EMTEC Movie Cube-R - installer le firmware

Question

Hello,

I just bought an Emtec Movie Cube -R without a hard drive, as well as a 500GB Deskstar SATA2 hard drive that I installed inside.

Since I chose the option to buy the hard drive separately, I need to install the firmware for the multimedia hard drive to work!

The case powers on, and when I connect it to my PC, Windows properly detects the new hard drive connected via USB, so far, no problem!

But when I launch the installer (FirmwareInstaller_EMTEC_V2.5.4_0823.exe) to install firmware V.0.9.14 (downloaded from the Emtec site), the software tells me that the Movie Cube-R is not connected!

I have disconnected and reconnected it several times (as they recommend if it is not detected), ... I created a partition (without formatting) to have an associated letter under Windows, still without success!

Do you know how to get the firmware installer to detect that the case is indeed connected?

Firmware update done today
No problem, it went smoothly.
After 10 minutes of use, apparently only the best, especially the subtitles which finally appear correctly. Tip: switch to South Eastern European in the SETUP menu and the accents, the cedillas, and everything else works.
For Wi-Fi, my USB key provided with my Livebox doesn't work (boo! :()
Thanks to EMTEC for this update. Hoping to see more new ones in the near future.

I just called back, ... and there was someone ... very nice in addition!  It seems that it needs to be completely partitioned in NTFS, then unplugged (power + USB) plug the power back in, wait 30 seconds reconnect the USB  and then it detects it and follow the rest of the instructions ... Hello everyone and with me (purchase of Moviecube-R pack + 500Go Samsung HDD from Topachat) it will be one more to look for the solution.  I tested formatting in NTFS, in Fat32, I also tried renaming the partition (I saw in the manual that they mention "PVR BOX") but nothing works, the firmware installation program does not find the MovieCube-R.  I'm at my father-in-law's place who has a Mac and not a PC, so I wanted to test it but the installation program only runs on Windows and there is no Mac version!!!!  At 209 euros it seemed like a very good deal at first but it’s turning into a scam!!!! Anyway, I’m not losing hope and I'm happy not to be alone because even though I'm not an IT pro, it seemed rather simple according to the manual… and I can’t do it… HELP… Steve

little additional question:  where did you buy your Cube? I got mine from Topachat, but I prefer to look for a solution with Emtec because I'm afraid Topachat will exchange it for the same thing (with the same potential problems)  for your information, here’s an email from Emtec from last week; it doesn’t help much but well:  Mr., You must follow these instructions step by step:  1/ Please refer to the hard drive installation manual and make sure you have a 3.5"" SATA drive. 2/ Turn on the Movie Cube-R and let it go into standby mode. 3/ Download the firmware installer from this link http://www.emtec-international.com/fr/firmware ISQUES%20DURS&ss_gamme=MOVIECUBE-R, unzip the file. 4/ Connect the Movie Cube-R to your PC, let the PC install the drivers, then launch the firmware installer and follow the instructions. same symptoms for installing the wd500 hard drive in the emtec case, the firmware recognizes it and installs a partition titled reserved with some files, but when it comes to switching from USB to the TV and partitioning and formatting the other drives, a white screen and installation stuck. I've sent an email to their customer service, I'm waiting for their reply, but given the discussion, I'm not very reassured.

Hello, Same purchase with a similar hard drive (Sata2 400Go) Without formatting the hard drive, I launched the firmware, which recognized the Emtec equipment well. Then the following steps: - It first suggested creating a partition of 1, 2, 3, or 4 HD (1 HD being equal to 1Go): I answered 2 - Of the remaining 398 Go, it asked me to choose the part reserved for recording: I answered 25% - Of the remaining 298 Go, it asked if I wanted to create 1 or 2 partitions for data: I answered 2 It processes and responds that everything is fine and that I now need to connect the multimedia hard drive to my television to complete the installation. What I did: I got the Emtec logo but nothing happened... After 5 minutes of staring at a fixed image, I unplugged everything and went back to the PC. I plugged the thing back in, right-clicked on "This PC," managed, double-clicked on disk management: the disk that appeared without being formatted before the firmware installation no longer shows up... What to do??? I think I will write to Emtec and include the forum address in the message... Maybe a kind soul will provide us with a solution....

Hello, I experienced the same scenario as most of you. I think I have tried everything too. I even left a message on the Emtec support, no news. Contacting Topachat is impossible!!! (and it costs €1.35 + €0.34/min). The only way I found to send them a message (to Topachat) was to cancel my order. They accepted the mandatory registered return which costs me €14.  So that's an operation that makes me waste €20 plus the time lost.  One last oddity, the movie-cube-R (or not R by the way) has disappeared from the Topachat site!!!!  Could there be a deeper problem with this product?

I had the same issue, and here's the solution: the hard drive must be formatted in FAT32. (A blank disk is not formatted). Windows does not format large disks in FAT32, so it's best to use Partition Magic or an equivalent, and at least part of the disk should be formatted in FAT32 (after which the Emtec driver recognizes the disk). Emtec doesn't make it easy for people who want to save over €100 by assembling their own drive, and you have to get your hands dirty. Otherwise, after that, it works great.

found on 01net, where they tested the product:  "in addition to the presence of a partition reserved for the system (about 200 MB in FAT 16), two other partitions appear. They are formatted in FAT 32"  If this can help you...

Hi fekaraboss  I tested in FAT32 (formatting with SwissKnife, a little utility) by formatting the whole disk (500GB), it takes time but nothing better!!!  Can you confirm if you made several partitions? Did you give them any specific names, and once formatted, how did you proceed?:   power connection, 30 seconds then USB connection and firmware installation software or another method? Because I admit I got my hands dirty, as you say, and tested quite a few things but the solution still eludes me!!! Unfortunately... every time the firmware installation software says: MovieCubeR not found!!!  Thanks in advance  Whassup69

I tested making a 30GB partition in FAT32, then I unplugged everything, plugged in the power, waited 30 seconds, then the USB... and nothing! Same with the entire partition in FAT32 (nice SwissKnife (at least a software that detects the HDD!)) etc... and nothing!  Just for your information, on Tuesday morning, they also told me they were looking into it and would call me back before noon (we must not have the same clock!) Tomorrow morning, I will try to reach them again!!!!  For those who managed to get a bit further than "Movie Cube-R not found", could you upload either the reserved partition that allows the movie to be detected or the system partition once installed? I just got off the phone with customer service, I explained to them that I had already spent 30 minutes with them, and that we had tried everything without resolution.   Their response is that I need to return the device because it must have a problem!  Great... I also contacted them through Top Achat, so I will have to deal with a call at €1.35 per call and then €0.34 per minute.   We're so happy!  I'm going to try one last time at work & then that's it! I have a lot of trouble getting the movie cube R to be recognized by the USB on my Windows XP: I managed to get through the setup (disk formatting) following this procedure: 1) installation of the driver provided on the CD-ROM 2) download from Emtec of firmware 9.14 3) connection of the Emtec to the PC's USB (Emtec case powered off) 4) running the executable of the firmware and powering on the Emtec 5) follow the procedure of the firmware executable: a live video partition (UDF) and a multimedia partition readable by Windows in FAT 32 the program offers two FAT 32 partitions, I chose the single partition option reboot, it's ok for the hard drive, now the next step: network etc. I'm stuck in network configuration, whether DHCP or static IP, it's impossible to see the Emtec on the internal network from a PC running XP, even by "going down to the basement" with command prompt net use etc. apparently, there is a Samba server that is native in the Emtec (it should work without problems under XP!) but no, the manual states that it may not work!!! and that we should wait for a firmware update....I think that's the case if you have solutions, I'm all ears

Hello Gena,  At the end of the firmware installation, it suggests connecting the Emtec box to the television. Were you able to get past this step? (Can you describe it to us? I ended up with a completely frozen Emtec screen, and then when I reconnected the drive to the PC, it was no longer visible.) Can you also provide us with a description of your hard drive before launching the firmware (type of partition (extended logical), type of formatting NTFS FAT32, size of the partitions, etc.)? When installing the hard drive in the enclosure, the HDD was blank with no partitions (out of the store). It's a Samsung 500 GB SATA. Then I used the CD-ROM provided with the Emtec to install the USB driver. Next, I downloaded firmware version 9.14 from the Emtec website, launched the executable, connected the enclosure to the PC via USB (Emtec enclosure powered off), and then powered on the Emtec. In the firmware program, there is a "search" button for USB devices, and it worked for me. I believe that the Emtec enclosure has a native Linux kernel and an option for USB host, which is causing issues with Windows recognizing the USB device, hence the need to power on after connecting the USB.

I forgot to specify in the previous topics: during the firmware phase, this is when the program asks us for the desired partition sizes: UDF version for the video recording part (mandatory) and FAT32 for the multimedia part (it proposes two FAT32 partitions by default but we can only take one). Then we disconnect everything from the PC. We then connect everything to the TV  at startup, a setup launches with formatting of the chosen partitions, automatic reboot of the box, that's fine!  Well, for me, there's still the problem of recognizing the Movie Cube R on the home XP network, but I'm afraid this is more of an incomplete firmware issue, the native Samba server having few configuration options (IP address, DHCP choice). By tinkering with the net view command on a PC, I can see a resource \VENUS RTK samba but can't go any further, to be continued.

re hi after testing on 4 PCs (3 with XP and 1 with 98) I contacted Emtec this morning, a technician (competent, finally someone who knows what they're talking about on a support line, which is rare) confirmed that I'm on the right track, so according to him, there might be a problem with the motherboard of the MovieCubeR. He sent me a rather detailed installation procedure in .doc format that doesn’t help me, but if it can help someone, leave your emails here and I'll send it to you; As for me, I'm returning the package to Topachat for repair or exchange??? to be determined, but at 209 euros for the whole thing, I want one that works and not a refund. It seems that time is important once the disk is initialized (the _reserved_ directory), and we move to the TV screen. It eventually worked for me, meaning a screen with a progress bar and disk formatting. I avoided a return; a manual has been added with the firmware v915 on the Emtec website; now I'm tackling the network because it doesn't seem very simple.

Indeed, the reserved partition is for the operating system. The rest is for audio and video. For the installation, I struggled a bit, but as I mentioned earlier, I managed to succeed. I downloaded the firmware from the Emtec website (as the one on the CD doesn't work). The enclosure was purchased from Top Achat and the hard drive is a Samsung 500GB. Connecting the device to the PC takes quite a while, and I held down the button on the enclosure for a long time; then the enclosure turned off, and it needs to be turned back on. If it appears as a removable hard drive, then it's all good! Then take the firmware .exe which will create 2 partitions (d: reserved, e: disk). Don't rush and wait for the instructions. The second part of the installation takes place on the TV. Again, be sure to respect the waiting times. I can use the Emtec for audio, video, and photos without any problem. It works like a removable hard drive. Be careful, when connected to the PC, it takes a while to be recognized.

Hi everyone   Happy owner of an Emtec Movie Cube with a 400GB SATA hard drive, I also struggled to install the firmware which was not on the installation CD but I had to download it. But anyway...   So for me, it works perfectly and the timeshifting process is a delight!!!!   So I installed the software but it told me that the hardware was not found ????   So I unplugged everything, reconnected the power supply, then a minute later the USB, and it didn't recognize anything. In the meantime, the hard drive was off. So in the end, it recognized it when it was in standby with the status light on!!!!!   For me, it works like this and every time I connect the hard drive to transfer files, I have to fiddle with the power supply and the power button until it recognizes it.   After this, the setup on the TV was done in 5 minutes   Honestly, I don't regret the purchase, it's pure happiness: it plays everything, records TV with time-shifting, and uses timeshifting!!!    The only downside is that it poorly handles SRT subtitles, indeed it replaces accents or "ç" with big boxes.   So good luck to everyone with the installation, but it’s worth it.

