HP Photosmart C4280 Driver Issues

Solved/Closed
Anonymous user -

Hello,
I just installed a HP Photosmart C4280, everything installs correctly (photo software, scanner, etc. provided on the CD-ROM).
The only problem is that my printer driver won't install.
I am using Vista Home Basic.
Windows tells me: "The opened file is no longer valid because the volume it contains has been damaged externally"

I downloaded the basic drivers and the full drivers from HP but still get the same message.
I have tried all the installation options I know.
I don't know what else to do.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you.
Configuration: Windows Vista Firefox 2.0.0.9

    Good evening everyone,

Under Windows XP Home, after many attempts followed by failures, here’s how I managed to get it done.

I followed the advice found on the HP website:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00749582&lc=en&cc=en&dlc=en&
    product=3192753&os=2093&rule=3120&lang=en
but by modifying and completing it a bit.

In step 1, since I wasn’t prompted to uninstall using the CD, I proceeded as follows:

Click on Start, then on All Programs, on HP, on HP Photosmart Essential * and on Uninstall, follow the instructions that appear
Click on Start, then on All Programs, on HP, on Photosmart C4200 series * and on Uninstall, follow the instructions that appear
    * (if of course this or these 2 software are present because they managed to install
    during a previous attempt…)
Then go to Control Panel ==> Add/Remove Programs and remove the 6 programs related to this installation that remain:
    HP Customer Participation Program 8.0
    HP Imaging Device Functions 8.0
    HP OCR Software 8.0
    HP Solution Center 8.0
    HP Update
    HPSSupply

Steps 2 and 3, I followed them to the letter.

    In step 4
, I chose the 2nd method: installing the product software from the CD

    Note:
    * 2 ways to proceed are offered to you in the 3rd or 4th window:
either continue by connecting the USB cable, (printer previously powered on of course), to the PC
or continue by not connecting it at that moment, but then you must check the box at the bottom left, (it’s this 2nd option that I chose)

Then step 5 in full, very important.

Just had to finalize the installation, there I did as indicated by memo1624 in his post from Monday, November 12, 2007, at 3:38:17
    http://www.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-3950492-probleme-pilotes-hp-photosmart-c4280#0

<ital>“ … once the installation is complete, you need to restart the PC and do as follows without removing the installation CD:
Connect the USB cable between the printer,
(printer previously powered on), and your computer.
A window will appear indicating “New Hardware Wizard detected”
check the option from a list or a location
another window will appear indicating “Choose your Search Options”
Only check “include this location in the search”
Then type the following path “C:\WINDOWS\inf” and click on next.
You need to repeat this action as many times as you receive the Msg “New Hardware Wizard detected”

It worked for the first 2 or 3 windows of the “New Hardware Wizard,” files were installed successfully, but when it came to the driver for the 4200, the same as that for the 4280, it didn't find it anymore…
Trying everything for the sake of it, I put the CD in so that the “New Hardware Wizard” could search it and it worked, it installed, and I got a window with congratulations from HP!

Do not worry if the installation progress bar stopped at 96%, as long as you have the HP window to register the product, once it’s sent, it will reach 100%.

I restarted my computer once again (just in case!) and my printer was indeed listed in the control panel, in my image devices, and was operational, including scanner, copier. Phew!

I hope this post is useful to at least one of those who are looking!

      Thank you, ielena!
Your helpful summary finally allowed me to complete the installation (on Windows XP Home) after 2 days of struggle.

Thanks also to all the contributors, especially memo1624.

But why is HP unable to provide this information????

      Best regards.

    Hello,

I had the same problem with the HP C4200 after three days of struggle and after contacting HP support, which couldn't resolve the issue. I decided to reinstall it one last time.

First, I disabled the Windows firewall.
    Then I disabled the antivirus.

And, as if by magic, it installed without any problems.
    So it's working normally now.

    Hello lucduc,
I have the same problem as you since Wednesday (the day of the purchase). I followed friendly advice like disabling the firewall and antivirus before installing the software but it’s still the same: the copier and printer work but the scanner displays "USB not connected". In the control panel, I also have the printer and the scanner. Maybe it will work for you. If someone could also give me some advice??? I have Windows 2000 Professional.

