I would like to start a small web hosting business, but I would like to know
how to set everything up. Soon, I will be buying an Apple Xserve server.

So the questions:

Is the Xserve a good server for web hosting?
How do you configure the server and my computer for web hosting?

So I know a bit about hosting since I did hosting myself at one point.

Here are the possible solutions:
- You buy a reseller package, it's good for starting out and not very expensive.
But you need a lot of knowledge in hosting (FTP, MySQL...) and at least know how to code in HTML.
I would say it's the best way to start;
- Then when you know what you're doing, the best thing is to rent dedicated servers from 1&1 or even OVH under a Linux platform.
There you can configure your server for hosting purposes.
There are many tutorials online. But again, if you don't have any skills in hosting, you won't succeed.
- Finally, instead of renting, you can actually buy servers for your home.
Then they really belong to you, but it's extremely rare for individuals to use this option! It's too expensive and less profitable (at the beginning). And it can also be less secure and less reliable.

Anyway, definitely don't buy Xserves because it's already a huge mistake to buy Apple servers! The best is Linux for hosting (Windows and Mac are unreliable and very difficult to configure!)

I think you should start with a reseller package, but without knowledge, it could be hard, even very hard.

To become a host, one needs many skills:
- web programming
- system programming
- advanced system administration
- customer relationship management
- accounting

Simply buying a server isn't enough (otherwise everyone would know)!

In any case, on a forum like this one, it would take too much time to develop all the topics related to this activity.

However, it is quite possible to create a small-scale web hosting site on any PC with a fixed IP address. One must not forget that the machine needs to be permanently connected to the Internet with a very high speed (around 100 Mb/s). Renting a dedicated server is a good solution because it involves less risk, especially when starting out.
One shouldn't host on a personal machine at home because if you charge hosted clients, you need to protect against hardware failures, power outages, hacking attempts...

Without technical skills, one must seek assistance from a specialized company, but of course, you have to pay them, so customers need to come in quickly and in large numbers...

If you’re asking these questions, it's definitely because you can't handle hosting!

However, if you just want to make a little money and stay at this level:
Reselling hosting can be interesting. Some hosting providers allow you to have a reseller account at reasonable prices and be able to sell web packages. If the hosting provider doesn’t offer it, don’t hesitate to send them a quick email; generally, they are all interested.

Otherwise, web hosting = large machines (not just one machine) allowing for redundancy / clustering.
Professional connection means no Free/Orange or others; it must be in full duplex, because it's not the download that matters but the upload.
You must have a dual EDF connection... otherwise, you need to rent space in a datacenter. UPS... etc.

In short, becoming a host = a few thousand euros of investment and advanced skills!

Already you can start having fun by creating a website and getting it hosted; it will show you how you should do it and the various ways to achieve this. Then find yourself an old PC (not too old though) and turn it into a web server. When you succeed, well, you'll have the basics. Also, learn HTML, PHP, MySQL, and some stuff about networks.

I am currently developing for my hosting service that will offer many game servers, VPS, Cloud and dedicated servers (but no WEB!)

To start, I would like to revisit the point of having one or more purchased servers to run your hosting service: depending on your knowledge and resources, try to compare the pros and cons. And it’s not a bad idea. Profitability is higher because once you’ve paid for everything, aside from the licenses, you won’t have anything to pay monthly (getting a dedicated server for a host would roughly cost you about €60/month plus €20 for the cPanel license and the license for your billing panel. In short, you’d be looking at around €100/month (if you use WHMCS as your billing panel). That adds up to €1200 per year, and with that, you can have some very complete servers!)

However, you will need a very good internet connection (fiber optic). If you’re interested, we could become partners.