Hello,  Personally, I also had the same issues during the initial installation. It was impossible to get the Emtec recognized by my PC. I tried it on my friend's laptop and there I succeeded... Note: I didn't partition anything beforehand. Also, the detection is slow, but the box needs to be powered on. Indeed, if the HDD isn't spinning, then the USB won't find anything. So I personally turn on the box, wait 30 seconds (the time for the internal Linux system to boot), and then I plug in the USB... and again: WAITING... reserved appears first, then the second multimedia partition... I believe the first time I only had RESERVED. And then, when you unplug the box, the update via the TV is VERY VERY SLOW and especially doesn't start the website... you should count on a good 30 seconds.... That's it.  Good luck gentlemen! If you have the possibility, try on several PCs.  Ciao Fred

In fact, when you turn on the box and connect it via USB, if you stay on the TV, you see a message asking if you want to switch to USB mode... that's probably the delay, a timeout to switch to USB mode so it appears in the Windows Explorer.  Otherwise, version 0.9.15 doesn't seem stable to me... it's better to stay on 14... I'll try again for a day or two, but I think I'm going to switch back to 14... sometimes version 15 the box boots but freezes or turns on by itself! and I don't understand why... :(  Ciao Fred

Well, I tested the USB 35 seconds 700 MB for 5 minutes, everything went well for the RJ45 (14 MB/s) recording is perfect, really great, I will try to test the rest to see if it's worth keeping the only problem is the menu, it's a bit yucky and the scrolling speed is slow.

Hello, I see I'm not the only one. Same problem, same equipment. Top Achat + 500 GB. First, I downloaded the firmware, which was missing on the CD, I printed the manual, and of course, like you, Movie Cube was not found. I left everything plugged in and rebooted my PC, and my first action was wrong because I had set 2 partitions as default and 50%, so for the 500 GB, I had 125 and 125. I started over, but still with recognition issues with Movie Cube. Stopped and restarted, and it was fine. I did 90% multimedia now and a single partition. I unplugged, and the movie takes care of everything with a progress bar that runs in yellow, and finally, I now have 450 GB of multimedia and the rest as a recording buffer. Believe it or not, on another PC with the same configuration, the movie is not recognized. And sometimes, if it’s on for 2 or 3 hours, it won’t turn off anymore. I have to unplug it. Otherwise, it’s true that it works well, but it’s tough.. I’ve put it back up for sale on Le Bon Coin because configuring it is just too much of a pain. I hope my feedback helps you. Hi, my problem is related to connecting the hard drive to my CanalSat decoder. In fact, when using the SCART socket with 6 RCA connectors, I do not have any image feedback on my TV, yet the SCART socket is the one for my VCR which had image feedback on my TV. I tested this SCART socket, and everything seems fine.  What should I do? In the meantime, I am only using 3 out of the 6 RCA connectors (the input ones), and for output, I am using another 3RCA-3RCA cable that goes from the Emtec box output to my TV. It depends: If you only have a TV with the Emtec box connected to it, then when you record, you will have to leave your TV on. If you have another source for TV: either a TNT decoder, or a CanalSat or TPS decoder, you connect the Emtec box to this decoder and not to the TV, so it’s the decoder that will need to be on, and the TV can remain off. I just got it and no problem  Windows XP + 250 GB disk that I formatted in FAT32  1- The disk must be in FAT32 (very important)  2- Plug the multi disk into the PC and wait for Windows to recognize it.  3- Launch the driver (firmware) and then wait for the multi disk to stop.  Unplug everything  wait again.  4- Plug everything back in, restart the firmware and continue the application.  5- Unplug everything again.  6- Connect the multi disk to the TV with the SCART connector, wait 15 minutes and it's good.

I bought one too but with a 500 GB hard drive for 299 euros   I have a little info in case you don't know: !!! there are TWO FIRMWARES !!! one for movie cube WITH hdd and one for movie cube WITHOUT hdd! be careful when you install. also, you should not install drivers on the pc if you have XP because it causes problems! and you need to format your hdd to FAT32 for the movie cube!   quick question: for those who have one that works: do you also have problems with the internal clock of the movie cube-R? every time I turn it off, it resets and shows the date of January 8, 2008. No solution ... connected via USB, Emtec considers it to be an external USB drive ... so no video for the TV. That seems logical.  As for the two firmwares, I would say there is one firmware, but two possible operations: installation or firmware update.. right? But it remains at 0.9.15.  Regarding the errors, I reported them to Emtec but haven’t heard back... however, I saw the Emtec in a Cora near my home, I imagine the more buyers there are, the more bug reports there will be, and the more pressure Emtec will have to release fixes... for now, it’s stagnating... for example, when programming a recording, it starts, but at the end the Emtec doesn't stop! Also, with 0.9.15, I have experienced more freezes with the box... it boots, displays the guide, and bam freeze... no way to do anything...  Ciao Fred

Hi Fred,   I have the same problem as you: when I set up a recording, it starts but never stops! Plus, with my internal clock issue, it's messing things up! But I contacted customer support and they're going to come pick it up! The clock malfunction is a hardware issue, so they're either going to repair it or do a straight exchange! Actually, I turn on the box, I plug in the USB cable after a good 20 seconds (the time it boots, and if we are using the TV at the same time, we get a message saying that it has "detected a USB connection, do you want to switch to USB mode"). Then the PC first detects the RESERVED - where the OS is - and then the multimedia partition. And then it turns off (the front light, as if it were in standby). Then when I eject the USB, it turns off by itself... so I don't have the same issue as you. But to be honest, I use the network more through an SMB mount than USB. It's slower, but there's no need to move the box.  Jordan: As for the clock, I didn't even look, but you can tell them that you're not the only one whose recording starts but does not finish...  It's not perfect, but this little box still has potential... EMTEC really needs to step up their game!!!! Seeing it in a Cora near me reassures me a bit... the more people who have it, the more EMTEC will have to step up... especially if they want to enter a heavily loaded market (TVico, Peekton, Samsung, etc...) Can't update the firmware because the box is not recognized, I've tried with 2 different PCs and tried the various methods described here, but nothing works...  The problem is that quite a few div-x files won't play (I think I'm on version 9.11 of the firmware currently)!  Is anyone else experiencing the same issue? I’ve had the cube for about ten days. I didn’t have any issues updating the firmware.
1. Install the drivers from the CD. (it didn’t work on (2) 2003 Server machines)
2. Connect the cube to the PC via USB.
3. Update the firmware using the downloaded software.

I’m on 0.9.1.5. Personally, I have no problem playing any format (haven't tested mkv). That’s the only thing that works without issues. Even xvids which are problematic for my PC...
My question is about the transfer speed over the network. It takes more than 30 (!) minutes to transfer a 4.35 GB file from a PC to the cube! Is anyone managing to transfer faster?
The PC's NIC is 100Mb, I changed the settings to forced full duplex etc., but there’s no difference... Transferring the same file to a Synology drive takes 7 minutes...

(UPS came to pick up my HDD this morning) heading to Digitest Germany!  I noticed that there is sometimes an issue when connecting it to the PC via USB! actually, you need to turn on the HDD first BEFORE connecting it to the PC! (I read that somewhere in the manual)  the only thing I complain about this HDD is that there's no built-in tuner (that would have saved me from pulling out my old VCR to have two tuners) (because at the same price there are a lot of DVD recorders with HDD AND HDMI output) well, we have a YUV output!! nevertheless, I find it better in my TV cabinet (I feel like I have 2 Wiis lol) otherwise the manual should be more complete regarding the different connections (like connecting the video-in cables to the output of the VCR and the video-out cables to the back of my flat screen) it took me a while to figure out the right connection.

Good evening everyone!   I bought a moveicube-r from materiel.net and a 320GB Western Digital hard drive in SATA 2.   I just received everything and I've tried to follow the instructions in the 4 pages of this topic but I'm not able to do it.   I managed to create the _RESERVED_ partition of 188 MB with a lock.txt file inside, but that's it.  The moviecube is still not recognized!   What procedures should I follow?   I formatted the hard drive completely in NTFS and then created two partitions of 191 GB and 106 GB in FAT32.  I also tried leaving the drive empty  I also tried formatting everything in NTFS  I also tried creating a 200 MB (203.4) partition in FAT16 named _RESERVED_ or RESERVED   Nothing works, it is not recognized. I tried on two other PCs, still the same!   What am I doing wrong?   Do you have a solution to fix it?   Should I launch the firmware by selecting the language or should I wait for the moviecube to be plugged in and go into standby mode?   Does anyone have a complete procedure? I found what was wrong: my external card reader! Indeed, I have a SD, MMC, CF etc. card reader that was conflicting with the USB of the moviecube.  I therefore formatted the entire disk in fat32, then rebooted and unplugged the card reader and it found the moviecube!  If this can help!

Hello everyone,  From what I see, this product has many shortcomings. I just bought it, and I had a hard time getting it to work. And there are still times when there are bugs. I bought a movie cube with a built-in hard drive, but I don't know if I should install the firmware as you do. The computer recognized the cube, but connecting it is a whole procedure: 1. connect the power supply of the cube 2. wait for it to go into standby 3. turn on the cube (wait 30 seconds) 4. connect the USB cable to the computer 5. wait another 20 to 30 seconds for the computer to recognize it.  I find that for a hard drive it is not very practical or simple to use, given the advertising on the box.... ;) Some of my movies are not playing (a purple screen appears): I think it's a codec problem. When I create folders, the remote control stops working when I switch to the TV. It needs a single file as a source for it to work. This is nonsense, and considering the price, I find it outrageous. Hello,  I just received mine, and I had the same problem as some of you: disk not recognized by the firmware installer.  The reason was the same on the 2 PCs I tried: one Vista and one XP. The procedure that works is as follows: Install the drivers from the CD provided with the Movie-Cube. Nothing happens after the installation, but that’s normal. Reboot the PC Start the Movie Cube and wait until everything turns off except for the status light Plug in the USB cable. A USB disk is detected. Be careful, Windows uses the Microsoft driver and not the EMTEC driver because it considers that the driver provided by EMTEC is not compatible :-( Just change the USB disk driver to the Genesys Logic driver via the device manager. Windows will announce an incompatibility that you should ignore.  Launch the firmwareInstaller and follow the procedure in the file "Help for Firmware Installer with Movie Cube purchase without hard drive" provided with the firmware.  Please be careful if you have never touched the device manager; be very careful with what you do.  Best regards,  Gwai77

Use Norton Partition Magic to partition the HDD with the Linux option and you will be surprised because it works. The problem is that the Movie Cube works in Linux, so it needs a partition dedicated to Linux, whereas Windows XP partitions HDDs in NTFS. This morning, I used Norton to partition the HDD in Linux mode and EUREKA it works as mentioned in the EMTEC documentation. Your message tells me that you are a novice in computer science, so I will try to simplify the procedure to get the Movie working, and believe me, it works very well. I will even go further; it's a true little computer that only runs on "LUNIX," and that's its uniqueness.  First of all, LINUX or UNIX (and many other variants) is an equivalent to WINDOWS; it's what is often called an operating system that manages, for example, inputs or outputs like mouse, serial card, USB card, and of course, the hard drive....  Now, the "MOVIE-CUBE" is managed by the "LINUX" operating system, like most small systems such as laptops, digital frames, and many more.  You should know that WINDOWS has the drawback of imposing its operational modes, particularly the need for partitioning and formatting hard drives (NTFS), which are not compatible with the MOVIE-CUBE. And that's why not much happens once you have executed the firmware of EMTEC.  My procedure involves partitioning and formatting the hard drive under LINUX or UNIX of the MOVIE CUBE and then executing the firmware of EMTEC under WINDOWS XP. Having NORTON PARTITION MAGIC 8.0 at my disposal, this software running under WINDOWS allowed me to partition and format the hard drive of the MOVIE CUBE as a bootable LINUX disk (default LINUX EXT partitioning).  If you do not have this software, try to obtain it somehow; otherwise, do you have an acquaintance who can partition and format your disk under UNIX?  I would like to point out that you can obtain "LINUX" on the internet for free, but be careful, as it might be a bit too complicated, especially for you.  If that's not the case, I don't really know how to explain another way for you to achieve satisfaction.  Try free or demo software, or PIRA..... I dare not say.  Keep me posted  Best regards

Same here, I had a problem, the cube seemed to work but when I plugged it into the TV, nothing happened, as if I hadn't plugged anything in.  In fact, it was simply a connection issue, I tried it with the composite video cable (red/yellow/white) and not with the scart plug, and it worked.  Finally, I tried to get it working with the scart, I carefully looked at the manual to connect it (important, it turns out that the IN wires connect to the OUT sockets, and the OUT wires to the IN sockets (it’s not IN/IN OUT/OUT like I was doing before)).  And everything worked.  So, do make sure to check this point, or more generally, your problem might come from a small detail that you are so sure about that you don't question it. Really think to check everything, start from scratch by carefully following the manual, as if you really knew nothing at all about computers.   The same for connecting to the computer, the times for pauses and sleep mode are important to respect.   There you go, if this helps you... great.

