What to buy for summer 2026

Hello,

I have now been in an apartment (studio 16 m2) in Marseille for 4 years.

Currently in the middle of summer I can no longer stand the heat in the apartment, morning and evening (30 to 31 degrees Celsius and a maximum humidity around 50% from what I’ve observed). It’s a studio with three large aligned windows that light up the entire room; among the three, one opens and the other two don’t. Plus the sun hits the two panels that don’t open (the third a little for me), the sun doesn’t strike the windows directly but it touches them anyway from morning until around 1 PM and then moves toward the buildings opposite. Even during all this time the heat hits the glass (I don’t have an exterior blind or shutter) so the interior curtain heats up (and it’s a curtain I can’t remove) and it makes my bed warm because it’s near the window and then the rest of the studio...

I don’t have a fan (I only have a small handheld fan), I don’t have a portable air conditioner, nothing at all bought, so I’d like to get your shopping advice before stock runs out (personally about a standing fan) and also if you have ideas to reduce indoor temperature I’m taking them (personally I bought lime putty whitewash but it’s clearly recommended to place it outside but here’s the problem: the two windows don’t open (no handle, nothing). You can’t imagine the trouble of cleaning either — well, maybe some tips??)

    Hello,

    To complement the idea of fabul (which I salute in passing…) rather to view, I think with a thermal blackout curtain, thermal curtain anti-frost, thermal curtain anti-heat or an insulating thermal and acoustic curtain!

    Personally, I use a tropical fan of this type.

    A bit noisy, but effective.

      Hi MPMP10,

      Here we have a wall-mounted heat pump on the 2nd floor blowing air down the stairs to the first floor, and a portable air conditioner in the garage, which handles the basement. Plus, everything communicates together, the air circulates, approximately 22°C throughout the house even in not-extreme weather. Even with that, it’s hard to keep the dining room below 24-25°C during extreme heat waves; right now here it’s comfortable with about 24°C outside during the day.

      Stay cool everyone who is dealing with a heat wave, take regular cold showers as needed; it’s become a real public health issue, climate change. We didn’t used to experience heat waves as extreme as they are 40 years ago,

    Hello,

    A white curtain heats less than a colored curtain.

    A heat pump or an air conditioner is increasingly required, almost everywhere, in Quebec too.

    Take a cold shower, or otherwise one that is a bit warmer than the air; when you come out you will be cold :)

    Hello,

    The problem is your two fixed windows.

    You can try to tape a survival blanket on them, with the silver side facing outward.

    For it to be fully effective, the blanket should be installed outside. 
    Drawback: it darkens the interior quite a bit.

    I recommend buying a standing fan. It doesn't lower the temperature, but the perceived comfort is better.

    I strongly discourage buying cheap "air conditioners"; the Internet is full of ads for these devices. For an air conditioner to be effective, you must exhaust the heat outside (slightly open window, for example). Don’t be taken in!

        No need to break the bank. The basic model, with 3 speeds and fairly wide blades to move a large air flow, is suitable.
        At slow speed, it is not very loud and can therefore be left running at night.

        There must currently be a very high demand.
