How to transition from office 2016 to microsoft 365

Hello,
I am thinking of purchasing the Microsoft 365 version to replace my Office 2016 package. Do I need to uninstall Office 2016 or will the installation of 365 overwrite the old files? How can I keep my Outlook mailbox and its history?
Thank you in advance
Have a great day

Hello,
The first question to ask is whether it's worth migrating from 2016 to 365.
2016 is sufficient for a very large number of people; if for some reason new features are needed, 365 is subscription-based while 2021 licenses can be found for a symbolic euro.
That being said, unless using an Exchange server, simply exporting the pst file from Outlook 2016 is enough if using POP, not at all if using IMAP since files are synced online; in the latter case, one should be able to make a copy of the local ost file, but I don't believe we can do an export-import of it.

Some keep two versions of Office concurrently; without going into details, this is not possible in all cases and can lead to unexpected results, especially since it's not really clear what the benefit of keeping both would be.
One then needs to uninstall Office 2016, which like all Office versions can be sticky, using the Office uninstallation assistant after exporting the pst and before installing the new version.

Thank you for your quick response, and you are right, if there are no significant changes, Office 2016 is sufficient for me. I was worried that there would be a usage blockage due to Microsoft because, to sell their new product, they do a lot of advertising, and that made me anxious.
Have a nice day.
Best regards :-)
I used Office 2007 until 2 or 3 years ago on Windows 10 without any problems for what I use it for (but it's out of the question for Outlook which has new authentication procedures).
I don't know what spur of the moment made me migrate not to 2016 but to 2019 which is also not up to date but which I do not intend to change.
There will be no more security updates for 2016 and 2019 in approximately a year but well, they are not, notably for me, "communicative" versions.
Hello everyone.
First of all, thanks to Brucine, whose explanations are clear. That being said, if we have to reinstall the MS suite, we are left with either 365 or 2024 (here, at a very low cost).
Since it’s a new install, there’s no need to uninstall previous versions of MS.
BUT, where it gets stuck (damn it!!!) is Outlook 2024 with a FREE or Gmail account.
At this point, as the Bavarians say, "démerdenSieZich" = figure it out yourselves. Due to a flawed configuration from MS (since 2016 I think), the address ***@*** cannot be "read" correctly by the Outlook account creation routine. On the free side, there’s hardly any sound, no image.
This is where I am and tired....
Hello,
I am using Microsoft 365. I have 3 Free accounts and two Gmail accounts. I haven't had any issues with the Gmail accounts. The Free accounts are a bit more challenging to set up (you have to manually code the ports for the POP and SMTP servers), but it's not the end of the world either.