Hello, I just purchased the EMTEC Movie Cube-R case with a pre-installed 500 GB Samsung HDD. (materiel.net) I had the same problem, here’s how I solved it: Connect the case via USB to the PC Assign a letter to the unallocated partition of the HDD in the case using the WinXp disk management Windows automatically recognizes the pre-formatted FAT32 partition. I run the executable FirmwareInstaller_EMTEC_V2.5.4_0823.exe that recognizes the case and offers to install the firmware. OK, quick copy of information to the case? and then a screen asking to unplug the USB cable and connect the case to the TV with the cable provided in the box. After 2 to 3 minutes of a black screen on the TV, a terse message informs me that the installation is in progress, which will take about 10 minutes (all in English) with graphics reminiscent of the first ATARI. After 10 minutes, everything stops on its own! I turn the case back on with the remote and, magically? everything works. I assure you that I didn’t do anything special. Each time I have the same problem, Windows correctly detects the new hard drive connected via USB, but the installer (FirmwareInstaller_EMTEC_V2.5.4_0823.exe) cannot find the Movie Cube.  The first time I had to unplug all USB connections from the computer except the Movie Cube + CD drive (inside the computer). The second time I had to unplug all USB connections from the computer except the Movie Cube + memory card reader (inside the computer).  In short, there is a conflict somewhere; I need to unplug as many things as possible, and it works.  Good luck.

Hello everyone,  I bought the movie cube-r 500Go. I had the same issue as many, no USB recognition on the computer for the firmware installation. I followed the instructions given in post 87 by emtec technical service (Using a USB key). It works great, the firmware installed itself. Since then, I connected the disk to my ethernet network via powerline and the movie cube is recognized by the computers on the network as a network disk, and it is possible to access the computers from the movie cube. So cool. Now EMTEC just needs to evolve its firmware to add additional features. I would like to suggest that EMTEC makes its firmware OPEN SOURCE so that Linux developers can bring lots of improvements to the movie cube and it will become a top product. I do have a small question, though. I am able to perform a complete firmware installation via USB stick. This installation reformats ALL the disks, erasing their contents. How can I then do a simple update without losing everything on the disk? I can't even imagine backing up over 300GB via USB (Knowing that everything will of course need to be transferred back afterwards).  Just a bit of additional information for the installation from a USB stick: You need to hold down the POWER button while plugging in the power supply. Only release the button 10 seconds later. Then wait several tens of seconds (the screen remains black but the light on the USB stick blinks), only then does the firmware installation screen appear.  Best regards  BV

For the firmware update, I've done 2 since I got my Emtec, and actually, you only lose the timeshift and recording partitions. The multimedia partition remains intact. Be sure to back up your recordings from the recording partition to keep them.  Otherwise, I agree with you, there's a lot of potential in networking, but Emtec needs to keep evolving its firmware!!! It's all good, everything works! I connected it to the network and it's really great, it plays everything without lagging, it's just awesome, a bit difficult to install but it's worth being patient. As for the USB disk recognition, you actually need to connect the hard drive, when it goes into sleep mode, plug in the USB, turn it on and then turn it off, and then the computer recognizes it, a bit of a hassle but now it’s on the network and I no longer need to do that. Regarding the updates, only the USB method works.  In conclusion, it's a great product!

Hello everyone, we had the same problem as everyone when we wanted to update the firmware: it showed MOVIE CUBE R NOT FOUND. We formatted the RESERVED disk in FAT32, then we restarted the firmware and it detected it. Proceed with the installation, then disconnect the USB and keep the movie cube powered on (IMPORTANT: do not disconnect or it won't work). Then connect it to the TV and the installation will take place. Wait 10 minutes. The movie cube R will turn off and then back on (a fixed EMTEC image for a few seconds, then the menu will appear). In fact, you just create a mount on your PC from the case:  for example, your case ip=10.10.10.2  then on your Windows XP Pro or Vista or 2000 Pro, you create a mount on Z: for example: (map a network drive)  \10.10.10.2\part1 for the multimedia partition. I forgot: check that on the firewall side of your PC everything is open to and from the box (afterwards you can choose only certain ports if you want to complicate things a bit)... And you can check by simply going to Start, Run, and entering "\10.10.10.2\" Normally, Windows Explorer should open on the box with part1 and part2... be careful, only part1 will be accessible. Part2 is one of the other partitions that will not be in NTFS or FAT32, so it will be unreadable for Windows (ufs, I think).  By the way, funny thing, by going to http://10.10.10.2 in your browser you’ll arrive at a web page... the one for the box... it's just an example of a calculation, but let's hope that EMTEC will get moving and create a nice little site for us.... why not a search engine or a file management system for the files present on the box. Afterwards, if some web developers get involved, it's just a site in HTML with the possibility of adding CGI that encapsulates shell since the box is managed by a modified Linux (busybox)!!!  As mentioned, if EMTEC opens its source code, and if tinkerers get to work, this box could become a real gem!!! (and I have no shares in EMTEC... on the contrary, I think they are slow to evolve their firmware!!!! and their box is not perfect yet! far from it! but it has a good foundation!)    Ciao  Fred

I see that many people have the same questions... Let's do a little summary since I installed it two days ago and I've indeed encountered quite a few problems as described in the previous messages.

1) THIS DEVICE IS "SLOW TO WAKE UP" if you know what I mean! It’s not a USB stick or an HDD that you can just plug in and think you can play with in 3 seconds flat. So, in fact, as someone has already pointed out, when using it with your PC, don't plug in the USB cable right away! Turn on the Cube, wait at least 30 seconds, then plug in the USB cable... miracle, it will be recognized! WARNING: your HDD must have been already used beforehand! If you plug it in for the first time, you need to have prepared it with its Firmware beforehand!!! NB: the Cube is "off" when used with a PC, but the drive(s) are recognized under XP without any problem and you can use it like any external HDD...

2) I specify that there is no need to format your hard drives!!! The Firmware, if you use the right one, will do everything for you! Stop stressing about wanting to format at all costs. Any update or installation erases the files already present on your drives since the Firmware... formats your drive each time! I installed a SATA-II Samsung 500Go directly from its packaging into the Cube then the Firmware (correct!) and it’s OK!

3) Let's talk about the Firmware: the one I downloaded from the EMTEC site failed! And I indeed had the unpleasant surprise that the Cube was not recognized when executing the Firmware. One solution: try another Firmware!!! I found another one that worked! As soon as the Firmware starts, it finds the Cube and you can then, step by step, give it the information you want! A little tip: don’t allocate more than 15% of your hard drive for recordings! You can easily copy your recordings to the Multimedia section, thus keeping maximum space for your files rather than having a huge space for recording without being able to use that disk space for storage!

4) I strongly advise you to be next to your TV at the same time as your PC when installing the Firmware because once the Cube's configuration is chosen, you need to unplug the Cube from the PC (USB cable) and plug it into the TV. Ideally: plug it into the TV from the start! When your Cube is connected via USB to your PC, the connection to the TV is blocked and that's normal! Once the USB cable is unplugged, the installation continues for 5 minutes with the TV plugged in, then your new toy is ready!

5) As I said at the beginning, it is true that sometimes this damn device doesn't want to turn off (with the remote or by pressing it). I suppose it's a programming bug...

6) Finally, let’s talk about "recording"... No TV tuner on it yet, so it definitely needs a video source to work. You can connect it to a VCR, DVD player, satellite or digital decoder. Of course, it’s impossible to record and watch something else! However, if you have a satellite or digital decoder, you can record with your TV off: program the Cube for a precise recording and your decoder to turn on at the same time and everything is fine! WARNING: another nuance of the Cube... if you connect the Cube only to your decoder, you won’t be able to access the Cube's menu until you turn off your decoder!!! The ideal: connect it to your decoder in composite with a SCART connector and connect it with YUV + audio connectors to your TV if your TV allows it! This way you can have the Cube available without having to turn off your decoder (switching inputs on your TV to access either one, of course!).

That's what I can tell you based on my limited experience with it, but in any case, I'm very happy with it! Once set up and installed on my TV, I put 300 movies in it and now it’s a real treat without having to bother with burning DVDs to watch my Divx. Plus, you can "feed" it with a USB stick or another external hard drive very easily, just plug them into the back on one of the two ports and off you go!

I hope I have shed some light on some of you. Good luck, it's worth it!

Well, I personally bought a movie cube at the supermarket with a hard drive and it worked right away. After checking, I returned it for a refund and ordered a movie cube without a hard drive and a 500GB hard drive online. Conclusion: I saved 50 euros and gained 100GB more. For the installation, I had no problems. Just follow the instructions in the manual. For the network settings, no issues: I access and watch movies on my PC via Wi-Fi (through a router connected via Ethernet) and I can read and write from my PC to the movie cube. The only downside is indeed the slowness of the menus and the fact that my TNT amplifier remote also controls the movie cube (which turns back on when I flip channels). In short, it's a really good product that I highly recommend.  PS: I tried other very reputable brand hard drives, and the movie cube ended up in my living room :-)

Hello everyone, my Firmware version is v.0.9.15 and inside, the FirmwareInstaller EMTEC is v.2.5.4_0823. I'll say it again: THE FIRMWARE DOWNLOADED FROM THE EMTEC SITE DID NOT RECOGNIZE MY CUBE!!! Please reread my previous message and it should be fine! Good luck!!!   Summary:  1) Do not format your hard drive! It’s useless! If you have already fiddled with it, leave it as is...  2) Place the cube connected to a TV next to your PC.  3) Turn on the cube without connecting it via USB to your PC! The "EMTEC" signal should be visible on your TV even if your Cube has not been installed!  4) after a minimum of 30 seconds, connect it via USB to your PC: you don’t care if your PC doesn’t recognize it! IT’S THE FIRMWARE THAT WILL FIND IT!!! Note: the connection to your TV is cut off because USB takes priority!  5) Launch the FirmwareInstaller.exe program  6) The Firm should find the Cube immediately and then install your HDD as you wish. Again, no more than 15% allocated for recording!  7) The Firm programs the Cube and then tells you to unplug the USB cable. Remove the USB plug (this is when the signal to the TV resumes), then see what it displays on your TV. At first: blue/white screen with EMTEC written on it (as stated in point 3) and nothing happens: THIS IS NORMAL! Wait about twenty seconds... the screen turns yellow and the Cube finishes its update with a message "Wait 10 minutes"... once ready, the screen goes black... your Cube is ready for new adventures!

For piedpied:  On Rapidshare, there are two columns on your screen: the left one insists on getting a paid Premium account (direct downloads, faster etc...) otherwise the right column indicates "free". You need to click there and wait the required time (since you’re not paying, you have to wait a certain amount of time). Then, a new page appears and you have to copy the 5 large characters in the box just below, then you can finally save the file on your PC. It seems complicated but try it, it’s not! 1) Do not format the hard drive!!!!  2) NEVER in NTFS, always in FAT32 if the frantic urge to format takes you again I'm not making this up, it's in the manual that came with it...  3) it's normal that you had 2 disks, but not "hard" since you have 1 hard disk with 2 distinct partitions... When you use the firmware update, the program asks you if you want one or two partitions. It's up to you to choose...  4) small advice: read what other members have written before posting a message that has already been mentioned several times...  Good luck...

