NOKIA 9800S Demodulator: What is it used for?

Solved

Hello,
I have a NOKIA 9800S decoder that has never been used and is still under warranty, purchased in January 2006 for 194 euros.
Can someone tell me what I can do with it? What channels can I "receive" and what type of subscription should I get if I decide to register?
This device is unfortunately no longer marketed, but I refuse to sell it cheaply; it has never been used. So I want to know if I can install it at home. I have a satellite dish.
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 7.0

One must hope that the M.A.2.0 version is correctly installed (it indicates this at the startup of the device, just after turning it on and for the Nokia 9800s, as this version 2.0 is no longer downloadable since the Nokia 9800s is no longer marketed...

To answer your question on what to do with it, well, not much, as the VIACESS encryption system allowed TPS subscribers to watch TV... Despite its common interface (PCMCIA) that allowed, with an added module, to receive CanalSat, it should be noted that since TPS was bought by CanalSat, "SUBSCRIPTION ONLY" cards are no longer marketed. In fact, Canal Sat avoids piracy and also applies "forcing" so that its subscribers are "obliged" to get a proprietary terminal from them, so they can better "control" them... And with the arrival of HD TVs (and HD channels), there will increasingly be digital terminals in HD.

So, for now, your terminal can serve only two purposes:

to a TPS subscriber who has kept their TPS terminal and is "migrating" to CanalSat (with a new VIACESS card) to use it as a second terminal (to put in their bedroom, for example)

Or to keep it in FREE TO AIR mode to receive French and foreign channels in clear from the Astra/HotBird satellites, for example... but in clear, there isn't much to watch, except for a few French and TNT channels...

Or to put it in storage, in a box, because, it's true that this terminal will soon be part of the "past"... LOL

I ALSO HAVE A SPOTLESS NOKIA 9800S WITH TPS
      CONTACTED THIS MORNING WITH CANALSAT CONFIRMED THAT EVERY CUSTOMER CAN HAVE THEIR OWN DECODER; CANALSAT CONFIRMED TO ME THAT A LOT OF THEIR CUSTOMERS STILL HAVE THEIR PERSONAL DECODER;
REGARDING THE PRESSURE TO RENT, A RECENT ARTICLE SHOWS THAT THIS CASE WILL END UP IN COURT SINCE IT IS EFFECTIVELY A SALES OR RENTAL METHOD THAT IS RATHER DISHONEST OR .....!
IT ALSO APPEARS THAT THE NOKIA 9800S IS NOT COMPATIBLE, BUT OTHER MODELS ARE AND THEIR AMORTIZATION IS QUICK!

TPS is dead... bought by Canal+

The migrations continue from Hot Bird to Astra... By the way, you should know that subscription-only cards, Csat is stopping the broadcast, because Csat will require all its subscribers to rent a terminal at home... Me, I returned my Sagem TPS terminal, in exchange for a DUAL-S, which allows reception in SD and HD, because the future of TV is indeed in HD... so it is preferable to opt for a digital terminal that works on both systems, as little by little SD will disappear...

I also own a Nokia 9800s, connected in "cascade" and it only serves to watch the free-to-air channels on HotBird... because since the migration took place on Astra, my Viaccess card no longer works... The Viaccess encryption remains for those who have a TPS terminal or other, but it shouldn't last... it's a transitional period for the migration from TPS to Csat, which is supposed to last until the end of this year...

Little by little, TPS terminals will be replaced by a Basic mediasat, that's why, for the price of 8€/month, and since the Dual-S is the same price, it's better to "opt" for this rental terminal, compatible with SD/HD, while adding, like me, a compatible hard drive (reimbursed 50€ by Canal+) to record...

All while knowing that the Nokia 9800s no longer has updates... and frankly, it is no longer relevant... and outdated...

        Good luck....

    Hello,

    don't sell your Nokia 9800s.

Your device is still far from useless.

It decodes Viaccess 2.6 without any issues, so SSR TPS and of course BIS are available without any problems.

If you choose a PowerCAM module, there's no problem for Canal Sat and for all the X packages.

Moreover, the Nokia 9800s should soon have an update regarding the new card changes for CanalSat.

As of today, the Nokia 9800s is a high-performing decoder that can compete quite well with the new ones.

In summary, keep it or sell it for over 190 euros, that's its price on eBay.

      Hello

What module is needed to read the new CSAT cards currently in service on a Nokia 9800 S?

As a holder of a Nokia 9800S, I just integrated a powercam pro module for receiving canalsat with the c+ option. It works well, but my device must be getting old, as I seem to have a loose connection at the PCMCIA port of the powercam (as soon as I turn off the device, it no longer recognizes the module...)

      Compatibility issue, or aging?

      Hello cidou71
I'm in the same situation as you. I have to restart a scan for the powercam pro to be operational again. Have you found a solution to this issue?
      Thank you

It seems that the mediamaster has a small design issue.
I got this response on the satmag forum.

