Home server on laptop won't boot after kernel panic

Hello,

I have an issue with my home server on an old laptop that no longer starts. There was a kernel panic a few weeks ago while I was on vacation. When I returned home three days later, the server was running the fans at full speed and was hot. I was able to shut it down by holding down the power button. Note that kernel panics were happening regularly, about every 2 or 3 weeks, but each time the laptop did not overheat, except for this time.

After this last kernel panic, it is impossible to start: when I press the power button, the power LED lights up, then the CPU fan starts to run for about 3 seconds, the keyboard CAPS LED lights on during the last of these 3 seconds. Then everything shuts off for about 2 to 3 seconds, then it restarts in a loop.

I tried to diagnose it on my own, but having little experience with this kind of problem I couldn't reach a clear conclusion. If you could help me fix the problem that would be great. Below is a technically formatted report by AI detailing the symptoms and what has been tried.

Technical Report: HP Pavilion 11-n000nf x360 Boot Loop

???? System Information

Model Number: HP Pavilion 11-n000nf x360

Storage: 500 GB Hard Drive

Original OS: Windows 8 (Ubuntu Server installed later, current OS)

Power Adapter: 19.5V 2.31A (45W) with 4.5mm x 3.0mm barrel connector

???? Problem Description

Symptoms :

  • Boot loop: The laptop turns on but restarts in a loop after a few seconds.

  • No display: No HP logo, no BIOS, no error messages.

  • No beep codes nor on-screen errors.

  • Power LED: Stays on continuously (not blinking).

  • Fan behavior: Spins briefly (2-3 seconds) then stops.

  • Power source: the problem persists with and without the power adapter connected.

???? Troubleshooting Steps and Attempts

Attempted Solutions

  1. BIOS recovery with Win + B: Used 08050.bin and 02209.bin renamed to HPTOOLS.BIN.
  2. BIOS recovery with Hewlett-Packard/BIOS/New/HP.BIN: Tried with both .bin files.
  3. BIOS recovery with /HP/BIOS/Update/HP.BIN: Long press on keys (30+ sec).
  4. Different USB drives: Tried with USB drives 2.0 and 3.0 (formatted FAT32).
  5. Different Key Combinations: Tried Win + B, Esc + Power, F2 + Power, F10 + Power.
  6. CMOS Battery reset: Battery removed for 10+ minutes.
  7. Pure Start Bypass: Hold Esc/F2 + power, battery/AC removed.
  8. RAM test: Tested with and without the module in the single slot.
  9. Minimal Hardware Test: CPU + 1 RAM + battery (without AC) and CPU + RAM + AC (without battery)
  10. Visual inspection of Motherboard: No burn marks or bulging capacitors.
  11. Reconnect all components: All cables and components reconnected.
  12. HP Recovery Tool (Third-Party): Downloaded from a driver site (non-HP because the PC is old and HP no longer hosts drivers) to create a USB recovery drive.

For each of these solutions, there was no change in the boot behavior. Symptoms remain the same.

Solutions Not Tried

  1. BIOS reprogramming with CH341A: Requires soldering skills and external hardware. I have not pursued it yet because it seems complex and would require purchasing equipment. But according to AI, this would be the most likely cause. What do you think?
