We'll always have the doubt of knowing whether Buffy is schizophrenic or not...

It broke the hearts of fans at the time! We even wondered if by the end of season 7, she wouldn't wake up for good in the asylum to finally come out of her trip.

We'll never have the answer. So you can only rely on episode 17, your heart, and your instinct...

According to the director himself (I saw this on an English site, but I can't find the source anymore), he wanted the viewer to decide which universe is the real one.

So

1) The universe of Buffy is real. Buffy was bitten by a vampire and had hallucinations where she thought she was imprisoned in a mental asylum, but that is false. So at the end of the episode, Buffy is cured.

2) The universe of Buffy (and of Angel by extension) would be an invention of Buffy who is actually locked up in a psychiatric hospital somewhere in Los Angeles; Buffy would therefore be in the same universe as the viewers. So at the end of the episode, Buffy has a relapse and goes crazy again.

Which scenario is true? That's for you to decide; the creator of Buffy did not want to impose his choice and thus leaves you the responsibility to choose which scenario is true.

For option #2, it is just as logical as #1; for example, the fact that Buffy dies and is resurrected by her friends. For option #2, Buffy would have regained her sanity, but as she was attached to her imaginary friends (Willow, Dawn, Xander, Spike, and Giles), she therefore relapsed for the first time.

In fact, it's just the other three idiots (Andrew, Jonathan, and Warren) who called the demon to find Buffy in order to inject her with the venom. It was a trick by the three guys so that she wouldn't know where she stood and would weaken.

Why does she make a nice poodle noise when you hit her? It's true, that's annoying! Even when she hits a zombie, she goes: hii, aoh.

Hello.

Well, this episode is quite brilliant and I admit I believed in it for a while. The idea that Buffy’s adventures are the delusion of a schizophrenic teenager was rather original, but unfortunately, that’s not the case.

Indeed, if one is observant enough (and a bit of a geek to note this kind of detail :>), one can notice in this episode that Buffy informs Willow of her hospitalization, which actually occurred in both "realities." So far, so clear.

This hospitalization happened after Buffy’s first encounter with a vampire. The time paradox that prevents this delusion from continuing is that her first guardian (a big man with a mustache whose name I’ve forgotten) had noticed and approached her before this first encounter.

Therefore, the reality of the "slayer" appears in the series even before Buffy’s first meeting with a vampire and thus the beginning of her hypothetical schizophrenia. Buffy is therefore not crazy... Too bad :(

Very good analysis, but on the other hand, one could think that the bearded man was a madman who tricked Buffy, pulling her into his delusion and forcing her parents to have her committed...

Finally, theoretically, a person cannot make another person schizophrenic (unless, of course, that person is not human). So, Buffy is not crazy.

Eleonore > L'orchidée

Or else, "the big man" is part of the delusion; it's a hallucination like everything else. The person who introduces her to this imaginary and delirious world does not exist. It's the first symptom of a normally banal teenager who wants to feel special (and who suffers from a mental illness).
The illness would have then worsened and led her to a psychiatric hospital, and in order to escape this harsh reality and because of her illness, she would have imagined a move to a new city, with a new life and new friends who would accept her for who she is and help her, even though it constantly puts them in danger (all for a girl they don't know). Willow and Alex had never been attacked by vampires or experienced paranormal events before Buffy arrived (even though they lived on a hellmouth!!).

The brilliance of this episode lies precisely in the fact that it is entirely credible, and even possible, that Buffy is actually just mentally ill.
In the end, everyone chooses the option they prefer, even if the ending of the episode suggests that the theory of the illness is the correct one....

One can also take this the other way around and conclude that it was a first psychotic episode where she sees a vampire, but not having fully theorized her delirium yet, she accepts the idea of psychiatry. Gradually, Buffy comes to justify her hallucination and enrich it by creating an entire universe around it. As she said, she never spoke of that famous vampire again, but that doesn't mean she forgot him... Illness always establishes itself insidiously. :)

I believe that Josh Whedon wanted to instill doubt in our minds with this episode.
In my opinion, Buffy is a schizophrenic, the end of the episode before the credits clearly shows this. But this is not the only "evidence."

In the series Angel, season 5 episode 19 "Time Bomb," Illyria clearly tells Angel: "You are the slave of a delusional mental construct." She says this in the middle of a monologue where she analyzes Angel.

She says this completely off-topic. Is this a hint from Josh Whedon about Buffy's real situation? I believe it is! If Buffy is schizophrenic, then her entire world is a mental construct, even Angel and his series.

Hey!
The person pretending to be Joss! (and maybe also SMG...)
If you want to make people believe you are who you claim to be, at least have the intelligence to write your name CORRECTLY... So, I think you should call yourself JOSS WHEDON, with an "H" in the right place...
Come on, let's say we believe you! ;)

I haven't read it all, but I would compare this episode 17 of Buffy to the Harry Potter spin-off.
Let me explain:
if Buffy is in HP while she believes herself and we believe her to be the Slayer, it means Harry Potter is also a schizoid.
Let me explain:
the great similarities: a violent universe (demons/Nazi wizards), abuse towards minors (the countless adults who are torturers is staggering in both series), a "problem" with "parents" - Harry is an orphan, Buffy has a serious father complex with all her guys...
finally, both have "incredible" powers and are also the "Chosen One"...

a lot of similarities.

so, let's go back: if Buffy is in HP, it's possible that HP is also interned and therefore is in HP... HP in HP...
hi.

