Wii remote batteries

Hello, I wanted to play on the Wii earlier, and it told me that my batteries were almost dead and that I needed to change them...
So here's my problem, I changed the batteries, but the remote still doesn't work!

What should I do? If you have the time, it would be nice to tell me how you change your Wii remote batteries, maybe I made a mistake somewhere...

Look at the back of the controller and there are plus and minus signs, but the battery's plus should be connected to the controller's plus.
