    Here’s what WhatsApp (on Android) proposes for your online presence, this is a copy/paste:

    "The online presence tells you if a person is online and when they last used WhatsApp. If a person is online, it means that WhatsApp is open on their device and they are connected to the Internet. However, that does not mean they have read your message.

    Modify your online presence

    You can determine who can see your online presence:

    1. Tap on the three dots > Settings > Privacy.
    2. Tap on Online Presence.
    3. Select Everyone, My Contacts, My Contacts Except... or No One. "

    And to know if someone is online, it’s not precise (similarly, this is copy/paste):

    "How to know if someone is online on WhatsApp?"

    The “Online” status is automatic and requires no specific action from you. As soon as you open the WhatsApp application and are active (reading or replying to a message, looking at conversations…), you appear as “online.”

    The “Online” status means you are connected to WhatsApp at that moment.

    Displaying the Online Status on WhatsApp

    The status “online today at …” refers to the last moment (exact time) when the user was active in the application."

      With Skype it was possible to be invisible, but on WhatsApp I don't think so.
