Hello,

I would like to buy an external hard drive to free up space on my laptop.

The documents to store are photos and videos.

I found this hard drive on Fnac: https://www.fnac.com/Disque-dur-externe-Seagate-Expansion-STKN1000400-1-To-Noir/a17895785/w-4

1TB for €60 and well-rated by users.

But I also found an SSD hard drive (I don't see what is different from an external hard drive) https://havenridges.com/products/disque-dur-externe-4to-turbossd-havenbridges?variant=50383116468571

4TB for €40

Why is there this price difference? It's cheaper and has 4 times the storage.

In your opinion, what is the best solution?

Thank you and have a nice day

Hello,

You will notice on the same link a 64TB SSD for €80.

I don't know if 64TB SSDs exist yet, but they would never be at such a low price. So we are looking at a scam.

This is an old fraud: https://blog.kiatoo.com/conseils-achat/ssd-1-tb-16-tb-30-tb-petit-prix-attention-arnaque-faux-ssd-pas-chers-3741

Hello

To complement the response from jee pee, whom I greet.

There is no external SSD of that capacity. It is indeed a scam.

To get an idea of the reality, a manufacturer/assembler, like Kingston (which manufactures the chips, assembles them, and sells them retail) offers an external SSD with 4 TB, which is currently its largest on the market.

Available to the public, it will be found at around €250 minimum.

Hello,

Fnac explanation for the first one:

The Seagate Expansion portable hard drive is a convenient storage space for your PC. The Seagate® Expansion portable hard drive is compact and ideal for accompanying you everywhere. Instantly increase the storage capacity of your PC or Mac and take your large files wherever you go. Installation is simple and quick: just connect a single USB cable, and you're good to go! The drive is powered by the USB cable; no external power source is needed. Plus, it...

The other one, that is the SSD:

This external hard drive offers lightning-fast speed, maximum compatibility, and unparalleled reliability, all at an unbeatable price.

Ultra-fast transfer – Up to 150MB/s, which is 5 times faster than a traditional hard drive. Say goodbye to endless waiting times for transferring your large files!

Plug & Play – No installation required. Just plug it in and use it immediately on Windows, Mac, or Linux thanks to its USB 3.1 port.

Ultra-durable design – Built with robust alloy, shock and drop resistant, for maximum protection of your precious data.

Up to 64TB of storage – Whether you're a student, professional, or gamer, you will find the ideal capacity for your needs.

It is clear that both are compatible with PCs and have sufficient storage for what you want to keep.

After all, the external hard drive (the first one) is sturdier than the SSD.

SSDs fail faster according to some who own them.

As for me, I only have manual hard drives and that suits me just fine.

Have a nice day.

Hello Didi

The second SSD is a well-known and widely documented scam.

Hello,

More generally, even if an SSD has a limited number of write cycles, its lifespan can often be considered around 10 years today, with no significant practical difference compared to hard drives.

Differences in longevity will depend on the manufacturing process and to some extent on the capacity.

The main advantage of the SSD (speed) is probably not relevant when it's just about storing data, not a system.

Apart from obvious scams, prices are free, and one can certainly argue that brands play on their name to charge more.

However, we expect a drive to be reliable, and buying a No Name brand, of which we are not sure of its reliability, is playing Russian roulette.

For example, WD or Seagate are a bit more expensive; you can find 1 to 2 TB Toshiba drives for under 60 to about 80€ that are sufficient for most users, and later buy a second one if needed (that's my case, I have one for backup and one with movies, there are roughly 300 on the second 2 TB drive which is only about 800 GB full).

Hi,

Ouch, I didn't notice that famous scam well and since I no longer shop online, it's over for the moment with scams like that.

Sorry for not seeing it clearly.

Have a good day everyone.

Hello everyone,

I confirm regarding the size of the latest SSD. If it existed, it would only be available for professionals or at least, for a company. Its price would undoubtedly exceed ridiculous amounts.

This link lists the different families of SSDs... https://www.materiel.net/guide-achat/g7-les-ssd/5366/ with their respective prices.
