Seeing it is good, but generally when you open a file it's to modify it..
Going to Microsoft feels a bit like "Hello, you've once again changed your formats to force everyone to buy your office suite, please allow me to read my documents."
For now, OpenDocument is the only ISO standard, independent of a company (correct me if I'm wrong):

Hello,
The .xlsx files are the new extensions for Excel files (since Office 2007) (previously .xls).
To be able to read such files with older versions of Office, you need to download a "compatibility pack"....

To retrieve files X (docx, xlsx, pptx...) the easiest way is to use the latest version of OpenOffice, version 3 that has just been released. And it's free! That said, it's better to avoid files X.

Hi, if there’s a password, you need to get it from the person who posted it or sent it to you!
If it’s retrieved from a site, dig around to see if you can find it written down somewhere.
Otherwise, you have to crack the password, but that’s illegal; with thorough searching, you should find it...

Switching to OpenOffice.org is free with open formats, usable on Windows as well as on Mac OS or Linux!
With OpenSource, there are always solutions!
Avoid proprietary software with closed source code!
I had a hard time switching to Linux, but I’ve never seen anything as amazing!
No need to defragment (hard drive lasts longer), no viruses (because you’re only admin when modifying the system), almost all software is free, very fast install, no need for wifi drivers, printer, or sata at startup.......
