Webcam - no sound
SolvedHello,
I got a webcam
Bus 002 Device 007: ID 145f:0142 Trust WB-6250X Webcam
which is supposed to work directly.
The video is fine, but I can't get any sound. I tried cheese, camera, and guvcview, fiddled with all the options in pavucontrol and alsamixer, nothing to do (yes, yes, I checked that it's not muted)
The webcam does have a functional microphone (works on Win), but webcam test sites (whether on Win or Linux (in this case Linux Mint)) tell me "none" for the mic.
The strange thing: the LED lights up on Win but not on Linux.
I'm looking for additional leads.

Good evening,
This is your webcam... https://www.01net.com/tests/trust-wb-6250x-usb2-webcam-live-fiche-technique-4979.html
Try updating the driver... https://www.nodevice.fr/drivers/web-cam-webcam/trust/wb-6250x
Hello,
Here are three commands to run in a terminal; run each one to test, and then give me the three results:
Check the USB structure of the webcam:
lsusb -v -d 145f:0142
What I will look for:
If an audio interface exists (bInterfaceClass 1 Audio).
The exact type of audio device (UAC1, UAC2, or other).
If there is a “Vendor Specific” → indicating a proprietary protocol.
See if ALSA detects the mic as a recording device:
arecord -l
What I will look for:
Presence of a USB audio card linked to your webcam.
Its card number and device number (useful for testing with arecord).
Check the kernel logs on connection:
dmesg | tail -n 50
What I will look for:
If snd-usb-audio is loaded.
If there are errors like cannot get freq or unknown format.
If the kernel completely ignores the audio interface.
When you give me the 3 outputs, I will be able to tell you:
If your microphone is standard and just wrongly activated,
or if Trust uses an unsupported format under Linux.
I await your return, and I will give you a response. ????

Hello,
In light of all this, I've prepared a script for you to install everything you need, detect your USB webcam microphone, configure it as default in ALSA + PulseAudio, correct the frequency, and open the graphical interface so you can test it immediately.
Create the script file:
nano fix_mic_auto.sh
(paste the content below, then Ctrl+O, Enter, Ctrl+X)
#!/bin/bash echo "=== ???? Automatic USB microphone configuration ===" # 1. Install necessary tools echo "???? Installing ALSA & PulseAudio tools..." sudo apt update -y sudo apt install -y alsa-utils pulseaudio pavucontrol # 2. Automatic detection of USB microphone SRC=$(pactl list sources short | grep -i 'usb' | awk '{print $2}') if [ -z "$SRC" ]; then echo "❌ No USB microphone detected in PulseAudio." echo "Make sure it is plugged in and then restart the script." exit 1 fi echo "???? Microphone detected: $SRC" # 3. Quick recording test (3 sec) echo "???? Recording test..." arecord -D hw:1,0 -f S16_LE -c1 -r16000 /tmp/test.wav & PID=$! sleep 3 && kill $PID echo "???? Playing the test..." aplay /tmp/test.wav # 4. ALSA config (~/.asoundrc) echo "???? Configuring ALSA..." cat <<EOF > ~/.asoundrc pcm.webcam_mic { type hw card 1 device 0 } pcm.!default { type plug slave { pcm "webcam_mic" rate 16000 channels 1 format S16_LE } } EOF # 5. PulseAudio config (~/.config/pulse/default.pa) echo "???? Configuring PulseAudio..." mkdir -p ~/.config/pulse cp /etc/pulse/default.pa ~/.config/pulse/default.pa 2>/dev/null grep -q "set-default-source $SRC" ~/.config/pulse/default.pa || \ echo "set-default-source $SRC" >> ~/.config/pulse/default.pa # 6. Restart PulseAudio echo "♻️ Restarting PulseAudio..." pulseaudio -k pulseaudio --start # 7. Opening the graphical interface echo "✅ Configuration complete." echo "???? pavucontrol will open: 'Input' tab to check that your USB microphone is active." pavucontrol & Make it executable:
chmod +x fix_mic_auto.sh
Run it:
./fix_mic_auto.sh
This script:
Installs alsa-utils, pulseaudio, pavucontrol
Automatically detects your USB webcam microphone
Configures ALSA and PulseAudio
Restarts PulseAudio
Opens pavucontrol for direct testing
Thank you for the script, but it doesn't work any better.
I'm copying and pasting the script results:

I manually restarted pulseaudio (pidof pulseaudio + kill -9 pulseaudio) to be sure.
However, during playback, I hear noise.
I think it's a frequency problem, I don't really know what else to say! Especially if you hear a hissing sound. It's complex!
I have the idea that there is basically a story about recording/amplification levels. I have the same issue on another PC with a multi-effect pedal that serves as a sound card. There's sound being sent/read/recorded but we can't hear a thing.
Is there an equivalent of jmeters (which works with jack), but for the entire sound system?
Thank you
Hello,
Personally, I know Carla.
Carla is an audio plugin host that works with JACK, ALSA, and PulseAudio. It can integrate audio level measurement plugins (such as meters or spectrum analyzers) to monitor audio streams.
Advantages: Very flexible, as it supports a wide range of plugins (LADSPA, LV2, VST).
Can be used to monitor both JACK and non-JACK streams via bridges.
Suitable for professional environments.
Limitations: More complex configuration than jmeters.
Requires knowledge to integrate the right measurement plugins.
Installation: Available in Linux repositories or through sources like KXStudio.
Hello,
For me, you shouldn't look on the webcam software side, but rather on the pulseaudio side and everything that is "underneath" (alsa, webcam driver, etc.).
1) Check if your microphone is recognized by alsamixer. In a terminal, run:
alsamixer
then press F5 to see all the sliders and F6 to select different sound cards. Does the microphone appear there? If not, you may need to install a specific driver. Note that the status of the LED doesn’t necessarily impact functionality; it depends on how the driver is implemented: a device can work perfectly without the LED being properly managed.
2) If yes, check if your microphone is recognized by pulseaudio or pipewire (its replacement) with the command pactl (not pacmd, which is specific to pulseaudio):
pactl list sources
3) Finally, check in your sound applet or in pavucontrol that the volume of this source is high enough and is not muted. You can adjust this with the crossed-out speaker icon. Since this icon isn't very clear, to know if the microphone is active, just look at the padlock icon next to it: if this icon is clickable, the microphone is not muted.
pavucontrol &
Try to see if you are using the correct microphone.
4) If the problem persists, it would be interesting to see if you can get another microphone to work.
Good luck
Thank you for your response, but I am on Linux, so the process is different.