      Hello everyone,

So here’s maybe the (or a solution), I bought the HP Photosmart C4280 on March 29. I tried for 24 hours to install it. No way: there's always a problem when installing the USB cable. I tried everything: disabling the firewall, the antivirus, clearing the cache files, reinstalling from the Internet, completing the installation without connecting the cable, etc.

So here’s the miracle solution (for me): the problem was the cable (even though it was bought brand new on March 29).
You need: a USB cable that is less than two meters long and it must absolutely be a USB 2.0 cable. If it's a USB 1.0 or longer than two meters, there won't be a connection.

So there you go, I hope this helps you, good luck.

photosmart C 4280: after numerous difficulties in loading the software (directly via the internet and not from the CD), the printer tells me "alignment failure"; it is skipping the entire top of the page to print; how can I perform the alignment knowing that I was able to print the alignment page, but the alignment phase via the scanner is not working.

Hello, I had the same problem with HP C4280 under XP, no issues at all; then under Vista, the copier and printer work normally, except for the scanner. Finally, I found the solution, so use the "Windows Fax and Scan," which is located in "START => ALL PROGRAMS," everything works! Good luck to everyone!

      Hello,

I have the same problem as others from what I've read.

I downloaded the software from the HP website. I installed it on Vista. And my printer works.

However, I can't scan; the printer shows that the USB port is not connected.
Additionally, I do not have the software open in the taskbar next to the clock...
When I go to Start, all programs, there is no HP folder.

If someone could help me, it would be really nice because I really need my scanner at the moment.

      Best regards,

      Emile

    Hello everyone,
I am on Vista, and I’ve been trying to get this HP C4280 printer to work for several days now, but it still won't print. It was working perfectly fine on XP.
I’ve done all the troubleshooting steps suggested on the HP website, including the reinstallation mentioned above, by disabling all firewalls (antivirus and Windows Vista), and it still won't print.
The only function that is not working is printing; even the document copying through the HP utility on the computer works fine.
For printing, it puts the documents in the queue, and the status of the documents is "printing in progress" even though it’s not printing; however, there is ink and paper. The printer itself is shown as ready by the HP software.

I’ve also tried modifying the port settings for the printer, and nothing changes. The same goes for user permissions in the security settings. I’m out of ideas... :/
If anyone has a solution to suggest, thank you. :)

    Hello,
same here, same thing. To be precise:
machine purchase with Vista 2 months ago... the printer installation went smoothly!
    BUT
after many issues, I used the restoration DVDs (to be created yourself at the first start of the machine = what a good idea!) for a reset of the "clocks"

everything works well and better... except for the installation of the HP C4280 which gets stuck at HP Photosmart C4200 series = driver software installation... but nothing more... the worst part is that the following message appears: your devices are ready to use...

I tried the methods on the HP website:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00749582&lc=fr&cc=fr&dlc=fr&product=3192753&os=2093&rule=3120&lang=fr
    with no result.........
I also used, from the CD, the utilities in the ccc util directory uninstall1 bat to uninstall4 bat.......... nothing works!
still no C4280 in the control panel.....
there seems to be a software installation procedure... INF problem update (seen on a forum) but I didn't find the details..
I left a message to HP for a request for help.... to be continued..........

long live the pleasures of computing....
    warm regards to all

    additional details:

I also tried through the device manager, under start, control panel......
in the other devices section there is a ? and when expanded we indeed find the c4280 but the driver is not installed.....

request for an update, there is indeed an attempt..... but the following message:
error the file is no longer valid because the volume containing it has been externally damaged....

so..... to be continued.... but it leads me to believe there is a problem between Vista (premium here) and the c4280?

Hello everyone. The driver for the Photosmart C4280 is the version for the Photosmart C4200, version 9.0 or 9.0.1 (even more recent). The problem with Vista is that it blocks the ports even during installation. So you need to manually check all the open ports. Don’t forget to also disable the firewall and antivirus before installation. Sorry, I can’t help any more, I’m not knowledgeable enough.

