Yes, you can, to use your PS3 controller on your PC you need to connect it via the USB cable and install the UNOFFICIAL driver. However, the gyroscopic function is not usable, it seems.

I have the solution...
I had the same problem as you. I restarted my PC, turned the console off and on, then I switched it off with the power button at the back, and then it worked. I think the controller was still waiting to connect to the PS3.