I think the idea suggested by one of the posts to make the firmware open-source is a great one, but will EMTEC accept it? Here are my wishes:  - accents: you said it  - search engine (like what you'd find at Creative): by artist / by album... etc...  - Queue list: a list of tracks programmed for the future. Different from a playlist, as it is constantly renewed. Example: I start playing track A, it's in progress, I browse through a different directory to track B and think! I would like to listen to track B next: hop, I add it to a queue list and it plays as soon as A is finished... Of course, it gets cleared upon shutdown. I insist, it's different from a playlist. (A queue list of 5 tracks would be nice)  - I personally have issues with upscaling: the image becomes blurry. But if someone has tested it?  - possibly synchronizing subtitles with the ability to offset them by x or y seconds in increments. (Available at Storex).  - reduce the size of the file icons at the bottom to fit a few more...  There are other things I can't think of right now... That's it, we're talking about little extras that would make it the ultimate box! (well at a very reasonable price...)   Fred

I had the same problems as you and I solved them you can read the procedure below, a copy of a review on ru...........ce.com  emtec is very tricky at first, but then it works smoothly!! 3 stars because it’s too hard to install!! my girlfriend would have sent it back immediately by herself!! I was about to do it too, but after a good consultation of different forums and especially the installation manual! otherwise, delivery was perfect on time!! the installation is subtle. I ordered it with a 400GB Samsung SATA HDD, I unpacked it, plugged it directly into the TV, the emtec homepage opens and then nothing!!! I think of updating the firmware that I download from the emtec site, I go through the firmware installation guide, I follow the procedure but my PC doesn’t detect anything!! I am on Windows unattended. I look in the file explorer but I only see a partition called "reserved" of 188MB (WHICH MUST ABSOLUTELY NOT BE TOUCHED) but after a good few hours visiting various forums, I decide to format the disk using the Windows disk manager, in that manager, I see 388GB of unformatted free space, I choose to format this partition in NTFS as soon as it’s finished, my PC detects a new partition, I restart the installer I previously downloaded which now recognizes the movie cube and offers two choices either to reset or proceed, I choose to reset to set everything back to factory settings and it just asks me to plug it into the TV to finish the installation, my TV not being near the PC, I disconnect the HDD and reconnect it to my TV!! something not to do, cutting the power cancels all previous operations!! so I move the TV and I restart the procedure with the HDD connected to the TV and the PC at the same time (which is recommended by the installation manual if you read it well before starting anything!!!) so for me, here it is, I still installed the setup on the CD supplied with the HDD (you never know) connected to the PC and TV and launched the firmware downloaded from emtec and see if the PC detects the movie cube, if so, click NEXT and not reset, and then the procedure for choosing recording and multimedia storage partitions starts, click on finish at the end and disconnect the USB cord; the installation begins on the TV for about 10 minutes, the HDD goes to sleep at the end, turn it off and disconnect the power, reconnect it, wait 30 seconds, turn on the HDD and the menu screen appears with the functions described in the manual. If the PC does not detect the movie cube through the installer, go format the free space with the disk manager in FAT32, it’s better than NTFS if there’s no choice, disconnect and reconnect the USB cord of the HDD (preferably on the back of the PC, better powered than the front one) and restart the installer after detecting the new partition in the file explorer. After that, the product is perfect, recording and playing all formats simple to navigate aesthetically, only downside of all these types of products are the audio playlist!!! there’s no choice by genre, artist, or album to manage these playlists, it remains unit selection and it’s very long, but apart from that, it’s great!! it’s worth it!!

I have the HMR 300 from COMET LAB, which is the same device, so the same explanations in the FAQ and probably the same firmware personally, I have a 320 Go from Western Digital (note that it does not accept all brands, see the explanations on this link: http://france.cometlabs.com/...   and the firmware on this link: http://france.cometlabs.com/...  You need to format in FAT 32, so since this one only supports partitions of a maximum of 64 Go, I had to make 5. for this I used Partition Magic 8, you can also use the free software: Swiss Knife (4.34 Mo) in my case everything works well, except for the SD card reader which has never worked on a first HMR 300, and worked for a day on a second one (after return) but, since the USB and recording mode work well, it's not very annoying. So here it is you put yourself on video in and normally you see your video source connected to video in behind the emtec then you press timeshift, it displays preparing and then livepause you press rec (red button) on the remote and the recording starts then you press guide and start your music through the browser it works perfectly for me remember to wait each time you press a button on the remote the only problem I had was that the red recording LED stays on but I think it's because I didn't wait long enough after stopping the recording the red stop record logo stayed displayed on the screen for a while when stopping the recording and I thought it was bugging but after a few dozen seconds it returned to normal

I'm not sure.  In fact, from the box, we see the multimedia partitions mounted in vfat.  But when running a ulimit -f, we can see that busybox supports unlimited file sizes.  The problem comes from the application that reads the data, because from a USB hard drive in NTFS, files larger than 2GB are visible, but when we try to open them, the emtec reboots... so it's the application that has an issue. Well, it can be fixed via software, so I hope that emtec, which hasn't been updated in a while, will release a good firmware for us...   Bye  Fred

Well, to move things along and not say just anything: I took a DVD from a set-top recorder, made an ISO of it, almost 8GB... the player reads it without any issue: menu and chapters via LAN. So it handles files larger than 2GB well... I don't understand about my other file which is a HD extract... I'll check the codecs, and see with another AVI file larger than 2GB... So we'll see... Good evening  I bought an Emtec Movie Cube -R hard drive and a separate 500 GB hard drive, which I had to assemble myself,  but the problem is that it does not detect the hard drive  when I launch the firmware and start the search, it shows me sorry! check pvr-box magic no fail! read error  and for the TV, it's the same, I have the yellow page and the blue lines, everything is fine up to that point, but then it also says error... Let's set the record straight: the case handles files over 2GB... my file was "corrupted"... after repair, it is read fine by the case. However, on another file I had an issue with an unsupported GMC message. Apparently, the chip does not handle qpel and the gmc of xvid.... like other players. So the case really has potential... :) A firmware update to read mkv in avc1 or x264 and this case would be top notch!  Fred

As for me, I got involved here at the beginning of November after buying a MovieCubeR + 500GB HDD from Topachat, I couldn't get anything to work (tried on 4 different PCs and under different versions of Windows). I also tried all kinds of formatting and it didn't help. I contacted Emtec's customer service, who told me it could be the motherboard of the Cube that is malfunctioning since it doesn't work following the procedure. Anyway, back to Topachat, after a long wait, Topachat having sent the Cube back to Emtec, I was informed that it was faulty and I was refunded (that's the short version because I had to pay high phone bills with Topachat's customer service (who tell you one thing and do another)) Not discouraged, I ordered another Cube + 500GB HDD which I received last Saturday, and there, by following what was explained above (classic method via PC and not via USB stick) and especially without rushing, everything worked the first time!!! (I used the firmware downloaded from rapidshare)  I followed Zours' method: -so don't be in a hurry -not too much space for recording (15% is indeed enough) -be careful, what's indicated on the supplied SCART cables corresponds to the cable and not the box: if it says "OUT", meaning output, it is the output of the SCART, so the TV, so it connects to the "IN" socket = input of the Cube!!! it may seem silly but it’s logical and can sometimes be confusing!!!  To finish, thanks Zours and search well but for my part, my first Cube seemed to have a problem since even though I was less patient I did almost the same thing and it didn’t work. So let's hope there isn't a series of defective Cubes!!  @Tchao Steve PS: good ideas for firmware improvements (there's still a need!!!)

I just received a response from EMTEC after calling them last night. The answer = nothing more than what is in the manual, a ready-made response that does not correspond to my request.  When I connect the movie cube R with the Samsung 500 GB SATA 2, 7200 RPM hard drive that I assembled because it was sold separately, it goes well. In My Computer, the new hard drive RESERVED L appears with 188 MB free.  But after several attempts, carefully following the instructions for installing the embedded software of the movie cube R, a window appears with: 1st step "Check your movie cube" "Searching for the movie cube" with another window indicating "......Read Error" and it doesn’t go any further ???  Despite that, I can copy files from my computer to the movie, and then play the movie on the computer, everything works fine. But I only have 188 MB of capacity? and I have nothing when connecting it to the TV.  I don’t know what to do anymore? I’m waiting to see if you have a solution.  Thank you  J-C

Hello everyone The valiant users of the Movie Cube R from Emtec could let me know if any of the existing bugs from the version released in the fall have been fixed?  Let me explain: I bought this device upon its release, with Firmware 9.11, and a 250 Go pre-installed hard drive. It recorded and played back fairly well, but with several defects: 1) Some commands from the remote control are misinterpreted. Especially on fast forward: you press several times to switch to x2, x4, x8, x16, and when you press Play to return to normal playback, the device jumps to x 32, as if you had pressed FF again. Very annoying! Same issue with the navigation arrows: pressing the Right Arrow several times followed by the Left Arrow, and the device continues to move right! 2) During fast forward, the time counter becomes inaccurate or freezes. 3) In fast forward, the device stubbornly skips certain passages, by 5 or 10 minutes. I have the impression it skips at certain chapter points (placed every 15 or 20 minutes). Very annoying! 4) During editing work, the time counter with numbers is replaced by a very imprecise progress bar. 5) During editing work, when cutting a video file in two, the cut sometimes occurs 2 to 10 minutes earlier! You have to be careful and splice instead of removing. Dangerous, annoying, what a waste of time! 6) You can only merge two contiguous files in the list. 7) When I tried to connect it via USB to my PC to download a firmware update, it repeatedly "tripped the breakers" (recent circuit breaker, maybe sensitive, but it has never tripped in 5 years, despite many devices plugged in!). I tried with a laptop: the USB connection went well as long as the laptop was on battery. But when I connected it to the mains, everything tripped again!  The Emtec customer service replied courteously over the phone. A technician suggested a blown filter on the Movie Cube to explain the 7th defect and proposed an exchange. Pixmania took the device back, sent it to customer service. Two weeks later, I received another one, supposedly a new one. It exhibited exactly the same defects. There is improvement... I've followed the procedure with the USB key on the EMTEC site and after 10 minutes it works!! I haven't tested everything yet... but I think I'm on the right track!! 1- Get a USB key 2- Download the Firmware from the EMTEC website 3- Unzip it on your PC, then copy the 9 files in the DATA folder to the root of your USB key 4- Then create a file "part".txt with this inside (for a 500GB hard drive only, for other capacities, see the EMTEC site) udf:res ext3:512 swap:128 udf2:8192 fat32:176333 fat32:176333 5- Save this file to the root of your key 6- Connect your Movie to your TV (to see that the installation works) with the SCART (be careful with the connection, make sure to respect the colors, etc...) 6- Insert your USB key into one of the ports of your Movie Cube-R 7- At the same time, plug in the power to the movie and press the On button for about 5 seconds 8- A message will appear on your TV screen: "Installation, do not unplug the power or disconnect the USB key for about 10 minutes" 9- After these 10 minutes, you can navigate via the icons... 10- Connect the USB port to your PC and after about 30 seconds, you'll see our 3 partitions appear _RESERVED_ of 188MB, and 2 others of 172MB each 11- All that's left is to copy files and try I'll keep you updated if the rest works See you!

