Good evening everyone,
I recently installed Ubuntu and every time I log in, the light indicator of my webcam turns on.
It's nothing serious but it's quite disturbing to know that the eye in front of you is open and watching you?

How is it that the webcam turns on without any software requesting it?
Is it possible to turn it off?

Cam: Logitech

Thanks for your help guys, you do a great job helping little noobs like me every day.

    Hi,
and thanks for the thank you first.

As for your actual problem, is your webcam built-in or not? Check in System > Preferences > Startup Applications to see if there’s an application that starts up related to your webcam.

      Hello,

I am encountering exactly the same problem: my webcam turns on by itself at startup of Ubuntu.
I also have a built-in webcam. I went to System > Preferences > Startup Applications but I don't see what it could be. I came across "Visual Aid". Could it be that I need to uncheck this? Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hello,

Ubuntu uses the uvcvideo module, I believe, to manage Logitech webcams (to be verified with
    lsmod | grep uvcvideo
    )
To unload the module, a quick
    sudo rmmod uvcvideo

    should turn off the webcam.
To reload it in the kernel:
    sudo modprobe uvcvideo

It's up to you to create a bash script if you want to run it automatically at startup and turn off the module at boot.

    Best regards

    Hello,

    Sorry for my late response.

I apologize but I think I unfortunately expressed myself poorly in my previous post. In reality, my webcam turns on by itself when Ubuntu wakes up from sleep. To be clearer, when I reopen the lid of my laptop to use Ubuntu again, my webcam turns on.

However, I tried to fix the problem using the command 'sudo rmmod uvcvideo' that you recommended, but unfortunately without success. :-(

Do you have any other advice to offer me? Thank you in advance for your valuable help.

Could you give me the result of:
      lsmod
      and
      lsusb

      Best regards

    Hello,

I'm very sorry for my late reply, but unfortunately I had a dual boot with Seven and therefore couldn't access Ubuntu.
