Shortcut issues .lnk Solved/Closed

Question

Hello everyone,I have a problem with all the .lnk files on my PC.All the shortcuts on my desktop and in the start menu have the same icon (Notepad because I accidentally set it to open with Notepad) and don't open anything at all. However, the shortcut paths are correctly defined (the links to the .exe files are fine).Should I associate a specific program in 'open with' for this type of file??Additionally, I have ANOTHER problem! I'm on Windows XP and when I type regedit in the run command, I only have 2 seconds before the window closes by itself!! So, I can't go check in HKEY...Thanks in advance for your help because this is really getting on my nerves!!!

On the contrary, you need to disassociate Notepad from the lnk. Instead of associating it with a program, you do the opposite...

Thank you, it's a good idea, I have unassociated Notepad from .lnk. But now all my shortcut icons look like .dat files, and no .lnk files work. How can I restore the functionality and appearance of all these icons? All suggestions are welcome, thank you in advance.

Hello!  Following your issue, I quickly searched and found this fix: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/linkfile_fix.zip  (I had a friend who had the same problem)  According to the site, you just need to unzip the file and run the .reg (to include the settings in the registry)  Let me know if this solves your problem.  ++ Antoine

Well, I propose a solution for Vista users. My problem was the same, namely that I accidentally opened a desktop software with the "Word Pad" program and all the other desktop shortcut icons had .lnk extensions and opened with WordPad.  No need for restoration with this method:  Go to "Start", "default programs", in the window click on "choose your default programs".  The idea is to reassign to a program the extensions it is meant for by default, so .jpeg for Paint (among others) or .html for Internet Explorer.  If the program you associated your icons with is not in the list, as was the case for WordPad, then select another one that is (Internet Explorer for example) by right-clicking and opening with... on one of the desktop icons, then in the "set your default programs" window, select "choose defaults for this program" and then "set this program as default".  Conclusion: Internet Explorer will only be linked to the .html extensions by default and the other non-html shortcuts (in other words, all the others) will regain their respective associated programs and icons;

Launch "Regedit" and in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk", delete the "UserChoice" folder and then restart the session.  To launch regedit, you will first need to type "cmd" in the start menu search box (for Vista and Seven).

thank you for the forum, the issue mentioned above has also been my problem since this morning. After searching the web, I found the solution with mid00; the solution via the registry was effective for my Windows 7 version on an HPE 130 fr.

Thank you also to NALOURNA 57, I confirm that their fix also works on Windows 7, great! Reminder of the fix for the 'lnk' extension problems on all the shortcuts on the desktop that have become inoperable:  "Launch Regedit.exe (in search)  search for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Fileexts\.lnk  delete the "UserChoice" folder  restart the session  the shortcuts have returned to their previous state and the links too...."

Hi, the solution is easy... just click Ctrl+Alt+Del, open the Task Manager, go to File... then select New Task and type: explorer.exe and there you go, the problem is solved.
It works for Vista and Seven.

For your information, I had this issue. I tested the help via the registry key.
No results.
I tried a lot of little things.
No results.
Then I thought about doing a restore.
But before that, I made some changes with the software CCleaner.

The CCleaner software, after a scan of the registry and then a restart, resolved my issue.
For once, I find that this software is not so useless.

Download this file --> seven_lnk.reg and place it on the desktop.  Then restart by tapping F8 or F5 to go into --> safe mode.  Upon arrival, right-click on the file --> seven_lnk.reg, click on merge, accept even if there is an error message.  Then restart the PC.  -- Humans are at their best when things are at their worst.