I am both satisfied and disappointed...  Satisfied because it has a good foundation, and so far, aside from the initial setup, nothing is really off-putting. It has good features (especially the audio navigation with the ability to skip forward/backward with the right/left buttons, as well as next chapter/previous chapter to jump through multiple directories... that's really great). The networking, copying, and streaming are very nice!  And disappointed because for some time now, Emtec has stopped providing firmware updates, and disappointed because there have been no improvements regarding the firmware, and it's a shame that we don't have more information about the chip used... to see if the inability to play AVC1 or x264 (HD) files is a software or hardware issue...  By the way, I admit I’m a bit lazy and especially fearful, but if someone hasn't assembled their case and HDD yet, could they take a look and note the chip reference? (I remember having a lot of trouble sliding my HDD into the case because of the SATA cable, by the way...) So if someone who still has the case without an HDD could note the reference, that would be awesome :) (since support has been silent since their intervention :( That's a downside!)   Fred

Good evening,  I recently received the Emtec box and the separate 500 GB hard drive. I happily struggled with the firmware initialization and took advantage of your various posts to avoid mistakes and know what to do. My problem was the lack of a line break at the end of the part file! Thank you to whoever found that out! I was specifically careful not to include any stray characters... :)  For the rest, everything works with the inherent ups and downs of this kind of device, particularly a rather whimsical ergonomics.  My current issue is with the programming. I can't seem to use the "vps" function in "programmer recording"  The ready function does start the box, but it doesn't go back to standby after recording ends. For the vps function, when it's activated, it completely crashes the box (the front remains permanently lit, and no button has any effect, while the video on the television starts, stops, etc... quite strange... has anyone experienced this? (firmware version 09.15)

Hi everyone, I installed mine yesterday and like everyone else: what a hassle!!!  Purchase on topachat with a hard drive delivered separately (to assemble yourself)  First step recognition via USB with the PC --> OK Second step install of firmware 0.9.15 -> OK Third step setting it up on the TV and formatting -> OK Fourth step reconnected via USB to the PC -> the hassle begins, impossible to see the movie cube R!!!  So I proceeded with the method (post 80): install via a USB stick but the installation crashes during formatting...  Put the movie cube R back on the PC: still no recognition via USB  Finally thanks to "fekaraboss" I turned on the movie cube R with the front button, then I held it down for a few seconds to turn the movie cube R off and there miraculously Windows finds the movie cube R, the "RESERVED_" partition and those dedicated to multimedia appear.  Conclusion, I feel like the recognition via USB is different when the hard drive is empty and when the hard drive is formatted. When the hard drive is empty, as described in the manual, it's enough to power on the movie cube R, wait for it to go into standby, connect the USB cable and wait for the PC to see it... Whereas once formatted, you have to do the same thing, but then turn it on with the front button, and hold it so it goes back into standby and then the partitions appear in Windows.  There you go, if this can help...  Once it works, it's a great product, but I don't understand why such products are so hard to install, I had a hard time and I've been in IT since 1994, so I can't imagine how people who know nothing would manage..!!!

After researching on the internet, the VPS function is not operational in France but the PDC function is used only on France 5/Arte. I do not know if VPS/PDC are strictly compatible. The principle is to adjust the programming duration based on information transmitted via teletext. For more details, see here: http://www.graffiti-online.org/articles/003-2000/vps.html.  Moreover, since it is not a tuner but a simple video signal, I do not think this signal contains the necessary PDC/VPS information. I still tried the VPS mode by sending the video signal from 5/Arte... no change.  For the rest, I have a few problems, including lock-ups of the Emtec, no shutdown of the Emtec after a scheduled recording, etc.  Does the VPS mode work for other users? Does the program mode properly turn off the Emtec after the scheduled duration? Do others have the same problem?  Over to you!

Hello everyone,  I have recently acquired this multimedia hard drive, and the lack of support for accented characters in subtitles is extremely bothersome. So I contacted customer service, here are their responses:  "Regarding this issue, it may be a settings problem: please check in "set up"-"language"-"Text encoding" if you have selected the correct character type."  Of course, that wasn't it. Yet, they persist:  "try: ‘Setup’ -> ‘Language’ -> ‘Text Encoding’ -> ‘Western’."  Another failure. Since then, I received this response:  "would it be possible for you to send us a file illustrating the subtitle issue?"  I sent them an .srt file (created by me, containing only words with accents and "ç") with instructions for them to read it with one of their .avi videos. Regarding the subtitle management, I think I have tried everything, modifying them using the excellent free software Subtitle Workshop, adjusting the language menu in every way possible, and it's messing up with the accents, and not just that. The display durations of the subtitles are incorrect: for example, a subtitle meant to display for 1.2 seconds only shows for a fraction of the scene, not long enough to read it. Embarrassing... Connected to my network through my box, I see 2 partitions: one that we can access and one that we cannot since it’s for recording. My problem is that I have 2 PCs running XP, and both see both partitions well, even the 3rd PC running Vista only sees one partition, the one we cannot open. Does anyone have this problem? Hello everyone,  I have been following this forum's discussion with great interest.  I have had the movie cube for a week now, purchased with an internal drive, to avoid issues. I opted for the 160 GB model as I don't have big needs.  Why the movie cube: to replace the old VCR on one hand, and to be able to play (especially audio) files in our living room.  I am absolutely thrilled with this equipment, as I find it simple (at least I do), and it works very well, plus I was delighted with the presence of the optical fiber!  However, I agree with you on the things that aren't right:  - it's a pity there isn't a system like iTunes, Winamp, or Songbird to sort audio.  - and the major flaw of the device is the scheduled recording: it wakes up at the programmed time, but does not go back to sleep afterwards... and that is rather annoying!  I did the update twice to see if it changed anything: via USB key or by USB connection between my PC and the cube, the symptom persists.  I sent a request to the Emtec digitest support, and I received a very terse response directing me to the FAQ, telling me to update the firmware, even though I specifically mentioned I was already up to date...  I'm super happy with the equipment, aside from the scheduled recording problem, but I'm very disappointed with this terse response. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Emtec continues to update the firmware...

Phew!!! It finally works so here it is, after going through all the messages... NOTHING!!! I could already see myself sending this junk back the PC: nothing (a whole afternoon trying to get the Cube recognized) (tried formatting in all formats...) for the update via the USB key with part.txt and all: nothing "install error" after a maximum of 15 bars on the TV (with different keys, it was the same) also tried via the SD reader with SOME SD cards: nothing like with the keys. I even formatted my PC and reinstalled a base XP: waste of time STILL NO CUBE FOUND.... Since I have 2 PCs, I tried on the other one and then it worked, here is my procedure: -remove all USB peripherals connected to avoid conflicts -install the driver provided on the EMTEC CD -plug the cube into the mains, wait for standby, then connect the USB behind the PC -it asked me for the driver and I went to target the EMTEC CD -launched the firmware ".exe" and HALLELUJAH cube found and followed the procedure as explained in the .doc when downloading the firmware and it's GREAT. My opinion: My 2 PCs have the exact same OS and are configured the same way, so for those like me who were desperate, I recommend trying on 1 or 2 other PCs (personally I think it comes directly from the detection of the USB ports depending on the motherboard) NB: NOT AT ALL necessary to format anything when the firmware installation is done it formats and structures everything by itself. kristof708.

When we record a show for example, it's possible to go to the RECLIST, see that this show is in "recording...." and we can of course play it and watch the show from the beginning.... Hello,  I'm having the same issue!!! Long live Emtec: I'm going to try customer service next week.  I just bought a Movie Cube -R with a separate 500GB Samsung SATA2 hard drive. I installed the drive inside and moved on to the firmware installation phase.  At first, I couldn't find the firmware on the CD that came with the hardware, so I went to this website to download it! I then tried the PC solution and the one with the USB stick, but neither worked! Can you please help me?  Here are my observations: my HDD is detected by Windows XP, but only with a capacity of 287MB (which is not much for a 500GB HDD!). The case lights up when I connect it to my PC, then goes into standby; Windows does recognize the new hard drive connected via USB!  However, when I launch the installer (FirmwareInstaller_EMTEC_V2.5.4_0823) to install the firmware (downloaded from the Emtec site), the software tells me that the movie cube-r is not connected! I tried the operation with the data present on my computer's HDD and then with the data on the movie cube-R HDD: nothing works!  I then disconnected and reconnected it several times (as suggested if it is not detected), ... I reformatted the HDD in FAT32 still without success and no improvement in the HDD capacity! I then tried the operation with the USB stick and the movie cube-R connected to the TV, but it still doesn't work and no installation screen appears on the TV.  Do you know how to make the firmware installer detect that the case is properly connected? Why isn't the capacity of my HDD showing 500GB?  Thanks in advance to all the good-hearted people  Fab

Hello,  I bought my Movie Cube (MC) the same way (bare drive + 500GB HDD), and I had the same kind of problem as you, but I resolved it much more quickly than others on the forum, and I think it's best to reach out to them.  As for me, I simply restarted the PC once the MC was detected by Windows (while keeping everything plugged in). Once restarted, my PC no longer detected the MC, so I pressed the button on the MC and waited (it can take a while, and you might need to press it again after some time)... and voila, it was detected by Windows, and I launched the Firmware.exe which successfully detected the MC.  As I said, I don’t think it’s exactly the same problem, but hey, it doesn’t hurt to try. Sorry for my not-so-precise explanations, but I don't really remember what I did...  Good luck!

I completely agree with whassup69  1) Be patient! 2) Speak and write in a language understandable by everyone (especially avoid SMS language and the like)  Well, since I'm in a good mood and for those who are struggling and are "impatient", I'll summarize my experience:  1) Be patient because the times are often longer than those announced (disk detection by Windows, startup in firmware update mode, etc.)  2) No need to format the disk if we are doing a firmware installation/update via USB key  3) The firmware installation via USB key works but not necessarily on the first try (some solved the problem by changing USB keys, etc.) For me, it worked when a line break was added at the end of the "part" file  4) The detection of the two partitions by Windows doesn't matter as long as the firmware is not installed (in the case of installation via USB key of course)  5) Like Fab, I have never found the software to install the firmware via PC/USB!!!  6) I’ve had it for two weeks now and I’m quite satisfied except for the operational hiccups (bugs and whimsical ergonomics!) hello everyone  Just a clarification, the installation method for firmware 0.9.15 via USB through the TV, I just followed Fredncyc's advice, that is to say, in the PART.TXT file you just need to put the data equivalent to the size of the hard drive. I confirm that the speed is indeed around 3 MB/s or 25 Mb/s  This doesn't seem too bad to me.   The speed over WiFi (to complement a previous post) is generally quite poor.  Without comparing to the Emtec, I had the opportunity to perform a transfer via WiFi (with the transmitter being 2 meters away) between two PCs. I noticed that the speed was ten times lower! ! Hello Galériens   The part file goes in the USB method   Indeed, the way you write the part file is very important; there should be no spaces at the end of the line. At the end of each line, you should only press enter to go to the next line, as Jad_10 indicated. Then, at the end of the file, you should finish with a carriage return (go to the next line with the enter key) as someone else indicated (sorry, I can't remember who) in another post. Regarding the saving process, Jad_10 is right again; you should avoid creating a part.txt.txt file, that's why his saving method is reliable. I don’t know if you had already installed the firmware or not. I had nothing installed, so I proceeded with the installation using a USB key with some issues described above (file part, type of USB key, etc.) but in the end, once the firmware is installed, it works "normally" apart from the functioning constraints already mentioned here several times. The easiest way is to follow the "Emtec" procedure   it is functional.  Be careful with the part file (refer to post 216 by jad) which is very precise (almost too much!)   The USB key must be plugged into one of the ports at the back of the Emtec   Be careful with switching to "upgrade" mode, which doesn’t always trigger on the first try. This is due to the fact that the standby / operation and shutdown mode of the Emtec isn't always very "clear". By taking your time, you can get it!   It is useful to connect the Emtec to a television to see what is happening.   When the process starts, you see a yellow (ugly) screen with blue bars scrolling |||||| (about 1/sec) this should scroll regularly. If it stops (1 full scroll and 3 bars), it is "normally" your "part" file that is not good. In this case, you need to stop the Emtec and double-check the content of the "part" file, "notably a line break at the last line.   If you can't start the process, it's either at the "update" stage that isn’t happening or a problem with the USB key or missing files at the root.   Good luck.   Best regards  Fredncy

tezukaboy, calm down...  If you are installing via USB flash drive, you need to connect your R cube to the TV; do not connect it additionally to the PC via USB.  Moreover, doing the process via USB flash drive is essentially the same as installing the firmware with the PC. So, you should not use both methods as you did; it's either one or the other.  With the USB flash drive and by connecting the cube to the TV, we see that the cube formats the data partition, which must have been done in your case since you see a K partition.  If your K drive is 219 GB, that should be normal, as the "reserved" partition is about 188 GB.  HERE are the visible capacities on the data partition (gathered from the EMTEC site) EMTEC Movie Cube R Visible capacity on PC or MAC 160 GB 99 GB max. 250 GB 149 GB max. 320 GB 229 GB max. 400 GB 288 GB max. (2 partitions of 144GB max.) 500 GB 358 GB max. (2 partitions of 179GB max.) 750 GB 538 GB max. (2 partitions of 269GB max.) 1 TB 710 GB max. (2 partitions of 355GB max.)  So, at this point, I think you have succeeded in installing the firmware and that your R cube is functional. Just try to now put a movie from your PC onto the K partition of the R cube.  See you!

