanup
Follow these steps to clean temporary files and folders:
To launch Disk Cleanup, click on Start,

>>Deleting temporary Internet files
Deleting downloaded program files
Emptying the Recycle Bin
Deleting files from your temporary folder
Deleting files created by other Windows tools
Deleting unused optional Windows components
After selecting the components to delete, click OK.