Hi there, I had an issue when I had to use the scanner. I even chatted with a person from HP and then emailed them, and after telling them that despite all their advice it still didn't work, they replied that it was a malfunction of their machine. They asked me to choose a pickup point near my home, which is a location HP uses to exchange their defective devices, and they sent me a new one in exchange. Today, after 4 days, my new printer has arrived and works perfectly.

The scanner is working! It is indeed a printer driver issue!

news from the front ....no from hp

firdaousse: so first you need to completely uninstall by following these steps:
firdaousse: - Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
Remove all HP programs related to the machine
    - Delete the HP folder from c:\program files
    - Go to C:\Temp\HP WEB Release\util\ccc\uninstall_L1, then run uninstall_L2 ...until uninstall_L4
    - Restart your PC

firdaousse: then you will reinstall the software by following these steps:
firdaousse: you need to do the installation without connecting the USB cable
insert the installation CD and follow the installation instructions.
at one point you will have a checkbox at the bottom of the page "indicate here if you cannot connect your device" check it.
once the installation is complete, you need to restart the PC and do the following without removing the installation CD:

Connect the USB cable between the printer and your computer.
a window will appear indicating "New hardware wizard detected"
check the option from a list or a location
another window will appear indicating "Choose your search options"
Only check "include this location in the search"
then type the following path "C:\WINDOWS\inf" then click next.
you have to repeat this operation as many times as you get the message "New hardware wizard detected"

I'm trying the manipulation and I'll keep you posted

    Hello,

I also have a problem with a C4280 that crashes at step 6 of 8 during installation, and then closes the HP Solution Center telling me that it cannot find any HP hardware on my computer. (yet I can see the all-in-one installed on the computer and the Windows installation wizard keeps offering to help me set up my NEW hardware... argggggg)

The HP CHAT service copied this to me:

Imane: First, I invite you to follow the steps indicated in the following link to remedy this inconvenience:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00857074&cc=en&lc=en&dlc=en&product=1146331&dlc=en&lang=en

Note: Please copy the entire link (up to =en&lang=en) to avoid error messages due to unregistered pages.

During the installation phase, please download the full driver from the HP website at the following address:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-46994-1&lc=en&cc=en&dlc=en&product=1153494&os=2093&lang=en

Note: Please copy the entire link (up to &lang=en) to avoid error messages due to unregistered pages.

If the proposed tests have not resulted in the desired solution, please email me the results of the following points after you have checked them:

    - Make sure the front panel is properly secured.
    - Make sure the USB cable and power cord are properly connected.
    - Make sure the USB cable is no longer than three meters.
    - Make sure the USB cable is not connected to an unpowered keyboard or USB hub.
    - If other USB devices are connected to the system, unplug them during installation.

Otherwise, it may not be related, but have you checked that your print spooler is functioning correctly on your machine??

      Hello,
you are, I believe, an HP technician. Can you help me solve my problem: the printer installs but the scanning function does not work. When I try to scan, it responds: an error occurred while communicating with the scanning device. Please check that the scanning device is properly connected and try again....
What can I do, no driver changes the problem and nothing is scheduled at HP

    Good evening,

As for me, I've given up. The scanner side (Twain) is recognized even though the HP4280 says the USB connection is nonexistent. (which is strange because Windows Vista tells me the software is correctly installed)

Anyway, I'm done being frustrated with this; there are more interesting things to do in life than to struggle with a support team that seems to change personnel every 15 days...

Good luck to you, I will continue to read your messages and keep you informed if I find something on my end.

    Hello,

is there a green light on the power supply transformer? If not: power failure
the power on is done by pressing the specific start button...
otherwise return to the store for after-sales service.

PS: still no installation here! HP is asking me to test the machine on another workstation!

    Good evening everyone,

I too (finally, after many days of hassle) managed to install this printer

I had "hot" that is to say the printer on, activated the Windows firewall and my antivirus (Avast)
went back to the device manager and updated, chose the recommended option directly, and oh surprise no error message, the printer is in the list of printers.......
I had already done this manipulation.............hum.............hard to understand....................................

    good luck to everyone
    sincerely

PS: I had also, but it's hard to determine the reality of things, done all the updates for Vista, including optional updates
Nvidia, having an HP a6167fr............for your information
but I must admit I don't know what allowed the installation this time!