Ouh laaaaaaa ! Original as a method!  As Tac7 says, calm down, it's almost quite simple and it seems you've mixed everything up... but fortunately, it seems to have "worked".  In fact, when you do the install with the USB key, you shouldn't keep your finger on the power button forever! It's just to switch to "update" mode (yellow screen on the television) and since you haven't apparently connected the TV, you couldn't see it happen!  Without downloading a movie, you can already power it up and navigate through the menus and such by connecting your TV to it!  Connect the provided cables marked 'in' to the 'out' ports of the Emtec.  Good luck with it.  Best regards, Fred

Oh dear, I can't take it anymore... I bought the Emtec movie cube-r case without a hard drive because I already had a 120GB SATA hard drive. As soon as I plugged in the case with the hard drive inside, Windows recognized everything and installed the driver directly, so no problem there. Then it gets complicated with the firmware... I downloaded it from the Emtec website and when I tried to install it, a MsgBox popped up with the message "Sorry! Check pvr-box magic no fail! Read Error." So I’m not quite sure what that means... But apparently, from the messages left on the previous pages, it is said that the partition must be formatted in FAT32. Using Partition Magic, I formatted my partition in FAT32 but when I launch the firmware, the same message appears... I'm getting desperate!!! P.S.: The _RESERVED_ partition was created automatically when the driver was installed...

For tac7. The RESERVED partition is 188MB... it's a small Linux of the busybox type... even Vista doesn't need that much space... let's say that Windows 2010 will probably take up that much....  Anyway, on a 320GB hard drive, I have 290GB left because I've allocated a minimum for the timeshift (I won't be using it) and let's say 16GB for recording... So if you have 219GB left, tezukaboy, it's because you've allocated "a lot" of space for the timeshift and recording. I imagine this comes from the part.txt set by default in the procedure via the USB key.  We'll try again...  1 / power up your emtec  2 / start it with the power button on the front panel  3 / it will turn on, count to 40  4 / connect the USB cable to the PC  5 / count to 20... the box should turn off on the front panel  6 / if it doesn't work, and the box stays on, briefly press the button to turn it off (but the disk must still be spinning).   For future buyers, considering that emtec is no longer responding on the firmware side, that support seems non-existent, it would be wise to look into other boxes and brands.... Personally, I have already bought it, I'm quite satisfied, let's say not unhappy enough to change, but if I had to do it again, with the experience I have from the box, I would look elsewhere... Too bad for emtec... all it takes is a beautiful façade (which is totally unusable by the way.... and yet I don't have big fingers... )... behind it, you need to follow the customer.  Fred

I understand that reading over 200 messages may be tedious, but I repeat, there is no need to format the hard drive first, and that a brand new / blank hard drive works perfectly after the firmware installation, of course.  For Bizoo, there is no pre-installed system on the hard drive (maybe after the firmware installation), but we don't care, it doesn't change anything.. :)  Your problem may come from the low capacity of the drive and/or the fact that it is not a SATA II (this is a hypothesis, not an assertion!).   For frederikk, I mostly agree with you regarding your comment:  Personally, I already bought it, I'm quite satisfied, let's say not unhappy enough to change, but if I had to do it again, with the experience I have of the case, I would look elsewhere...  On the other hand, the fact that Emtec is not responsive does not mean that the support is non-existent. I must say that they are not reactive, for sure... and that there are many weaknesses in the system. I would still be more confident because I have noticed that the Emtec is available for short periods... quite short actually, and that with each new availability period, a new firmware arrives... However, regarding the connectivity, my HDD is already a bit older, so yes, it’s probably just SATA! But in the EMTEC documentation about the enclosure, it’s nowhere mentioned that SATA 2 is absolutely required!.......  If it's better with the USB stick as just mentioned, then I will try that! Congratulations on reading everything.. but some posts contradict others and when it doesn't work "we" (myself included) try everything in every direction... and of course nothing works...

If there is a "real" problem, you should help us by telling us what the symptoms are!! Won't turn on, won't stop, nothing is running, no picture, etc.

The USB key procedure is, it seems to me, the simplest. The only difficulty is starting in "update" mode and that the file part.txt is "correct" as mentioned in several messages here.

You worry me a bit when you write "I copied the 10 files using Notepad" there is only one file to create with Notepad, which is the part.txt file.

Go back to Emtec's description for the procedure.
Everything that is written is accurate with two exceptions:

The indicated times are sometimes a bit longer or shorter.

Well, after abandoning any attempt to install it from the PC, I tried from the USB key and the TV then! As I have a 120GB SATA hard drive and not a 160GB one, I therefore adapted the partition values to about 60-65% of the disk size (for the part.txt file). This gives me the following file:  udf:res ext3:512 swap:128 udf2:4096 fat32:978000 (carriage return obviously)  I plug everything in, I follow the procedure as indicated, and oh joy, I see the nice yellow screen "Install begin" appear! I think, oh great, it's working (while thinking, uh wait, you never know) and indeed, after the loading of the first bar and 5-10 seconds after being told that it will take 10 minutes and not to remove the USB or POWER, well, I see displayed on the yellow screen a little less pretty now: "Install error! Please reboot"  Despite several attempts, the same problem occurs at the same moment...  HELP PLEASE!!!!

Well, this morning... I "had fun" renaming, cutting, and deleting the videos that were in the list section...

Everything went well and I was even happy with myself... :) because it actually takes some time!

Anyway, everything was fine... and then...
at the beginning of the afternoon, I wanted to record a show and that's when... nada, nothing...
The Emtec was shutting down and refused to switch to recording mode!

After several attempts, I checked the content of my list... nothing, empty...

It was as if the FAT of the recording partition was empty, dead, inaccessible...
On the other hand, the FAT32 partitions were normal and contained all their data!

Not knowing how to recover the recorded data, I chose to reinstall the Emtec!
And I lost my data from the two FAT32 partitions, but it was just copies.

Now, it's working "normally" again.

I suspect the data loss was due to the fact that the Emtec sometimes shuts down without being put on standby (main switch). I will be a bit more careful... but that's just a hypothesis!!

Ok. That reassures me a little :) especially since I never record.  Personally, I've had to turn off the emtec electrically 1 or 2 times at the beginning, purple screen, but for some time now it's been fine. I imagine it was due to unsupported formats. Once it happened while listening to music and navigating through the directories at the same time, whereas usually it doesn't cause any issues. In fact, when the emtec moves to the next song, by default it will go to the next song in the same directory if we're navigating in that same directory, but if we're in another directory, sometimes it behaves strangely. Hello, after searching the web, I found another multimedia HDD that records in MPEG 2.   The RIXID FG 1000 R for those who want to take a look.   Then on a forum, through a Google search, a guy (with reservations since he doesn't have this equipment) said he did the installation with the famous partitions in FAT 32, then deleted (or renamed) them to NTFS and that it works perfectly!   Sorry for intruding on your topic, but I’m following it closely with the aim of acquiring either the Emtec or the Rixid (I've sent emails to the customer service of the brands) to see if we can recover the videos without cutting them off related to the FAT 32 partition.   I hope for a vague response from them!

SUMMARY:  Installation via USB key, downloaded firmware, part file + 500GB text saved, 10 files on the key (+ existing file on a blank EMTEC 2GB key), connection cube TV/OK   THE PROBLEM:  After successfully passing the installation level that asks to wait 10 minutes, the installation freezes with the following message.  "INSTALL ERROR! PLEASE REBOOT"   I believe I understand there’s a boot issue!!! But I don’t know the exact problem and especially not the solution. When does this error appear?  When you turn on the Emtec after the installation is finished (the Emtec goes into standby at the end of the installation)  or before...?  For me, it's not guaranteed, but I think the problem occurs with the hard drive and/or the files on the USB stick that were not installed/started/copied correctly (the "compatibility" of the USB stick might be the issue... have you tried another USB stick?)  The Part.txt file is not the cause in your case (seemingly)  Have you tried the installation via PC?   Best regards Fredncy

Good evening fredncy,  The issue was in the process of installing  To resolve it, I indeed used another key. I FORMATTED it to FAT 32, so there was no file on it. I erased everything that was on the RESEVED partition and then restarted the installation from the beginning. And there, miracle or not, the installation via USB and TV control went correctly. Icons, option to set the language, date, etc.  When connecting it to the PC via USB cable, I see 3 new disks (partitions) visible from the PC (aside from the internal disks and partitions of the PC) 1st of 172 GO 2nd also of 172 GO 1 RESERVED 188 Mo IS THIS NORMAL? It seems strange to me; I thought I would get 2 partitions. One RESERVED 188 MO and the other multimedia!  I am currently stuck on the steps towards the PC, it seems to me that I need to launch the firmware and have it recognize the Cube for configuration from the PC!!???  Unless I'm mistaken (novice), I launch the firmware and there the Cube is not detected. Fatigue from the day certainly makes me doubt the actions taken and those I need to perform.  QUESTIONS/ 1/ Can you enlighten me on the information about the 3 partitions, is it normal? If not, your opinion please 2/ What should I do at the stage where I am (Cube to PC)  Thanks in advance.

Thank you, thanks to you I managed to replace the original 160 GB hard drive with a new SATA II 400 GB disk.   The only solution = use a USB key and make sure to add a line break at the end of the part.txt file that you create.   Be careful to hold the power button for a long time when powering on, do not release it until the USB key is fully lit and wait an additional 10 seconds after the hard drive display goes into sleep mode!! Hi everyone, after multiple attempts with my 200 GB hard drive, I finally managed to finalize it. At first, I couldn't install the normal firmware because it was compressed "folder to decompress." I formatted it to NTFS on my computer and then used the software again, and I installed the firmware so that the software would recognize it. I repeatedly unplugged the USB and the power supply. Then I followed the instructions, the longest part, and the initialization time on the TV was about 10 minutes. It seems to be working. As soon as I have more information, I will share it.

hello! After numerous installation issues with the movie cube, I finally managed to solve the problem. One piece of advice: unplug all USB devices from your PC (really, everything). Then everything runs smoothly with the PC. As for the latest firmware, I installed it yesterday, and there were no problems. It seems that the movie cube crashes less, especially during recording; the fanciful infrared commands seem to have been resolved, as now when you press a button on the remote, the blue LED no longer blinks. There is indeed a wireless menu, but it doesn’t find my network; I think adding a wireless USB adapter should work, but which one?? And for those interested, the installation doesn’t format your multimedia partitions, only the recordings made from your TV or satellite. It even keeps your network shortcuts and passwords. Just for your information, I even managed to connect 3 recording sources via a manual button selector with 4 inputs/1 output found for 20 euros. The preview of movies slowing down the browser is still not deactivatable, which is a shame, but I hope Emtec is considering this if they read this forum. Everything is now fine. The problem was simply a disconnected hard drive ribbon cable.  After restoring it to compliance, I transferred the firmware using the USB stick method.  Everything went as described in the procedure.  Now all that's left is to test the device.

I just bought a barebone case from materiel.net (they just received them). Surprise, there is an "emtec" USB key of 256Mo in the box containing firmware v2.0.3up. I installed my Seagate 320Go hard drive. I downloaded version v2.0.4up and put it on a USB key. So I proceeded with the installation using the USB method without any issues. I modified the part.txt file to increase the percentage of the fat32 partition.  I don't have time to test the case, but at first glance there are a lot of improvements compared to what I've read in this forum.

