how to read Excel file with OpenOffice Solved

Question

Good evening, with my new PC, I have Vista and it came with Microsoft Office Evaluation which expires on January 31, 2008.
I was advised to download OpenOffice to continue working for free. The problem is, some files open and I can use them (edit, save, etc.), but others don’t open because I am asked to choose a filter. In these choices, I’ve tried quite a few options in xls but it keeps throwing me out. Do you have a solution? Thank you for your help.

What program from Open Office are you trying to open your xls with? I assume you know that it needs to be opened with Calc, and that's where your problem lies, but I just want to make sure.
Trying to open an xls with OoO Writer is completely impossible.

When you install OpenOffice, it asks you if Excel files (xls) should be opened by Calc (the equivalent of Excel) by default; otherwise, you take your xls files and right-click to open with... Calc. You can even change the file type association in folder options to correspond to Calc. Now, this is under reservation because I don't know Vista very well.

When I installed OpenOffice, I clearly specified that xls files should be opened with "Calc," and when I try to "open with..." Calc, I always end up with this import filter list.
The files that open correctly are xls files, and the ones that do not open are xlsm files (which include macros).
What should I do to open them?

Hello  The files that open correctly are xls files  Perfectly normal..  and those that do not open are xlsm files  Also normal because it's the new Excel format from 2007 and even older versions of Excel cannot open them without updated add-ins.   (that account for macros).  No, that has nothing to do with it: you can have the same macros in both formats.  Note: OpenOffice is not compatible with Excel macros!  What should I do to open them?  Put them on a USB drive and using a friend's Excel 2007, save them as .xls --  Knowledge is the only substance that increases when shared. (Socrates)