Just a little note for the girl pretending to be Sarah Michelle Gellar (on 22/04/2009), you're an idiot, and if you were a fan, you would know that Sarah doesn't even speak French...!!! So don't pretend to be what you're not!!!

It's Marina Malzy, I'm sure of it!!! She's crazy, she's on Facebook and thinks she's a vampire killer!!!

Hello everyone, this is Joss Whedon, the director of the series, and I confirm what my colleague Sarah told you a bit earlier: Buffy is just a vampire slayer, period.
Just kidding, I'm not Joss Whedon; seriously, I don't think she's crazy because then it would mean that everything happening in the series ANGEL is also the result of Buffy's imagination. The final scene is, in my opinion, just to create doubt among the fans.

I agree. Buffy is not crazy, it is indeed the demon's venom that makes her believe that. The ending scene with her parents and the doctor is meant to create doubt in the viewers' minds. Otherwise, the series wouldn't have a reason to exist.

If you're a fan of Buffy, you can read the comics!
Season 8 tells the continuation of the adventures after the end of season 7!
And there is also season 1, which currently covers what happens before Buffy arrives in Sunnydale, and volume 2 talks about the psychiatric hospital stay before everything we've seen on TV.

In fact, everyone is mistaken; the ending can be misleading when they say, "it's over, we've lost," but it's the monster called forth by the trio of idiots that did this. If this monster had brought back reality and shown that Buffy is actually crazy, it would mean that all three had figured out that Buffy had a false life, which is impossible because they would themselves be part of her imagination. And if Buffy is crazy and invented the trio (Andrew, Jonathan, and Warren), she wouldn't have invented such an ending in her schizo mind. In short, the fact that Buffy is crazy and that her life in Sunnydale is invented is impossible.

Great info Tashira, it clearly shows that Joss Whedon plays with this incredible Reality.
Absolutely brilliant this Russian doll system, one initial delirium leading to another, a series that leads to another. This ending is perfect, it’s somewhat the explanation of the series, this episode could have just as well been a pilot as a finale. I don't think it bothers the director to admit that his script is based on the delirium of a schizo! All that matters is that the fans dive deeply into the intrigue of his series, no matter if he admits it's a delirium or not.
It’s a bit like in fantasy films in general when the protagonist plunges into an incredible parallel world and in the end, he realizes that it was all just a dream, even if there always remains THE little disturbing element that proves this world exists...

Except here it's the opposite because the initial situation is fantastic and this little episode in passing is completely plausible.

I think Joss Whedon's goal is to make fans crack a little smile at the end of this episode, we realize how much all the phenomena marking the series (the numerous apocalypses, the demons and other vampires, the witches, the dead coming back to life, even Dracula!...)
are really crazy and exaggerated and it’s the little return to reality, which whispers to us: "Hey but all this is a joke, you didn’t really believe it, did you?!"

(I find this resolution much more inspired than that of Lost, for example)

However, I don’t remember the episodes at all, even less about Buffy in the asylum, so I can’t follow Mozgus’s analysis.

I say that Buffy is not crazy!!
She just has a very vivid imagination x)....

Otherwise, it’s true (as Tashira mentioned above) that the line from Illyria in season 5 (time bomb) of Angel.. (you are just a mental construct -->> to Angel) could easily be associated... but well, it remains a simple line.. that may have no connection at all...

it's the so-called three super villains (Andrew, Jonathan, and that crazy Warren) who cast a spell on him

and just for your information, Buffy doesn't stop at season 7 since I own season 8

I think we'll never know, but if you look at the summary of the previous episodes at the beginning of episode 18, it doesn't reference the end of episode 17.

After all, everyone has their own opinion.

Hi, so basically the demon injected her with a venom so she ends up stuck in another dimension and over there no one believes she's a vampire slayer and they think she's crazy. And to get back to reality, but if you want go on Dailymotion to watch the following videos. There you go, I hope this helps you.

No, you didn't understand anything! At the end, we hear the doctor say "it's over, we lost her," which means that in reality, Buffy is not a Slayer but just a crazy person inventing a world for herself. That's all, and thanks to the doctor's injection, she was a bit lucid (when she thought it was the monster that injected her) throughout the episode. That's why the episode ends like that, but then they never talk about it again; it's just to do something original. But Buffy is crazy.

Cool idea!

It's still Joss Whedon and I'm replying to the message from "valisette" dated 08/28/09
I was joking, and I mentioned it in my message, it was just to respond to a message that I read a little higher up

Don't get all worked up over such little things!!
And no, I’m not the person who pretended to be SMG!!!

As for getting back to the subject, I don’t think Buffy is crazy because, as I said in my message the other day,
Let's imagine she's in a mental asylum and that her life as well as the plots of each season come from her imagination; this would also mean that she imagined the plots that take place in the series Angel, which is a bit contradictory because even though there is a connection between the Buffy/Angel series, we can't say that Buffy actually participates in the Angel series!!
If we follow the story and she is really crazy, this would mean that when we watch Angel, we are actually immersed in Buffy's imagination!! Weird!!!