I tested the installation of the new firmware via USB stick (upgrading from 0.9.15 to 2.04UP). The installation went smoothly except that ... well, it reformatted everything and I lost everything I had on my 2 FAT32 partitions.  There is indeed a menu for Wi-Fi, but for now it doesn't seem to recognize my USB Wi-Fi stick.  However, there is a serious ISSUE. 9 times out of 10, or even 10 out of 10, when trying to access HDD1 or HDD2 through the BROWSER menu, when it displays the size of the disk and the volume, the display crashes and the system reboots. So to access your music, videos, etc., you have to cross your fingers; the disk becomes almost unusable. I might switch back to 0.9.15 (if I haven't already deleted it...) Hi,  Well, I followed your lead and created a single FAT32 partition, so it doesn't display the disk sizes and therefore doesn't crash.  However, I have some questions; I hope EMTEC also comes here on the forum and can respond.  Question 1: Which Wi-Fi key should be used on the movie cube R? I tried an APM and a TP-LINK but nothing worked. We can suppose that it needs an EMTEC one, but which one?  Question 2: An Ethernet connection on a D-LINK DES-1005D switch is not working. I will try with a crossover cable... but it works fine through a powerline adapter, so the problem is the switch??? Hello! I have the same 1005d switch and no issues with the straight cable. For TNT, I have a budget device from Leroimerlin and I use the Scart output with a cinch cable, as well as the Canal decoder with the Scart/cinch cable all going into a small manual switch box so I don't have to keep changing the plugs behind the TV. Then I come out of the TV and go to the screen. I don't have analog channels on my TV. See you! ----------------Sci

Response to question 2: The network works without any issues, no need for a crossover cable, possibly check the network settings. In "automatic" mode or DHCP, it works right away and in this case, the setup should indicate the IP address it found.  Response to question 3:  Unless I'm mistaken, the TnT key will not work on the Emtec because the TnT key is just a tuner WITHOUT the proper software to recognize and control it, etc.  And do not confuse it with a TnT decoder which is "complete" with the proper analog output that can directly connect to the Emtec.. It's not very expensive (~ 25 - 35€), a basic model is more than enough but that makes for one more remote control!!  Best regards Fred

The Emtec documentation is a bit poor... the firmware installation documentation is not up to date. Where is the firmware update procedure to avoid overwriting the partitions?
I haven't tested the network connection, but I already have questions:
Regarding the Ethernet port, we can't find the specifications (10Mbits, 100Mbits, 1Gbits). Does it work in auto-negotiation?
We cannot force the configuration to the mode (half/full duplex in 10/100). Does the port automatically detect the direction (crossed or not crossed)?
The hardware base seems very good to me, but on the software side and especially the documentation, it's a bit light (if you know the hardware/software) a more complete documentation can be quickly put together (at least to follow the evolution of the firmware)!

Thank you for these technical details!  I will try to answer two or three of your questions. These are more like deductions, actually...!  The Ethernet port is at least 100 Mb/s because when I perform transfers, it fluctuates around 25 Mb/s. Just for your information, it consumes "all the resources" of the Emtec, and it becomes very difficult to browse or do anything on the Emtec right now.  Furthermore, I think the Emtec wouldn't be able to handle 1 Gbits since it wouldn't be capable of managing such a fast speed (at least in terms of speed).  I believe it doesn't detect the crossover/non-crossover mode (I haven't tried, it's true) and there are no options regarding half duplex/full duplex mode either.  We also have to consider that this type of device is still aimed at the general public.  Best regards Fred

ouuu là Are you sure you fully understand everything?  1) The movie cube R does not have a tuner 2) The movie cube R has only one video input 3) On your television, when you connect the movie cube R, you need to connect the out output of the movie cube R with the "in" plugs of the provided scart connector 4) Find the video channel on your television (it's not a channel like TF1, France 2, etc. that you should be looking for! :) ) usually there's a button on the remote control that allows direct access  Based on these facts, you can only record from an "external" source to the television (either coming from a VCR, a TNT decoder, or a Canal Sat / TPS decoder, etc.).  In principle, you can do it from a television, but you have to leave it on during the recording and you can't do anything else at the same time without risking altering the recording! No, the box does not go into sleep mode after a scheduled recording. I am still on the new firmware V2 and so far there are no particular problems. I've looked into it a bit... The driver included in the "firmware" is for Realtek 8187 chipsets. It seems that many motherboards for PCs with Wi-Fi options use this chip. I found a store in Germany that sells a USB key with this chipset, but I don't know if it works. What's great about this Emtec box is that since everything is installed on the hard drive, it can be really expandable. If Emtec has a good development team, we could really have an amazing box... Franboise60  There are 3 partitions created automatically. One for the system (about 40% of the disk and not accessible) and 2 partitions to save your recordings (2 x about 30%). It is these 2 partitions that make up 139MB. Personally, I modified the PART.TXT file before doing my installation to have a system partition of 30% (not accessible) and one of 70% for my backups.  For connecting to the TV, try swapping the RCA video and audio plugs by putting those that are on IN onto OUT and vice versa.  Make sure to select the correct SCART input on your TV. In the configuration file part.txt, two disks are created by default, each occupying 30% of the total disk size. Knowing that a 500GB formatted disk has less than 500GB available, hence the size of 139GB. Overall, the rest of the disk is reserved for storing recordings made by the device. The device should not be connected to the PC via the USB port. For example, the RCA outputs V2, L2, R2 should be connected directly to an input of the same type or with a cable with the other end having a SCART connector. The RCA connectors are: yellow for video, white for left audio, and red for right audio. Good luck!

Tout d'abord, je tiens à m'excuser d'écrire en anglais dans un forum en français, mais c'est le seul forum actif que j'ai trouvé concernant le movie cube -r d'EMTEC. Voici mon histoire :  - J'ai acheté le movie cube -r chez Pixmania sans HDD, et un HDD Samsung HD501LJ de 500 Go.  - Le HDD a été monté dans le movie cube. J'ai téléchargé le firmware 0.9.15 depuis le site officiel d'EMTEC. J'ai connecté l'alimentation du movicube (MC), et attendu 30 secondes, puis j'ai connecté le MC à l'PC via le câble USB. L'PC a détecté le disque USB et installé les pilotes automatiquement (Windows XP SP2). Une partition "RESERVED" apparaît avec un fichier texte à l'intérieur. J'ai lancé le logiciel d'installation mais le MC n'est pas détecté par le programme. J'ai répété l'opération plusieurs fois mais rien ne change. PANIQUE ! J'ai essayé de créer divers types de partitions avec "partition magic" mais rien ne change.  - J'ai trouvé ce forum et lu le post du service technique officiel d'EMTEC sur comment installer le firmware avec une mémoire USB. D'abord, j'ai tenté avec le firmware 0.9.15 avec le fichier part.txt contenant les paramètres d'un disque de 500 Go. J'ai connecté l'alimentation du MC, avec le bouton d'alimentation enfoncé pendant au moins 5 secondes. L'installation a commencé, mais rapidement le message "INSTALL ERROR ! PLEASE REBOOT" est apparu. ENCORE PLUS DE PANIQUE !  - J'ai trouvé le nouveau firmware 2.0.4.up et j'ai tenté le même processus avec le part.txt original contenant les partitions en %.... Le même résultat "INSTALL ERROR ! PLEASE REBOOT". J'ai modifié les paramètres du part.txt, mais toujours le même problème.  Je ne veux pas avoir le cauchemar d'un retour du MC chez Pixmania (en Espagne, Pixmania est un parcours d'obstacles), et je veux donner une dernière chance à cet excellent appareil. Merci pour votre aide.  J'ai résolu le problème. J'ai déconnecté tous les appareils USB du PC et j'ai connecté UNIQUEMENT le MC, et l'installateur a reconnu le MC... EUREKA !!! Donc, l'installateur a réinitialisé le disque. La réinitialisation du disque a résolu le problème avec l'installation de la CLÉ USB. Et je peux installer n'importe quel firmware, en faisant toutes les modifications dans part.txt. TOUT PARFAIT. Et maintenant, quelques questions :  Pourquoi Emtec a-t-il retiré le firmware 2.0.4up de sa page ?  Pourquoi le MC fait-il deux partitions multimédia FAT32 au lieu d'une seule ? Est-il mieux de gérer deux petites que une plus grande ?  Depuis quelque temps, LINUX peut gérer sans problèmes les partitions NTFS. Pourquoi ces firmwares ne le peuvent-ils pas ?  Et souhaits :  Le MC pourra-t-il gérer les tuners USB DVB-T à l'avenir tout comme le WIFI USB maintenant ?  Où est la prévision météo, et le client Torrent, et peut-être YouTube ?  MKV ?  Conclusion :  Super appareil : tous les types de fichiers multimédias sont lus parfaitement, sans clics, ni désynchronisations, ni artefacts. Super puce Realtek. J'ai eu de mauvaises expériences avec des appareils basés sur des puces Sigma avec le codec XVID. Super présentations d'écran et menus. Peut-être que le navigateur pourrait mieux présenter la liste des fichiers au lieu de prévisualisations.  Pardonne mon anglais et mon français. Merci à tout le monde.

Update successful!  Via PC, for those who think their Movie Cube is not recognized by the firmware, I had this problem. But by leaving the Movie Cube plugged in via USB, I restarted the computer, and BAM, it was recognized without any issues. Same procedure as for the installation of the first firmware for me.   And I confirm: the data on the hard drives is not deleted except for the "Reserved" partition (TV recording).   Second confirmation: the subtitles are now in good shape! As for the WIFI key, it will allow you to share the movie cube in the same way as if it were connected to an ethernet switch. For now, the only known WIFI key that should work with the movie cube is the EMTEC WI200. But since it is new, I have yet to find a distributor selling it. Let's hope it will be available soon. @framboise60  I imagine you want to use the SCART socket, so at my place it works well, yellow to yellow, white to white, red to red (from left to right when looking at the back) with the "in" label facing the "out" socket (the + at the bottom of the box). Hello everyone, thank you all for this discussion that helped me with the purchase of the EMTEC movie cube R. I ordered it with a 500GB SATA2 WD hard drive from Pixmania last Friday and received it this evening. :-)  Unboxing and installation of the HDD without formatting using 4 screws mounted on a damper connecting the SATA cable + power supply for the HDD, connecting the fan, securing the rear panel (6 screws), everything is well explained anyway, it all went smoothly. A 256MB USB flash drive with the new drivers is included: formatted in FAT and named "UDISK 2.0" it is an Active partition. Nice, right? It's shaped like an eraser :-)   I connect the V2 output (video out) to my monitor, insert the flash drive into one of the USB HOST ports (powered off)  I plug the power adapter into the socket, hold the power button and connect the 12V cord to the case while holding the power button down for about 5/10 seconds...  And great relief, the installation starts! Phew...  I let everything finish (about 10 minutes) and the case goes into standby by itself... I remove the USB flash drive  After a few tests: video playback in, recording, playing movies from the external USB HDD seems to work but I haven't had time to check everything; I haven't opened the manual yet.  Too early to say more. And thank you all again for the information that allowed me to install the updated firmware without too much apprehension.  See you soon. fif'

Hello,  For framboise60  I wonder how you managed to install (or at least be suuure you installed) your Movie cube -r with the USB stick without plugging it into the TV. It's a bit like trying to go to someone's house without knowing the address. All this to say that the few indications that appear on the TV are still quite useful.   Conversely, the fact that it is not connected to the television does not prevent the firmware installation.   The recognition of the Movie cube -r by the PC doesn't guarantee that the firmware installation is correct.    I therefore advise you first to succeed in connecting the Movie cube -r to the TV in order to get "something"   Then follow the instructions in the many pages of this post.   If you reinstall via USB stick, you lose ALL the contents of the Movie cube -r.   A+  Fred

For divaz  Hello,  For the "network" recognition, it's quite simple.  The name of the MovieCube -r network is Venus. The names of the partitions are part1 and part2.  If you're on DHCP on your network and the movie is also there (default configuration) Without trying to understand... :) you can mount a resource from Windows (tools => connect a network drive)  and put:  \venus\part1  and normally you should "see" one or the other of the partitions.  Also check that your red socket on the livebox is available / active. This depends on your livebox configuration settings (TV option enabled or not among others) otherwise try the other socket.. You told me: "I advise you first to manage to connect the Movie cube -r to the TV in order to get 'something'."  But the problem is that I can't connect the movie cube to the TV. Another possibility:  There's a button that no one thinks of and that can explain the discomfort, it's the TV/System button. This button allows you to change the video output format which can be NTSC / PAL / 480P / 576P / 720P / 1080i..  And if by chance you pressed this button, there will be no video on the television, particularly for 720P and 1080i because the format is "incompatible". You just need to press it several times to get to a compatible format.  I'm not saying it's THE solution, but it has happened to me... so... I'm sharing my experience.. :)  Best regards  Fred

Hello Zatous,  I'm using the movie cube primarily for:  - Ripping DVDs - Recording from cable  I've already reached a point where disk space is becoming insufficient. So, I bought a 1 TB external hard drive (LaCie) that I connected via USB to the Movie Cube.  (My MC is in English and version 2.0.4UP)  It works perfectly fine ... I just indicated in the "setup" that the "recording device" is "USB".  But there's one issue: I can't edit my recordings (split title, merge, ...) ... in fact, I can only access my recordings in "browser" mode and not in "playback" mode (which has all the editing features) ...  I've already tinkered quite a bit to try to find a small option somewhere to solve my little problem.  Thank you for your help, pioneers.

