Locked system icons Solved/Closed

Question

Hello,
On Vista, the system icons: battery, volume, and network disappeared from the notification area.
The window "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties, Notification Area tab" indicates that the checkboxes to enable these icons are unchecked and grayed out.
How can I re-enable these checkboxes to recover the icons?

Yo! Try this
-Right-click on the taskbar, then start Task Manager
-Open the 2nd tab and end the "explorer.exe" process
-Don't panic, go back to the first tab, then click the "New Task..." button
-Enter explorer.exe

I found my volume icon again like this.

it's the same for me (the network and sound icons) but it already happened a while ago and I managed to fix the problem; unfortunately I don't remember the fix anymore

Hello everyone!

I have the same problem, the volume, battery, and connectivity icons disappear from time to time (sometimes one, sometimes two, sometimes three, and not always the same ones) or it shows that there is no connection when there actually is one...

So I deleted the two files in TrayNotifiy, but the bug keeps happening since then...

Any other ideas please? I’m at my wits' end over such a small bug, but it’s so annoying!

UP please, I’m in the same mess, to lower the volume (PC keyboard is dead) to connect to another Wi-Fi network or simply to see my remaining battery charge it’s really getting tough! I should specify, I reinstalled Windows 7 64-bit and not 32-bit as originally, dad couldn’t handle it anymore and I didn’t pay attention to the version I was installing... please help me :'(

Your solution, buddy, that worked for me only once on Windows 7, because after every restart the values:

IconStreams and PastIconsStream

stay and won’t clear. Is there an effective solution to delete them once and for all?

Under Windows 8, here is the procedure to restore the volume on the taskbar:

- Right-click on the taskbar, left-click on Task Manager
- Left-click on the 6th horizontal tab Details, scroll down to the file explorer.exe, right-click it and then left-click End Task, which stops the “explorer.exe” process
- Left-click on File at the very top left
- Left-click again on Run new task and in the box to the right of Open, type explorer.exe and press OK; the volume should return.
