Accent and Subtitle Issues

Hello,
I recently bought a multimedia hard drive of this type:

No problems at first glance, but when I connected it to my TV, I noticed that all the special characters in the subtitles (.srt) were replaced by "holes": é è à ù ç, etc.
It's quite hard to watch a movie under these conditions...
Is there a way to "convert" the subtitles? I know it's possible to search for all the special characters in Wordpad and replace them, but it's quite cumbersome. The same goes for muxing, which reduces quality.
Is there software to modify special characters? Do I need to change the subtitle format???

    Hi,
    I found an easier way...
    No need to download anything...
    Just open the file "subtitle.srt" with Notepad:
    1- File > Save As...
    2- In "Encoding" choose UTF-8
    3- Save
    And that's it...

    hello

    despite the encoding changes to HTF8 or transcription software, I always had issues with special characters for accents.
    so I tested with ANSI encoding. and it works!
    spread the words ...

    Hello,

    I recently encountered a problem with accents that were not displaying correctly. The issue was due to the encoding of the subtitle file. I resolved all my issues by using a free software...

    You need to open the *.srt file with Notepad; save it as and choose the encoding "UNICODE": for me it works by embedding it in Times New Roman with FORMAT FACTORY.

    It works perfectly for me too!
    But I'm on a Mac, so I have to go back through Windows...
    The TextEdit software included with macOS doesn't support accents either. Is there a way for it to read them in the correct encoding?

      Hello Kiosuke,

      Since you’re also on Mac, you can stay on the same platform by using the VLC software, just like me (and many others, by the way).
      When you open your video in advanced mode, you choose the subtitle file that you associate with it. In the settings, you have subtitle encoding. You select UTF-8, and bam, everything becomes readable.

    I think I found a new solution. In Notepad, before encoding in ANSI, copy all the subtitle text (which should initially be encoded in UTF). Once the copying is done, encode it in ANSI, you will see (in my case, special characters replacing accents, etc.). To avoid this issue, delete all the text and paste what you copied before the ANSI encoding. Normally, it works.

    My problem is not solved for me; the accented characters are replaced by special characters.
    I have tried all the encodings, but my disk either does not display the accents or replaces them with unsuitable characters.

    Does anyone have a solution?

      Hi,

      I have a slower but effective solution:

      1- Open the subtitle file in Notepad

      2- Browse through the text until you spot the first inappropriate character (e.g., hi _how are you?) you guessed it, this phrase should be: "hi how are you?" instead of "hi _how are you?"

      3- Copy the inappropriate character (in my example, copy the "_")

      4- Press Ctrl+H

      5- Paste the intrusive character in "Find: " ("_")

      6- Write the replacement character in "Replace with: " ("ç")

      7- Click on "Replace All"

      At this stage, all the "_" in the file will be replaced with "ç" and you can then start again from step 2 for another character...

      Don't forget to save your file before using it.