Firmware 2.07 installation went smoothly from the PC, without touching the multimedia partitions. I don’t know about 2.04, but 2.07 supports accents by default, and it doesn't "yell" every time I create a new folder! Good evening,  Installation of the latest version (2.0.7UP) via USB connection. A few small recognition issues with the movieCube by the PC but nothing too serious compared to other things! In fact, when installing via the "FirmwareInstaller_EMTEC_V2.5.4_0823.exe", it checks the recognition of partitions and copies the files to the reserved partition. Installed without any issues.  The only "announced" change is: "Fixed HDD info issue". For my part, (not tested wifi), there are no other changes.  Regards Fred

I accidentally tested by typing the URL of my movie cube into an internet browser, like in my case http://192.168.0.110, and a web page appeared. It's an example of HTML script that adds two integers. And it returns the result. This means there is a web browser in the cube! I can already imagine being able to install a small website that would list the multimedia content of the cube to stream it to a PDA or equivalent. I haven't looked further into how to do it. If I have time, I'll keep you informed.

I just received my MovieCube R empty with a separate 500 GB hard drive;  I confirm the info from fif: a USB key is provided with the MovieCube R to automatically install the firmware without using a PC (I installed it with the SCART connected to the TV).  No installation issues; just a few remarks:  - before the loading process actually begins (when the yellow bar graph on a green background appears), an Emtech screen shows up for a few seconds; don’t panic and wait for the firmware loading to start,  - the firmware version provided on the key is 2.0.7UP,  - the file part.txt contains only one paragraph with volume percentages (see below):  udf:res ext3:512 swap:128 udf2:4096 fat32:30% fat32:30% volume1:MULTIMEDIA1 volume2:MULTIMEDIA2  - I think that before partitioning and loading the firmware, the content of the USB key formats the new disk; which explains why it should not be reused in its current state for updates.  To respond to framboise60, the firmware loading with the USB key can be done without visualizing it on the TV (it's just more reassuring to follow the process).  @+

same problem here, I plugged my movie cube into the TV to install it. I connected the USB key to my 500g hard drive;  then I plugged the power cable in while pressing the power button  for about 5 seconds; I release it.  all I see on the screen is a blue screen that says emtec.  after that, the movie cube goes into standby mode.  and when I press the stop button after a pause to display the update, nothing happens either!!!!!!!!!!! too much hassle :/  the next step WITH MY PC   and I tried on my PC too; with the firmware WHEN I START THE FIRMWARE INSTALLATION  it tells me moviecube NOT FOUND   thank you in advance for your help, it’s been almost two weeks that I’ve been dealing with this and still nothing ;((

For the Xièèèèèèmeeeee time (well, it's true there are still 350 responses to read..) I recap: Update via USB key: - Unplug the MC - Insert the USB key with its 6 files into the MC - Hold the power button - Plug the MC back in - The Emtec logo appears (don't confuse with a blue screen!) - Release the A/M button - At this point, the content of the USB key is loading (normally the USB key will be blinking) - A few seconds later, after 10 - 15 sec, a yellow screen with a loading bar (||||| ) will appear  The whole process lasts about ~ 10 mins  IF you do not see this yellow screen, it means your key is not recognized or its content is not "compliant" It is at this point, and only at this point, that you should investigate! Hello everyone, I bought a movie cube R without an HDD and ordered a 500GB Samsung SATA HDD (it was hard to choose the HDD on Top Achat). I received everything on Wednesday afternoon and was eager to quickly assemble the hardware and attempt the installation, not without worry after reading this forum. The installation of the HDD was simple, although I had to be careful not to damage the power cable while repositioning the aluminum case. However, mounting the rear panel for the fan was truly a nightmare; it seemed to not match the aluminum case at all. Finally, after a half-hour of fierce struggle, I managed to do it by bending the plate a bit. Now the fan vibrates, but I haven't yet attempted to disassemble it again. For the firmware installation, there was an additional notice (not included in the CD packaging and other notices) explaining the procedure. Insert the USB key with the drivers, press the power button, and connect the power supply. Everything works wonderfully on the TV, everything is running and the three partitions are accessible, the same on my PC, which is running XP PRO SP2. However, I proceeded with the installation according to the installation procedure via the television without having connected the multimedia HDD to either the television or the PC, just the power supply and the USB key. Perhaps this will help you with the installation. On the other hand, I have two small questions: Am I required to keep the fan connected to the power supply if I cannot solve the vibration problem? Can I connect a USB tuner to one of the host USB ports to be able to record TV programs via this tuner? Thank you and see you later, Pas depseudo

Hello  For the case:  I think you just put the case on the wrong way when you assembled it! The difference between the front and the back of the case lies in two small bumps! The front face is flush with the edge, while four of them on the back face are set back by 2 mm, allowing the back face to not protrude...  The television connection only serves as a monitor... nothing else (for the installation, of course)  USB Tuner key won't work... already, the WiFi is not straightforward... so don't count on it... Hello like you, I bought the case and a 500GB hard drive separately I had the same problem I went to see the IT guy at my work, he managed to format my entire disk in NTFS using a Linux software because the problem is that Windows can't format it all at once, nor can Partition Magic after it was formatted, I downloaded the firmware from the Emtec site, then I installed it and no more problems for me, the problem comes from the formatting. There is no need to format the disk before installing the firmware. The installation via USB stick ensures the complete formatting of the disk and the implementation of the firmware.

Hello, I was looking to acquire a multimedia hard drive for mainly musical use, to connect it to my stereo in my room, far from the TV. Without a television, it's more than a hassle The "MP3 player" function of the Emtec isn't its strong suit..! :)  It doesn't do random play, the playlist management isn't the simplest...  I can't tell you more, since I mainly use it for the "recording" function  Go to the forum, you'll find plenty of other information about the Emtec.

Hi, I also bought a movie cube-R, but there was no guide to install the firmware. First, you need to connect the movie cube-R to the PC and the TV if you can. So you need to click on "Reset" when it says it cannot find it. Then click "Yes" and unplug the power cord and the USB cable and wait for 30 seconds. Reconnect only the power cord and wait for the movie cube-R to go into standby, and then connect the USB cable. Restart the firmware, and it will find the movie cube-R. Then click on "Next" and configure according to the capacity of your hard drive and finally click on "install." WARNING: It is advisable to partition the hard drive into two for a capacity of 400 GB and more. Then it will ask you to disconnect the USB cable so that the installation completes on the TV. P.S: I did it with a 160 GB hard drive and it works. The only downside is that I lost half the space on the 160 GB.

Hello everyone,  Recently struggling with the moviecube, I took advantage of your experiences and I think it's only right to share what helped me.  First of all, the biggest problem I encountered was that my PC could never detect the moviecube via USB after countless attempts. So I tried to install the firmware with the USB stick blindly as I didn't have an image (I later realized that on the SCART adapter provided by Emtec, the "In" and "Out" were reversed (the marking, not the soldering)). The LEDs stopped blinking very quickly, which made me think it wasn't good; I then modified the part.dat of the USB stick to enter the values in bytes for the multimedia partitions instead of in %. This time the operation took longer, which seemed better. Desperate to connect my cube via USB, I connected the HD directly via SATA, and there I could see that the partitions had indeed been created.  I reversed the "In" and "Out" and connected the cube to my TV, and lo and behold, it worked. Then I still had to connect my cube to the Wi-Fi with the PC, and it wasn't without difficulties because even though the cube detected the router, it couldn't connect with the WPA key. Ultimately, it finally worked after a little less than ten connection attempts.  That's how the cube made me spend a long evening, and probably more without your help. Thank you.

If anyone has an idea for a setting or something to suggest, go ahead.... It is impossible to play MKV files; no home player does that. You need to re-encode the file into another format to play in HD.

I also have an installation problem with a Movie Cube R100 freshly purchased from Darty (with the hard drive already included, 500GB).
Let me explain my problem.

I am trying to install the firmware available on the CD. The problem is that Vista detects it well (only when I turn it on having already connected it via USB) but the installation software does not detect anything. I have tried the various methods suggested in the 17 previous pages (USB drivers from the CD, other firmware versions, the USB key method...) but nothing works. I also tried the USB key method but the MC does not detect the USB key.
I tried the different methods with 4 different firmware versions, still nothing. I'm starting to get a bit desperate having paid €329 for what is currently just a nice paperweight.

Another thing that seems strange to me is that I can only turn off the MC by unplugging it. When it powers on, it goes into standby after about twenty seconds, then when I press the power button, the front panel lights up, but if I press it again, nothing happens, even if I keep it pressed?
Lastly, I have no video signal. Really none at all, and I want to emphasize that I have connected everything as indicated, namely in/out and everything works well on the TV....

In short, I'm a bit annoyed by this nice little cube...

I would like to point out that I am studying networks and telecommunications and that I am not a beginner in computing, so if I am asking for your help, it is because I really can't find any "easy" solutions and the information provided in the previous pages has not allowed me to solve my problem.

Hello, I installed the firmware with a USB stick but something went wrong because now the movie cube won't turn on. Well, it does turn on, but that's it, no more reactions!! Only the blue power light blinks when I press the power button.

Hello, I just bought the Movie Cube R700 from Top Achat. I only buy from there now, and at first, I admit my frustration. Anyway, after two days of testing and reading the documentation, which is rudimentary as the device is very simple, I read all your advice, but nothing worked. So I thought about it, and then bingo! I thought that the USB stick in the Top Achat package was a gift, and for two days I never paid attention to that USB stick. So out of anger, after trying everything on my desktop and laptop, this damn Movie Cube didn't work. I decided to plug it into the TV screen in the kitchen, and there was a nice screen on the Movie Cube, but nothing. Then I plugged in my USB stick that I thought was a gift, which is actually the firmware I was looking for everywhere… I felt so bad… ready to return the product. I just plugged it into the USB of the Movie Cube, and it started the installation process. I waited 10 minutes and it said installation complete. I removed the stick, turned it off with the button, then off at the power source, plugged it back in, and the magic of the Movie Cube worked.   My disk that I formatted in NTFS was reformatted in FAT32 by the firmware. I made two partitions, which work fine, the remote is okay, movies are okay, recording is okay.   Then I put it back on my desktop, which never wanted to detect it, and miraculously, it worked. I transferred movies, photos, etc., and then I put it back on the TV with RCA cable, and everything worked. And to think I read and reread pages when the firmware was 2 meters away from me, pfffffffff. Sometimes even when you know... Hello everyone, I will give more details when I know how to record TV well.

I bought a K120, and I had some difficulties at first (Mac system), as it wasn't booting properly, formatted to MS-DOS FAT32 and there you go, it worked, subtitles were recognized too (a bit off-centered towards the top, but at least recognized).