      Hello,
I have been a subscriber since the beginning of TPS, I had a change of TPS card a few years ago but since then, it has never come out of the 9800S.
Sure, the device is not perfect, but the management of lists, etc. is very intuitive compared to other satellite receivers.
Anyway, I don't intend to change it.
I should receive a migration letter in June.
Normally, I should receive a new card (39?), I suppose?

The 9800 S is compatible with the Viaccess card from canalsat; you just need to remove the PCMCIA module and insert the card into the other slot with the chip facing down, and request a rights reactivation from canalsat. For certain channels, you need to look for another channel. It only works if the module is no longer inserted. The software version does not seem to matter since I still have version 1.3. No new version is available.

Thank you for the information, I own 2 Nokia 9800 S bought on eBay:

The first one is second-hand, it has version 2.0 (it glitches and bugs on Hotbird, but works very well on Astra)

And the second one, bought new online from a decoder specialist, only has version 1.3

I am with CSAT on a DUAL-S (exchanged 2 times) which is causing problems.

If I had known, I should have kept my VIACCESS card from TPS (transformed into CSAT after migration) and I could have inserted it into the appropriate slot...

However, it is true that there would be no more updates, the Nokia 9800s being OBSOLETE, as HD has arrived, and more and more digital terminals for sale are HD....

The Nokia 9800s is not obsolete.

It works perfectly with the new cards alone.

Moreover, if one day Viaccess 3.0 is activated, after contacting Nokia France's customer service, they confirmed that as soon as this activation is implemented, a new version of the firmware for Nokia 9800s 9902 will be available via the Hotbird and Astra satellites!

So the 9800s is still fine, and its price on eBay is starting to soar like the Simba and Wamba from Aston.

    In summary, keep your decoder.

    Whatever!!!

The Nokia 9800s is indeed OBSOLETE for the future...LOL...It is not designed for HD.

You are right to keep it for your "museum," a Nokia 9800S digital terminal that will never be HD, and therefore will never be able to give you channels (coming soon) in HD...on an HD television, which is becoming the TV of the future (go check in stores, the cathode ray tube is DEAD, like TPS...LOL)

Now, to each their own, it's true, if you can find a "FOOL" to buy your Nokia, with skyrocketing prices...like I got tricked....

As for me, being part of the "past," I keep the Mediamaster because I've known it since its creation; I fell in love with it...lol. And I think that, compared to others like you mentioned, the Wamba, etc...there's nothing better!!!

    For your information:

You should know that Canasat blocks "subscription-only" cards and does "forcing" to make subscribers switch to rental, to avoid piracy!!!! (rented terminal + cards compatible with the same terminal)

In fact, the 9800S will soon become a FTA.....

    Hello,

The Nokia 9800s works very well on Canalsat with the new card, and Canal doesn't block anything at all; only new subscribers will have to pay 3 euros per month, otherwise it works great.

The Nokia 9800s is even more powerful today, and if you’re a bit clever, you can even find new updates made by enthusiasts, but you have to be smart :-)

Otherwise, the Nokia 9800s on eBay is at least 120 to 150 euros all included, so saying it should go to the museum is a joke.

The Nokia 9800s is one of the few decoders to offer a Scart input with RGB in and out!
Moreover, it can provide the best PAL image in non-RGB mode ever achieved on a breathtaking decoder!

Also, with a Bis subscription, it works like a charm!

Honestly, the Nokia 9800s is for life; it is the best non-HD decoder on the market, and compared to my Wamba 302, I prefer it, which shows that old and good is far from being a vain expression.

AND IT WAS THE FIRST SUCCESSFUL DECODER!!! THE REAL PRICE IS STILL 170 EUROS.

    LOL...

170€... For what? The Nokia is indeed outdated or obsolete... because HD is here, and it's not a dream... Laughing

At that price, if you add a little, you can find HD digital devices, second-hand... smiling...

Unfortunately, version 2.0 is no longer available for download on the Web.

You will have to look for it through the Satellite Terminal dealer, who may have the last update...

      Good luck.

Good evening, for the servers... it's not always the same ones... however, I have neither a firewall, nor an anti-spam, antivirus, or anything else! So nothing to disrupt it... maybe that's your problem... I would have downloaded it for you, but which one is the right one??? In all these files, there must be some nonsense in addition... If there's a text file included, you just have to read it, but I don't want you to install something wrong and mess everything up because of me... well, I'm going to download a file, I'll open it with Winzip and see what it's about... For now it's "pending"... I'll keep you posted...

Hello, I downloaded a file of just over 6MB, decompressed it with WinZip, but there is only a Setup.exe file... no text file for any explanation... The file is titled "update 2009", version 6.0.3790.0 The icon is in the shape of a CD... You understand that I am hesitant to open it... Do you know which version of the file you need?

Thank you, Toto. I think it's safer not to use this "exe" which, after research, corresponds to nothing except for a Microsoft update???. The latest version for the Nokia 9800s only carries the number "2". Thanks again for your research. Hope to see you soon. Best regards.
